"The grieving family of an Idaho murder victim
is trying to return more than $85,000 of trial travel donations
after killer Bryan Kohberger entered a plea deal.

Kaylee Goncalves' father
wants to give back every penny raised for his family -
saying he would never cheat generous donors
as Latah County prosecutors cheated his family out of a trial.

The fundraiser,
started in September 2024,
was created for the Goncalves family to be able to attend Kohberger's trial."

How many others watched the one-hour show on this case on CNN last night?

An hour of course means a fairly compressed overview of the case, but here are my takeaways:
1. CNN did a good job covering the initial investigation, including the awkward early moment of the Moscow PD while showing how pro-active the PD was to call in so much help from the FBI and how they got to a suspect but couldn't tell the public because they were gathering evidence.
2. My heart broke for Ben Mogen, who was the parent who got the most time. He seems heartbroken but so mature and centered. They did an interview with him.
3. CNN picked some moments from SG and his wife, primarily focused on their grief while acknowledging his oppositional stance to LE.

I would encourage everyone, most especially all the female everyones, to read The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker.

It talks about the importance of listening to those warning bells going off inside your head rather than ignoring them.

It reminds me of another case a lot of us here are following, the Morphew case.
Suzanne herself said she didn't feel safe alone with Barry.
Moral of the story: If you ever hear yourself saying you don't feel safe around (person X), you need to listen to yourself. Get away from them. Immediately.

KR strikes me as being someone with extensive head knowledge but not-so-hot assessment skills.
A lot of academics have the knowledge to be experts in a specific field of study, but they lack the requisite skills and abilities to actually perform well in the field vs. in the classroom.

Based on her comments about BK, I'm dubious about KR's ability to accurately read a room.

She's no Ann Rule.

JMO.
FWIW I am highly familiar with that book! As well as The Sociopath Next Door.

Maybe KR decided BK was a "non threat" to her, personally? I also doubt she would go into the details on a national broadcast or disclose her true personal thoughts and feelings. JMHO.

I'm no Patterson fan but I want to read this book.
I doubt Patterson did much of the actual writing.

I preordered the book and am looking forward to watching the accompanying four-part Amazon Prime docu-series.

I wonder if the producers of the show did any quick edits, or if Patterson and Ward have appended an afterward to the book (perhaps available online).

Can you imagine how many “entertainment” plans were completely scuttled by BK’s last minute plea deal?
RBBM

Likely got an A+ in course #3, without having to devote much time to actual studying - personal experience was plenty. 🤭

MOO
I bet Ramsland wishes she had recorded his classroom comments, ‘cause you know he made plenty.

She did say in her NewsNation interview that she has lots of material on him. I wonder if she kept his papers? If he took the course in his last undergrad semester (May 2022, IIRC), he would have submitted it online, so it should be available still.

I'm curious what type of killer he will be termed. A spree killer? Can't be serial because there's a resting time between serial murders, not a great number at once. Maybe an opportunistic killer?
I would consider him a mass murderer, and would-be-serial murderer, whose resting time is going to be whatever time he has left in this life. JMO

Thanks for this. I didn't watch it, but it resonates hugely... the families of the victims' and their suffering, heart breaking for all!!

I should have been clearer in my post, but I was trying to address 2 separate points at once.
The threat/safety issue was separate from the KR discussion regarding her take on BK.

This is nothing more than personal opinion, but I'm really not a fan of anyone who comes out on the heels of a tragedy and in any way gives even the slightest appearance of trying to turn it into a self-promotional opportunity, e.g., media interviews, writing a book, etc.

Reminds me of that infamous quote by Rahm Emanuel, "You never want to let a good crisis go to waste." That kind of attitude genuinely makes me sick.

If KR wants to interview BK in prison, that's fine. Do it quietly, without fanfare or media promotion.
If KR wants to write a book, that's also fine. Give a huge chunk of the proceeds to charities of the victims' choosing.

I'll stick to my Ann Rule collection. Again, just my own personal thoughts and preferences.

I work for a college in an office that is heavily focused on FERPA (student privacy rights). Based on my experience, I'm suspicious on how freely she's discussing his time as a student. It makes me seriously think she obtained a signed consent form to release his information and discuss his information.
Responding to my own post...I'm just now watching the interview with his professor (link below) and they actually discuss the confines of FERPA. I'm less inclined to think she received a sign off from BK. Every college is different in how strict they interpret the law. I err on the side of caution and refuse to acknowledge if a person is even a student at our school unless there's a very good reason to do so.

Yeah, it's not unexpected, IMO, thank you for this update.

I don't anticipate anything the producers of the show, or Ramsland, have to say that hasn't been said before, even with the gag order and BK's guilty plea, maybe some additional backstory or personal thoughts.

Just maybe their "insider" take on the case, they feel is valuable.

I feel most sorry for the victims' families, and them having an opportunity to heal after Bk's guilty plea.

At the same time, acknowledging the people and industries surrounding the case may feel shortchanged.

What's a poor boy/girl to do, except weigh in at this point?

I think she would need both permission from BK and her university's institutional review board to use any material BK completed as an undergrad or grad. I wouldn't even consider it for any number of reasons, in particular to protect my small university from publicity of the wrong kind.

That grudge, frankly will eat him alive over time. I sincerely hope he wakes up for his wife and kids' sake.

.....Aaaaaaand he just couldn't help himself.

This statement by SG would have been so much more admirable had it not included (yet another) passive-aggressive jab at the prosecution team.

Literally everything he says morphs into an attack on the people who are actually locking his daughter's killer away in a cell for the rest of his life.

He appears to have dug himself in to this mindset of LE being the enemy, and he's either unwilling or unable to climb out of it right now.

It's so unfortunate.

Still no filing posted on the Idaho Cases of Interest page.

I thought Bill Thompson made a good argument during the plea hearing about keeping the order in place until after the sentencing hearing:

During her NewsNation interview with Brian Entin the day after the plea deal was announced, Dr. Ramsland said she would like to study BK if he is willing to let her. The video of the interview is linked on the following page (start at 9:33 to hear her speak about her desire to work with BK in the future):

Bryan Kohberger’s former professor wonders if serial killer classes inspired him

This July 2 New York Post article recaps Dr. Ramsland’s NewsNation interview:

BBM

as does this Daily Mail article from the same day:

BBM
Yes, I remember that, @PunishThenForgive.

Thanks for bringing that forward.

I haven't read up on all to do with Dr. Ramsland, but I think I picked up on her expressing some regret that she wasn't "able" to see BK for what he was back when she knew him, and would like to do so now, "in hindsight".

It's gotta be tearing her up right now, her former student admitting to these atrocities, and her being "none the wiser", and wanting to seek some sort of recompense.

So many victims

Certainly! I just meant Ramsland could reread his work and discuss it with him, if he agrees to meet with her.

Regardless of its quality, I think there will unfortunately be a market for his written work if BK agrees to publish any of it. Think of all the “murderabilia” out there for other crazed killers.

IMO

I think Judge Hippler might be inclined to lift that gag order now that the plea has been entered and accepted.

I'm not sure Thompson's argument for keeping things sealed until after sentencing is going to hold a lot of water when balanced against the public records laws.

The fact that AT indicated the defense had no problem with keeping them sealed until after sentencing may make the judge more inclined to leave them sealed until after BK's sentencing hearing, though.

My tentative read based on the short discussion they had at the plea hearing was that Thompson definitely wants them kept sealed, AT doesn't care, and the judge himself doesn't see why it's necessary to have them sealed any more.

JMO.
