NC - Officer, several others dead at Raleigh active shooting scene, 13 Oct 2022 *suspect is a minor*

MESSAGE FROM WCPSS BOARD CHAIR LINDSAY MAHAFFEY AND SUPERINTENDENT CATTY MOORE

Wake County Public School System Families and Staff,

On Thursday evening, Oct. 13, our community endured a terrible tragedy.

Five lives were taken in a senseless act of violence in northeastern Raleigh near the Neuse River Greenway, including one of our own students. Two others were injured. The shooter was taken into custody with life-threatening injuries.

Like you, we are shocked, saddened and broken-hearted. Our hearts go out to the victims’ loved ones, and our community continues to seek answers around this tragedy and solutions to prevent such unspeakable events in the future.

As we all work to make sense of this, our utmost concern as always is how our students, families and staff are doing. That is why we want to provide you with information and resources that can help you talk to students, along with some resources for our staff.

Our Student Support Services teams are available at our schools to talk to your child and offer as much support as possible. Please do not hesitate to reach out to those who can help.

Following are some resources and suggestions for families and staff:

Tips for supporting students in times of trauma:
  • Parents, caregivers and adults need to first deal with and assess their own responses to crisis and stress.
  • Try and keep routines as normal as possible.
  • Young people gain security from the predictability of routine, including attending school.
  • Reassure children that adults care for them and are focused on keeping them safe.
  • Create time to listen and be available to talk.
  • Be honest with young people and share with them as much information as they are developmentally able to handle.
Resources
This is a time for all of us to come together and support each other. We will get through this time, and we will be a stronger community as a result. Please continue to seek help where needed, and take care of yourselves and each other.

Sincerely,
Lindsay Mahaffey, Board Chair
Catty Q. Moore, Superintendent

Atentamente,
Lindsay Mahaffey, Board Chair
Catty Q. Moore, Superintendent

I don’t see anyone talking about this, but apart from the brother and the police, all of the victims are middle-aged women and I don’t think this is a coincidence.

JMO but I think we will find that like most of these shootings, the motive is tied to some deeply held misogyny.

List of victims

  • Nicole Connors, 52
  • Susan Karnatz, 49
  • Mary Marshall, 35
  • Gabriel Torres, 29
  • James Thompson, 16
These two others were injured and remain at WakeMed:

  • Marcille Gardner, 59
  • The 15-year-old shooting suspect
Two of the victims were police officers.

Did the shooter live in one of the townhomes on Osprey Cove where the shooting started?
I heard LE say “I’ve got the 16-year-old and need medical. Repeat, 16-year-old down” on the scanner yesterday. (Or something very similar.) I wondered at the time how the officer knew the age of the person down. It makes sense now that I know the 16-year-old was the brother of the shooter. I’m guessing that LE knew the suspect’s name at that point and were specifically at his residence to account for known family members.

I also heard them say something about booby traps and a bomb truck at one point. I don’t know if they were saying they’d discovered traps at his residence or if someone had reported a rumor or the possibility that he set traps or if it was something else entirely. (There were several different agencies—both LE and fire/rescue—using the same channel, so it wasn’t always clear who was where and what was what.)

That's possible, but it's also likely that he simply shot the first people he saw, and they happened to be women.

I foresee a LOT more of this now. The Stoneman Douglass verdict has kids thinking they are invincible now. He admitted what he did, planned it out, and STILL got life. Dozens of schools in FL after that verdict had threats of shooters within hours. It was a well planned out 'attack' of Florida High schools and wasted a TON of Emergency response teams. Nothing was found, at least at our school... but kids are brazen now. Even more so. This has to stop. I've read from teens. 'Well, he'll have food, tv, sports, internet, etc.... and never have to pay for any of it... " WOW, just wow.

I heard the same on the scanner. And something about the wires from the electrical box being pulled out. That was after someone was sent to that house to look for a picture. "Maybe on a wall". The brother was found in a bathroom per the scanner. I am wondering if someone who called in to the police recognized him as he was shooting in the street. Or at least knew what house he lived in.

Schools have been having threats of shooters every day, even before this verdict.

I am local to this, living in the greater RDU area, and have just come here, as we have been saturated with local coverage since this first began yesterday evening. <modsnip> Does anyone know if type of weapon has been confirmed?

Prayers to all the families impacted by yet another senseless act of violence, and to the entire community.
I just jumped on here for update. Has weapon been identified?

Agree. Sounds like he snapped, shot the brother, then went on a rampage. Probably the majority of people on the Greenway at that time happened to be middle-aged women. Definitely not ruling out misogyny, but I think opportunity was more at play. But how terrifying.

“Patterson said Austin Thompson was in critical condition at WakeMed. Sources tell WRAL News that Austin Thompson has multiple injuries, including a gunshot wound to the head.“

I wonder if the GSW to the head was self-inflicted, or if it came from law enforcement.

Hard to say, but I would think perhaps self-inflicted. I think most firearms trainers teach to shoot at an assailant's center mass. JMO

In the words of firearms trainer Ron Avery, himself a championship shooter, head of the Practical Shooting Academy and a member of the Force Science Technical Advisory Board, shooting for an assailant’s center mass is usually considered the most effective first option because the upper torso combines a concentration of vital areas and major blood vessels within the body’s largest target. “When the risk of failure is death, an officer needs the highest percentage chance of success he can get,” Everett notes.

Will be curious to see if the shooter‘s digital forensic records show any awareness of Parkland. Am going to guess that they will not, but uncommon and revealing if in fact they do.

For the sake of the hearts and minds and PTSD-risks of all involved law enforcement, I very much hope this was not a bullet from an officer. Even if it was the right and prudent move given the situation, still an extraordinarily emotional load to have to live with.

If this weapon was legally acquired by his parents and then unsecured in the home, I challenge us all to have the fundamental discussion about that. We are a country in mental-health crisis particularly post-COVID. Such a difficult but important topic. Will be very interested in what eventually factually comes to light regarding the origin of this gun.

the off duty police man he shot was not in uniform so I suspect that he just shot whomever he saw

One of the victims killed was an off-duty Raleigh police officer, Gabriel Torres, 29, who was on his way to work, authorities said.

….

With him on his way to work I assumed he was in his cruiser &
Uniform.
Seeing that is for Greensboro. In Md they drive cruiser home.

I read somewhere that he was not dressed for work and in his own personal car.
