Reporter Kayna Whitworth mentions in her podcast DM attending the plea deal hearing. I have not heard this before.

Also of interest, she mentions BKs father turning his head and his face turning red as charges were read and he pled guilty.
DM?

@Chloegirl, I’m sorry, not clicking.

Okay if you are not remembering DM is Dylan 1 of 2 surviving roommates, so there you go. I thought this was a huge deal that she attended the plea deal hearing, myself!

Or if you are saying that the link does not work, I tried it and it worked and played and there is text too to read instead (Apple podcast which I am not an apple person but it worked for me just now).

FWIW I am highly familiar with that book! As well as The Sociopath Next Door.

Maybe KR decided BK was a "non threat" to her, personally? I also doubt she would go into the details on a national broadcast or disclose her true personal thoughts and feelings. JMHO.
Love The Sociopath Next Door. Fantastic book.

I know he’s written numerous novels but why does Patterson have a co-author?
He is a business now. He creates outlines, and then farms them out to writers who basically write the books, he reviews and makes edits, and releases, credited as James Patterson WITH yada yada. He puts out about 12 books a year. I stopped reading his books years ago, when he stopped writing them. JMO

This is how Patterson works. He has a whole stable of co-authors. One source said 30, including people like Bill Clinton. Here's a link to an article about his process with co-authors:

Me, too! I'm there also with the Robert Parker "Spenser" and "Sunny Randell" novels being written by other people.

This book should be required reading, especially for women and young people who are typical targets for predators. He goes over the key signs that someone isn't safe for you: a stranger who won't respect you saying "no," "forced teaming," charm, making promises to get your guard down (I promise I won't stay...). I've read this and the follow-up book for parents and they've made me much more assertive in the public space.

I'm struck by how many victims here who are killed by people in their lives knew they were in danger.

I've heard of this book so many times yet have never read it. I'm going to read it.

As I was looking at a book sample, this quote (esp. in re: to the discussion here re: BK getting multiple life sentences without parole vs. the death penalty) in the book stood out to me:

From the book sample available here:

Why do you think she'd want to have anything to do with him?
IMO: She wants to publish a book to keep relevant. A talking head on Court TV said that since Bryan’s not going on death row, he will be able to correspond and have visits from, his family, authors, podcasters, criminologists etc. Bryan will remain in the news until the next big case.

It just boggles my mind that ONE person
could wreak all this havoc :(

- Four young beautiful people dead
- Families in despair
- Town affected by infamy
- Students experiencing trauma
- Huge amount of money spent on neverending dragging Court sittings.

And yet,
during Plea in Court
the perpetrator seemed unperturbed, stoic, sporting fancy hairdo,
with seemingly no remorse.

It even seemed to me watching the photos
that I detected a hint of a smile on his face???

Words fail me :(

Gosh, you're right, I see a smile. Cover his eyes! His mouth is smiling! Ugh. MOO!

Cool! For me, it only works if I open the video in YouTube.

His "scrawling signature" perhaps is meant to fall in line with his inability to tie shoelaces, and such bs, and it might raise a few eyebrows if he had stabbed the victims with a pen, but...not with a KaBar knife. It is a very forgiving weapon. JMO

Might be one of those cultural differences that The Daily Mail is trying to ignore (since they do have US based correspondents, they can't claim complete ignorance:

Cursive is no longer a mandatory part of US grade school student's curriculum. Many schools dropped it entirely in 2011 when a lot of states adopted Common Core standards, and schools continued to drop or reduce the amount of cursive instruction in grade school.

My 23 got about two months of it when he was in 3rd grade. When it came time for his learner's permit, I had to reteach him how to at least sign his name. Now if he needs to sign his name, he refers back to how he signed it on his state ID (which he based off a sticky note where I wrote his name in cursive). He can not read cursive for the most part.

My 18 yo got about 2 weeks of cursive in 3rd grade at the same school with the same teacher. I had to provide him with a sticky note where I wrote his name in cursive for him to model off of when he got his learner's permit.

I don't know how they can check signatures on ballots, licenses, etc reliably for the generations who are younger than 35ish....because they really made a practice to write in cursive.

I haven't read American Lightening but I'd heard uncomplimentary remarks about Blum's book. ( Inaccuracies)

In that interview Ramsland justifies it by saying that it helps criminologists evaluate a killer's development - she's hardly going to say ' well, I need a new subject, there's also money to be made & I have special access.'
Then Chris McDonough pops up on that show reminding everybody that 'at this stage, BK will just lie anyway.'

Obviously I don't object to the prospect of FBI's behavioral experts/LE & their psychs studying him if it helps them in future crime-fighting & we're certainly seeing an increase in these highly destructive young, male killers but those experts probably don't have agents & publishers.

Final thoughts- why does Ramsland keep smiling in the interview? Nerves or is it the spotlight? Also, why did she contact BK's family/parents?
I’ve always questioned her contacting his parents, especially now that I read in posts here that most of his classes with her were on Zoom. OMO but I feel like there was a hidden agenda.

I attended a small Southern college where it was not unusual to be invited to socialize in a professor’s home and to perhaps even have their spouses know us by name. I can’t imagine one of my professors, calling my parents to offer moral support (allegedly) if I had been arrested for murder.

It seems even less appropriate that KR called the parents considering BK was well over 21 and a graduate student — fully into adulthood. This phone call sort of fits into the “coddling” vibe someone used up thread to describe dynamics in relationships BK had with a few of the adults in his family. Not judging. MOO.

KR is a bit strange herself, she doesn’t interview well. She could be intentionally projecting herself as mysterious in an effort to create interest for a book.

I agree with that assessment. Although anybody who studies serial killers has to be a little bit "interesting". JMOO

Not to take away from the severity of this specific crime however...

KR has written about all kinds of monsters. Ted Bundy was convicted of killing 30 people. BK is not on the same level as TB or BTK. FWIW don't get me wrong he's still subhuman but not as diabolical, thankfully! (jmho)
I think he likely wants to be referred to as a member of this group, as BCK, now that we have seen the signature.

Victim Impact Statements. Kaylee's Fam?

From ID. criminal code 19-5306. Rights of victim
"(3) The provisions of this section shall apply equally to the immediate families of homicide victims... The court may designate a representative from the immediate family to exercise these rights on behalf of a deceased... victim." sbm bbm

Do we know if Judge H. designated a representative of Kaylee's family?
If so, I've missed it.
If the court did designate a rep, could the order be in one of the many sealed documents?

From link, seems atty Shanon Gray was not aware or maybe just glossed over that point.
imo

"(1) Each victim of a criminal ... offense shall be:
"(e) Heard, upon request, at all criminal justice proceedings considering a plea of guilty, sentencing,... unless manifest injustice would result;"

@PunishThenForgive TYVM for posting link to Court TV’s Vinnie Politan w. Goncalves attorney Shanon Gray about the (possible) victim impact statements from Kaylee's fam. And for timestamps 7:56 to 8:56 relevant to VicImpStmts.
