More from the scene

By Melissa Brown

The ABC's Kimberley Price says an armoured police vehicle is among the convoy of emergency service cars that have travelled to the Mount Buffalo Road property.

She says there are also paramedics, at least four unmarked police cars and the police helicopter is circling.

This is now as close as the media can get to the property:

Additional resources and text messages to ramp up

By Mikaela Ortolan

Superintendent Brett Kahan has thanked locals for providing insight into the search area, which is foreign to many of the officers taking part in the manhunt.

"The assistance from the public and the advice we're getting about that terrain ... has been remarkable," he says.
"We're continuing a significant land and air search in and around that area of activity.
"There's a significant police presence, not only in the search for Dezi [Freeman] which will continue, but also to provide that reassurance to the community and also the communities around Porepunkah, which is really important to us."
He says Victoria Police is already looking at additional assistance including from the Australian Federal Police and its NSW colleagues.

Anyone in the area can expect to receive more frequent messages from police with updates and advice. They'll be expanding the radius for who receives those messages as well.

"We're sending messaging to those local community members. We're giving advice and we're going to make that advice more timely today," Superintendent Kahan say.

Police issue travel advice for region

By Mikaela Ortolan

Victoria Police has issued an alert for travellers heading to Bright, Falls Creek or Mount Hotham telling them to avoid Porepunkah and instead travel via Running Creek and Mount Beauty.

Mount Buffalo National Park remains closed until further notice.

Parks Victoria say anyone with plans to visit the national park should find an alternative.

Mount Buffalo is about 350 kilometres north-east of Melbourne in the Alpine region.

It's quite a popular destination particularly during winter, with snow often falling in the area.

The alleged shooting took place at a property near the foot of Mount Buffalo.

I don't think he's gone bush.

I feel like there would be a lot of people who would protect or at least shelter him.

A surprisingly large percentage of people have similar view points to him. Especially in country areas. If you think they are fringe, wake up - they're really not.

If you don't believe me on that, look at the Facebook comment section on any major news outlet's posts regarding Covid vaccines.

You could point out the fact that he allegedly killed two police officers, and was being charged with sex offences against a child, but conspiracy mindsets don't stop at vaccines. To them he could be someone targeted by the system to silence dissent.

MOO

If police had done a proper risk assessment for this case then the least they could do was to have the getaways into the bush covered.
Also they should have expected the welcome they got by noticing the CCTV cameras guarding the entrance.
I stand by the fact that conciliation with this madman was a better option than arriving in a swarm that would only aggravate the situation and incite Freeman into responding.
Now they have at least 100 people, maybe 200, involved to try and catch him before he kills someone else.
Anyway that that's my opinion and it will probably be my last post.
Are you suggesting that you are more knowledgeable and experienced than our police do?

How exactly would conciliation with him work?

You are blaming the police for freeman’s choices, and that is abhorrent.

I do wonder if someone might be assisting him ...........

Respectfully, I doubt there would be a lot of people who would protect or shelter him.

Its one thing to have 'alternative' beliefs, and i agree there are many that fit into that category, but helping/protecting/providing shelter for an alleged cop killer is on a whole different scale.

Besides, the police would be all over that anyway. Right now, they would have very close eyes on all of his known contacts, neighbours etc...

Police urge Dezi Freeman to ‘ring triple zero’ and surrender as they warn anyone harbouring him will be prosecuted

Police tell suspect to ring triple zero as they will ‘support a surrender plan’

Brett Kahan goes on to directly address Dezi Freeman, in case he is watching the press conference:

If Dezi Freeman is watching this, ring triple zero, and we will support a surrender plan, that option is absolutely open to him.

Victoria police are working through a strategic resourcing plan in anticipation of the search continuing into the weekend, Russell Barrettsays.

He says the messaging for locals is not to stay inside, but to “be vigilant”.

Asked how he anticipates the situation will unfold in the coming days, he says:

I hope safely. I hope for the arrest of Dezi Freeman and [to] bring him to justice for our members.

This is one of the more or the most difficult matters that I’ve dealt with and one of the most difficult matters in Victoria police’s history. The community support goes a long way to helping us work our way through it … Thank you.

In the presser just now (at around the 6:30 mark) the deputy commissioner says that they will prosecute anyone who is harboring him, thinking of harboring him, or assisting him.

7 min mark in the presser. "It is on the record that he is being investigated by our SOCIT ... our sexual offences child investigation team."

Right before that the deputy commissioner says they are working on the theory that he is still in the area.
Personally, I am pretty sure they might put out inaccurate info as well as accurate info. All part of police strategy.

imo

While I think this would be he stupidest thing to do ( assisting / harboring him ) , these nutters don't think like us, they don't respect the law like we do. They are probably celebrating the death of 2 cops IMO

But I do think it's unlikely seeing how it all played out .

I saw a photo of the one of the dogs earlier and I think they may have been wearing doggy boots :)

You're right, I've worded it wrong. I meant to say there would be a lot of people who would support him, silently or otherwise, and that I believe there is a high chance that some of those people would assist / hide him, if the opportunity arose.

If you're interested, check out the posts and comments about him on X.

Superintendent Kahan says police were at the Porepunkah Primary School this morning to provide reassurance to the school community.

He acknowledges that emergency text messages are still being sent to people in the area, but says Porepunkah residents are no longer being told to stay inside and instead are now being told to be vigilant.

Does this mean people can go back to their homes now, or just for the ones that are already stuck inside at home ?

Agreed.

And people like this would likely think that the two murdered police officers don't even exist. Crisis actors, etc. If you've been around these people or observed them on the internet, you know how they are.

Agree.
They are very tight lipped (as compared to the US counterparts). I also think they would rather accept looking in press conferences like they are dumber than the guy they're chasing, to trick him into feeling smarter and safer than he is.

Also, if there are others in the area with his same beliefs (who may consider helping him out), police would know exactly who they are. These people tend to constantly get to the police's attention so I'm pretty confident they wouldn't go unnoticed.

I saw a photo of the one of the dogs earlier and I think they may have been wearing doggy boots :)
I love that!! 😊

Yes, I agree. He probably has many sympathisers.

I think what tends to happen is that these situations bring out a lot of keyboard warriors. What may seem like a lot of support for idiots like this one, is amplified simply because very few people get drawn in to idiotic arguments. Let's face it, "X" and various other social media platforms, are hardly forums where wise people get together to have rational, sensible debates.

I read that last night they opened up some roads and allowed people to come and go.
If I see the link again, I will add it.
