Police dogs involved in Porepunkah raid last night, ABC understands

By Andi Yu

Reporter Kate Meade says the ABC understands there was a raid in in Chandler Court, Porepunkah last night.

"What we know so far is...that there was about 10 police officers that went to a home in Chandler Court, that the canine unit was involved and that a number of people were taken away," she tells ABC Radio Melbourne.

"We do know that there was a PA [system] used, locals are telling us that, and that they could hear, 'come to the front door', 'arms in the air' and to have nothing in their hands.

"So that's what we know has happened overnight and that the police this morning are reminding us again that there have been no confirmed sightings of Dezi Freeman and reminding us that he is a man that is believed to be heavily armed."

Porepunkah suspect used to spy on my family with drones, says former neighbour

Loretta Quinn took out a personal safety intervention order against Dezi Freeman after a disagreement about him accessing her property

A former neighbour of the suspected Porepunkah gunman said he used to hunt for deer nearby, had an intimate knowledge of Mount Buffalo and used to spy on her, including with drones.

Loretta Quinn lived next to Dezi Freeman in Myrtleford, on the opposite side of Mount Buffalo to the site of the fatal shooting, between 2017 and 2019.

She told Guardian Australia that Freeman used her block to access the Mount Buffalo national park, which he had done frequently without issue when her property was vacant.

“He had a drone that would come across, too, and he set up a little plastic cover, on the corner of the property, like a chicken coop and he would standing there spying on you too, looking who was coming and going.”

She told Freeman he could no longer use the property, sparking a conflict between the neighbours that lasted until, she said, Freeman’s landlord forced him and his family to leave.

Former police negotiator explains how a surrender plan could work

A
By Andi Yu

Yesterday, police made a direct call to alleged gunman Dezi Freeman yesterday afternoon to surrender.

Former police negotiator and criminologist at Macquarie University Dr Vincent Hurley lets us know how this could go down.

For starters, police would first ascertain that he in fact intends to do that, Dr Hurley tells ABC Radio Melbourne.

"Just because he says he wants to surrender, given what he's done, doesn't necessarily mean that that's his intent," he said.

"So they have to be really sure that he was wedded to the idea of actually giving himself up.
Secondly, they would use very specific terms, such as "now come out with your hands up".

"They would give him really clear, basic instructions and then they would get him to repeat that back to the police negotiator so that the police know that he knows exactly what is expected," Dr Hurley explains.

"He would be told in no uncertain terms that if he made any unexpected moves, there would be dire consequences.

"In other words, if he tried to trick the police they — to be blunt — would shoot him."

Our reporter Kimberley Price is near Buckland Valley Rd, Porepunkah.

She's seen police dogs out as officials block off the road and helicopters whir overhead.

She's also reporting a heavy police presence there.

More from Porepunkah this morning

While police continued to raid properties overnight, the helicopter is out this morning flying low over the town of porepunkah.

The roadblock near Dezi Freeman’s old property that police have set up the last two afternoons has been removed.

There is now just a large sign telling people Mount Buffalo national park is closed.”

He has lasted out there longer than I expected...!!! He'd be on the nose by now, and also even more disjointed, no one to talk to, or at, no one to back up his ridiculous legal blither, no one to cook for him, I am not that convinced that he is a 'great bushman'.. he is living in a BUS! Great Bushmen do not live in buses, they build dugouts and mudbrick shelters, with solar panels and all this stuff., he is just a player at the huntin, fishin, shootin stuff, he has got caught up in his own rhetoric..

Someone wrote further back that he is a Maori. he was born and lived in Glen Waverly ,a Melbourne suburb , out east on the way to Dandenong.. then he lived in Wodonga, ....I don't know where the Maori bit comes in...

Neighbours of raided property say they saw flashing lights

“Two neighbours on the street said they did not hear anything while the raid was conducted but one said he saw flashing lights.

They said they did not know the neighbours.

It’s at least the third raid on a property within the area in 24 hours.”

At least the third raid in 24 hours? Is this unusual?

I'm still wondering where all the reported gunshots were coming from?

It would not surprise me if those nice blokes from Myrtleford Copshop were doing a bit of general tidying up of local banditry, while the going was good.

The police gave a hint in the presser yesterday that seemed to hint that Mali was not really co-operating with police IMO

Be interesting to find out where the wife sits in all this palaver.. I gather from her songwriting skills that she was a devotee of non vax stuff, not based on her non scientific degree , naturally, but on feels, but as to the rest of it, the revenge against police, the endless shouri's with the neighbors, the evictions, the actual livin in a bus, ,she comes from the Philippines to live in a bus in Porepunkah, that is one hell of a journey... I just wonder how much coercive heaviness by ol' Dez played in this scenario.

That's interesting, here is what HS reported yesterday about the presence at that property.

"The Herald Sun obtained exclusive vision of the operation, during which about six members of the Critical Incident Response Team surrounded the home with their guns drawn as they scoured the area."

"A woman who appeared to live at the house directed attending officers’ attention to the back of the property before CIRT operatives walked around the house and a nearby shed.

The operatives trained their guns on the home for several minutes while other officers walked towards the back of the house and into the shed.

A short time later, a sudden noise caught the attention of the police, who then scanned bushland behind the home with their guns still drawn."

And Herald Sun's video.
