In the past I would have agreed that FBI agents are consummate professionals. They brought expertise and resources to major investigations like the Boston Marathon bombing. Not so any more. The agency has been hollowed out over the past year
in my opinion and as widely reported in MSM. Two cites among the widespread coverage from major media outlets:
Deepening its purge, the bureau forced out Steven Jensen, whose ascent had angered Trump supporters, and Brian Driscoll, the acting director in the early chaotic days of the administration.

Possible widespread firings of FBI agents are raising concerns about the agency’s ability to keep the public safe and to be politically independent.

The FBI still brings resources and manpower. But that's not enough. The FBI supports local law enforcement by developing leads from raw information, organizing the investigation efficiently and effectively. It no longer brings the level of expertise and professionalism it was famous for.
CBS News has learned hundreds of FBI agents and staff have been fired or are leaving due to the government's worker buyout program. It all represents a fork in the road for the bureau. Scott MacFarlane has more.

If BE's anonymous source is accurate, it came from or is about the federal side, in my opinion based on recent high-profile crimes. In the assassination of Charlie Kirk and the mass shooting at Brown University, premature leaks from federal investigators mischaracterized the status of the investigation, leading to public statements by federal officeholders and reporting by the media that the culprit was in custody. The misinformation had to be walked back shortly after when the individual being questioned was released without charges. With Brown, federal authorities gave the all-clear twice while the shooter was at large.
