Thai cave rescue: Expert divers from UK to guide trapped soccer team out of cave

Trapped soccer team to be guided from Thai cave by UK dive experts

Two of the UK divers expected to lead the rescue mission have been named as Rick Stanton and John Volanthen.

Four expert cave divers from UK will guide the boys out of #Thamluangcave - Rescue attempt cannot be made today - Authorities said will wait long as possible for boys and coach to regain strength, learn to SCUBA dive.

We'll see if this sticks. May change in an hour.

This is in the middle of a rain forest/rural area. I totally agree he's jumped in to hold onto the tail coats of others and raise his profile worldwide as a 'rescuer'.
ugh
I'm thankful for any help anyone is willing to offer. He owns a world class boring company. I say let them at least try to help.

I was curious about that too, then I read it in a tweet that he said MOST of the boys conditions were back to normal.
I dont know something’s fishy moo. Of course I always that...

Sigh. They’re probably all doing everything they can..this is just such a powerless hopeless feeling. I think it’s now or never, but we’ve been saying that every day...

view of the Tham Luang cave system.

So going off the horizontal drilling idea, could it be feasible with Boring’s equipment to drill into the side of the mountain to drain the problematic pools?

More pumps aren't going to help at this time.

In the meantime, crews continued drilling into the south side of the cave complex on Friday to reduce the water level. It’s estimated to take an additional 12 to 18 hours to penetrate approximately 200 meters of rock. Drilling on the north side was suspended, as engineers and geologists work to find an alternate location closer to the stranded group.
According to the document, pumping operations have not been able to significantly lower the water level deep within the cave network. Rescue crews have assessed that the ongoing effort to pump water out from the main entrance of the cave has reached a point where it’s becoming less and less effective, and placing pumps further inside the cave -- beyond the 800 meter mark, where they currently are -- does not seem possible.
Proposed ‘buddy dive’ plan to rescue boys in Thai cave could launch this weekend

Well then they need to figure out a way to get the pumps deeper inside the cave!
Water is the problem.
Getting it out, our at least keeping it from rising is paramount.

No use to undertake a monumental drilling effort, if the boys have already drowned.
imvho

FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION.

72cm wide is the narrowest and I think it was about 40cm high. You have to be slim!

There has gooot to be sooooome kind of robotic technology, or technology from NASA or NOAA or sooomethinng!!!!

For those of you who wish to, please join me in feverish prayer that God guides these heroes during their mission.

Lord hear our prayer and petition, Amen!

Maybe they think they’re drowning right now. They were about to go in and it sounded like then something suuuddenly changed things. Moo. Maybe the water started coming up like crazy or getting extra turbulent...:(

I’m afraid this is going to be a recovery mission. If they don’t and can’t get in there now it’s probably over. Moo.

Never give up hope. Never say never!!!

Eta: I feel better after watching the coverage from india linked below.

Yay! Those two are their best option definitely. Calm and collected I read.

I think they are the best option IF they choose to stick with diving them out. The kids have already met them. And since they are the first two to find the kids maybe that will build a form of trust between them. Plus, the fact that they are very experienced is good.

There has gooot to be sooooome kind of robotic technology, or technology from NASA or NOAA or sooomethinng!!!!

Some of the technology that has been used so far:
“We didn’t know what the conditions at the site would be like,” says Slanvetpan, who has been leading a 30-strong team of PTTEP engineers assisting in the search on-site. “So we tried to bring all the technology that we thought could be useful.”

This included three aerial drones, equipped with 30x optical zoom lenses, and thermal cameras. These are routinely used for carrying out high-risk inspections of potential drilling sites, but found a new role during the search – first in creating a 3D aerial map of the area, and then in spotting potential access points into the cave from above.
The benefit of the drone is that it simplifies the search,” says Slanvetpan. “They probably have 100 potential access channels into the cave. Instead of having the ground force climb up and check every location, you just need the drone.”

PTTEP also brought two underwater vehicles – one remotely operated by a human, and the other a prototype for an autonomous underwater drone that is currently in the research stage. They are equipped with sonar scanners that can create an underwater map of the cave, which could be useful to the divers working in muddy waters with very poor visibility.
However, after consulting with the SEAL team that has been exploring the cave complex, it was decided that the situation was too challenging for these vehicles to be deployed. “The terrain is much more difficult than what we’ve tested it on before,” says Slanvetpan.

I wonder why the boys are NOT wearing oxygen masks given that the O2 levels are dropping in the cave. If the levels are as suggested, at 15% or so, shouldn't they all have oxygen masks to keep them from hypoxia????

Putting in a line and hoping that it reaches where they are seated, just doesn't seem feasible to me.

So many questions and no straight answers. Very worrisome.

-the water level is still being the problem - now the 3rd chamber seem to have a probleam, we are now pumping oxygen into the cavern to reach the boys. - at the boys spot , we has used oxygen tank to maintain oxygen level. - we check oxygen level all the time

AND below is letters the boys wrote to their parents

8.00 A letter from inside the cave
The boys said not to be worried about them. They’re fine and want to eat a lot of things. Once they get out, they want to come back home immediately. Please don’t give them too many homework

Since they’ve got the oxygen line in it’s come up to 17.5% in a matter of hours, it seems to be working.

This is the new (and promising) opening found yesterday, leading into the #ThamLuang cave near the Noen Nom Sao chamber where the boys and coach are located.

There are pictures at the link

Thank you to whomever posted the link to the DM article on all the boys. Bringing over some photos and quotes on each one:

Adul Sam-on, 14

Born state-less in Myanmar, and raised by Christian teachers in Thailand, Adul Sam-on's unflinching politeness and startling ability to speak English is capturing hearts.

Adul - who also speaks Thai, Burmese, and Chinese - is being praised for his English skills in a country where less than a third of the population speaks the language.
He was the only one able to communicate with the British divers that discovered the boys on Monday night.

'What day is it?' he shouted, telling the divers they were hungry, in footage broadcast around the world after the agonising search for the boys.

Born in Myanmar's self-governing Wa State, he left his family behind aged seven to get a better education in northern Thailand, but his parents still visit him at the Christian Church where he's been taken in.

With no birth certificate, no ID card and no passport, Adul cannot legally marry, get a job or bank account, travel, own property or vote, but he refuses to let his status hold him back.

The passionate footballer also loves to play the piano and guitar, and is an accomplished student too.
