How America Became Afraid of the Other

"The United States has always had a tricky relationship with immigrants and refugees, even if part of the American mythology is that we are a land of newcomers. In this mythology, they—migrants—are a part of us. At the same time, the United States has also gone through periodic spasms of intense anti-immigrant feeling.

So it is now, with the Trump Administration weaponizing the fear of the other and promoting a moral panic about strangers coming to our shores. When these people, including those who are also Americans, become seen as a threat to the nation, they are no longer a part of us. Instead, they become the other to our collective self as a country.

.........................

As the line between arresting and kidnapping, official police and secret police, is blurred, we—citizen or noncitizen—are meant to be intimidated. We are meant to submit to power, to any masked person saying they are the law, just as the Venezuelans dispatched to El Salvador are meant to crouch before menacing, masked, armored guards."

"Mahdawi, a student organizer at Columbia University and a lawful U.S. resident for a decade, was arrested by federal agents in Colchester during an interview as part of his U.S. citizenship naturalization process.

At that meeting, Mahdawi affirmed his commitment to “defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign, and domestic,” according to court filings submitted by his attorneys.

But afterward, an immigration official told Mahdawi he needed to “‘check’ on some information,” and “ICE agents, masked and visibly armed, entered the interview room and shackled” Mahdawi, according to the filing.

The federal officers ushered Mahdawi into a vehicle and attempted to get him on a plane en route to Louisiana, his lawyers have said. But Mahdawi’s attorneys quickly filed a lawsuit, and a judge issued a temporary order to keep him in Vermont. He was later detained at Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans, where he continues to be held."

'Judge orders return to Vermont'

"After hearing arguments from both sides, Judge William Sessions ruled last week that Öztürk must be returned to Vermont no later than May 1. There, she will be able to contest that the government violated her constitutional rights and that her detainment was illegal.

The government appealed Sessions’ first ruling, arguing that Öztürk should be kept in Louisiana. Sessions therefore had to issue a new ruling Thursday.

Öztürk’s transfer to Vermont will have no impact on the government’s separate removal proceedings against her in immigration court. An immigration judge denied her bond recently, arguing that she is both a flight risk and a danger to her community. Öztürk will have the opportunity to seek her release on bail in federal court in Vermont. '

"U.S. District Judge William K. Sessions III of Vermont has performed a public service as well as his judicial duty by clarifying the nature of the Trump administration’s lawless campaign of abduction, detention and deportation of international students studying at American universities.

“Lawless” is our characterization, not the judge’s. But Sessions’ carefully measured 74-page ruling in the case of Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish national who is a doctoral candidate in child study and human development at Tufts University, can be read to support that conclusion. Ozturk was abducted near her apartment in Somerville, Mass., on March 25 by masked federal agents in plainclothes who seized her cell phone and handcuffed her before spiriting her off via Vermont to a detention facility in Louisiana. There she is reportedly being held in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions without access to her asthma medication or occasion for religious observances. Earlier this month, Sessions ordered U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to return Ozturk to Vermont by May 1 while her challenge to her detention is pending in his court. The government has filed notice that it intends to appeal his decision.

There are several strands to untangle here. One is the arcane but important matter of jurisdiction. We hesitate to rush in where laymen should fear to tread, but it seems fair to say that Sessions rejected the government’s blanket assertion that the federal judiciary has no oversight role in immigration cases. We believe that any other conclusion would constitute a blank check for government abuse of human rights."

An Irish woman who has been living legally in the United States for decades has been taken into detention by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a trip to Ireland to visit her sick father.

Cliona Ward (54), who went to the US in her early teens and is the sole carer for a son with special needs, is in an ICE facility in Tacoma, Washington state, according to the enforcement agency’s website.

Her sister, Orla Holladay, who also lives in the US, said Ward travelled back to Ireland recently with their stepmother to visit their father, who has dementia.

On her return to the US, Ward, who has been living in Santa Cruz, California, for more than 30 years, was questioned about drug possession convictions from more than a decade ago that have reportedly been “expunged” under state but not under federal law.

A holder of a valid green card, Ward was held when she landed at San Francisco International Airport as queries were raised about the past convictions.

She was then released but returned to the airport last Monday to show documentation to officials from US Customs and Border Protection recording how the convictions had been expunged.

However, she was taken into custody, moved to a detention facility outside Seattle, Washington, and, according to reports, is now due before the courts until May 7th next.

I'm glad they've all been arrested & removed. This is EXACTLY what many people voted for.

Will it be heads on spikes next to warn the masses? Such macabre theatre.
You got to ask yourself, is Donald well? I mean psychiatrically?
This is abnormal behaviour.
He was so vociferous about Biden and him not being able to do the job due to age etc, in all seriousness Donald Trump's cognitive ability needs to be questioned, the same way Joe Biden's was.
He is making some very unwise choices.

Moo, imo, jmo

IMO:
Real hard to believe any accusations coming out of this administration's mouth about a citizen or non-citizen.

"The posters describe the arrestees as "illegal aliens." Their names and precise legal statuses aren't included"

I’m glad as well, hope all the criminals are caught and deported.

You are correct, anyone entering the country is eligible to apply for asylum. The immigrants being deported, have lived in our country for months or years and never applied for asylum. They wait till the deportation order is issued and want to backtrack in the process.

I have an acquaintance, from Russia, who was awarded asylum. He said the first thing he did when he sent foot on US soil was to apply for asylum.

Many illegal immigrants enter the country, find a job, work, build a life, have children. They never think about applying for asylum, until ice knocks on the door.

There are many pathways to legal citizenship. I know many that are now proud legal US citizens.

Yes, entering the country illegally is a civil offense. Civil or criminal, they have still broken US law and that's why they are deported.

Moo...
There are a few countries in the world that get a free pass when it comes to asylum seekers. Cuba and USSR, for one.

Accusations are just that, they are only alleged. Has there been any actual evidence of any of them having committed a crime? due process requires that they be charged, found guilty and sentenced for the crime.

Meanwhile your POTUS was found guilty of crimes…

Do you have any data to back this up?

This person came to our country (1992) and followed our requirements. He was at great risk when he applied for asylum. It could have been immediately been deported. He worked his way through college to obtain his doctorate, and never received one penny of government assistance. He's never so much as had a parking ticket. He values US citizenship.

Can't say the same for some others that entered the country illegally, fail to apply for citizenship, failed to seek asylum, and disregard our laws. President Obama opened an opportunity through DACA, so many failed to even apply or take advantage of the great opportunity.

I don't think I've ever met another, more grateful than this gentleman. I will always value his friendship and the wise words he frequently shared.

In the United States, with hard work anyone can achieve success. In Russia it's hard work just to survive day to day.

Huh, this is interesting:

But federal data shows there has not been a significant jump in immigrants deported since Trump took office. Mass deportations have not occurred. The numbers show removals are lagging behind levels during the Biden administration.”

“We're down border crossings 96 percent, so we don't have millions of people coming across the border," Homan told reporters at the White House. "Just to compare our removal numbers to (Biden's) is just ridiculous."

Homan also told the New York Times, "We need to increase the arrests ... They're not high enough."”

What..is this a competition?? Must beat Biden’s number? 🫤

Hopefully, they can double the numbers in the next 100 days. It appears, in my area, Virginia detainments and arrest have picked up speed in the last 30 days.

From the office of Governor Youngkin
130 Gang Affiliates

RICHMOND, VA – The Virginia Homeland Security Task Force (VHSTF), a federal-state partnership established by the U.S. Department of Justice to combat transnational organized crime, gang violence and immigration violations across Virginia passed 500 arrests this week, Governor Glenn Youngkin announced Monday.

Of those 521 total arrests made since the operation started on February 25, 132 individuals are affiliated with gangs such as MS-13, Tren de Aragua, other transnational organized crime (TOC) organizations and criminal gangs.

Thanks to the brave men and women of our federal and state law enforcement, more than 500 criminal illegal immigrants, including more than 130 gang-members, are off of Virginia’s streets and facing justice for their crimes,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “All Virginians should be proud that our State Troopers and Corrections Officers are a part of this incredible team of over 200 law enforcement officers. I am grateful for the leadership of President Trump, Attorney General Bondi, Secretary Noem, Director Patel, and Acting Director Lyons. What’s happening in Virginia is a model that should be replicated all across the country.”

“This is the product of unprecedented collaboration between state and federal law enforcement entities working to protect Virginia’s communities,” said United States Attorney General Pam Bondi. “Governor Youngkin and Attorney General Miyares have been incredible partners with the Department of Justice, and we will collaborate with every state in effectuating President Trump’s Make America Safe agenda.”

The Virginia Homeland Security Task Force is a model for every state in the country on effective collaboration between federal law enforcement agencies and state and local partners working every day to make America safer,” said FBI Director Kash Patel. “The FBI is proud to work with Attorney General Bondi, Governor Youngkin, and Virginia AG Miyares in this effort. Our early numbers so far have been a tremendous success, but we are just beginning.”

I don't think it's about increasing Biden's numbers. I know we only have less than 4 years to remove those in the country illegally, and secure our borders.

I do think arrest/detainments will double or triple in the coming months. The partnerships with Homeland Security and States and localities won't reap many deportations.

I'd like to point out, Biden's deportations were never or rarely reported by the media. It's not the Trump administration comparing to Biden, it's mainstream media.
