It really shows how naive they are about their situation when they’re worried about having homework, and helping their parents when they get home.

I think, whether those notes are genuine or not, that the boys are going to be in a kind of news blackout zone in the cave. The rescuers have to keep their spirits up and keep their fears to a minimum and allay as much sense of panic as they possibly can.

In that situation those notes do seem plausible that the kids might worry about homework and want to reassure their families that they are okay? The mentions of food seem consistent with people who've been starved for ten days and then on MREs and liquid nourishment to replenish their system, not anything like proper food.

IMHO, if the notes are fakes, they've been extremely well compiled from a psychological standpoint?

ETA the note from the coach has a terrible sense of guilt in it? Could someone fake that in order to have positive-sounding words but a thread of guilt running through them?

ETA 2....maybe there's some partial doctoring...for instance if a boy writes "I'm scared" that gets changed to "I'm okay"?

It's hard to tell, but if the whole things are faked, I think it's an extremely high-quality job that few people would be capable of? But the translation into English is also surprisingly excellent and flowing English, it doesn't sound like the sort of thing from an automatic translator. It would be interesting to be able to read it in the original language (for a native Thai speaker).

Good Morning I thought they would have started the rescue by now. Oh those letters from the boys breaks my heart it shows they are children and they seems to have no clue that the world is watching,

Yes. The special food requests sound exactly like something my 15 year old soccer player daughter would ask for. Sort of like- “Since I have to suffer in this cave can you buy me my favorite cheeseburger when I get out?”

The coach’s message to the parents sounded like he was embarrassed and filled with guilt. Poor guy.

I could see the SEALS telling the kids that their parents are worried about them so we need you to write a letter and tell them that you’re okay. The last thing they need is for the parents to panic more than they already are.

Amount of oxygen has reduced inside cave complex. Fresh air being pumped in. Officers who can be withdrawn from area are sent out. Number of people going in is now limited. At least 4 people always stay with children, coach: Narongsak

Reading those messages about the stuff you mention (the restaurant food, food requests, etc) brought tears to my eyes....I hope this is over for them soon and everything turns out well. I'm watching and hoping and praying.

btw, I keep forgetting:
So it seems that "cloud seeding" really is a thing!
Can this not be done here?
I was half asleep when those posts were going on -- I will go back and see what the consensus is on that.
Anybody know off-hand?
But, it sounds like just what we need however.

Who's able to do it?

The initial euphoria in Thailand and around the world that all 13 people had been found alive has given way four days later to deep anxiety over the challenge of getting them out. The option of waiting months until seasonal floodwaters recede now seems less promising, but the practical problems of ferrying 12 children and one adult safely through a nearly three-mile maze of perils remain daunting, all the more so since none of the children are said to be able to swim, much less use diving gear.

Horribly misleading headline on this one:

Boys Should Come Out Today: Official

Operations chief Narongsak Osottanakorn said that bringing the boys out could begin today if their health and other conditions are favorable.

“I’m worried that if it rains and the water level increases, it might reach the [sand beach where they’re trapped],” he said. “Therefore, if today or in a few days, the weather is good or water is dropping, factoring in their health and readiness. We will discuss in great detail if we will be able to bring them out.”

Experts from the USA, in hydrology, geophysics, and satellite communications were involved in planning and implementing the diversion of water away from the #ThamLuang cave during the past 2 days in 17 key areas. 80% of work is now completed.

Who's able to do it?

They used it for the olympics in Beijing so they have the capability over there. It's quite expensive though and I worry that's why they aren't considering it.

I've heard of it, but I didn't think it had a very high success rate. Mind you that's from when I've heard of it being done in drought regions to try to attract rain. I suppose it might be better if it's done on a cloud that's full of rain and you just want it to drop the rain sooner?

There was an example given earlier that it might have been used at the Beijing Olympics, but would that have been for monsoon-type weather?

I'm skeptical when it comes to things like climate modifications in case there are unforeseen consequences. What if the seeding just caused the cloud to drop even more rain on the mountain instead of dropping the rain before it got to the mountain?

I would also think that part of the problem is that monsoon clouds tend to build up alongside high mountains and then it builds up so much that the rain comes down. It's not just weather but also geography? Not that I claim to know anything about it.

Speaking of the initial euphoria, the title of this thread is a huge punch in the gut. It feels wrong especially with a diver having died.

I know it already was edited to say they were trapped. I'm wondering if we can make it:

Thailand - 12 Boys And Coach TRAPPED In Cave , 23 June 2018 #2

Or something similar. That Found Alive just hurts to see right now. I'm probably just being difficult though!

I hit report on a post suggesting that it be changed from 'missing' to 'trapped' and also the other suggestion you've made. But in my report I only asked for it to be changed to 'trapped' and the lovely mod did that...but I agree the title needs the 'believe' part removing so that it makes more sense.

I'm scared for the other part to be removed...I don't think we should request that without a consensus among all the posters here...

But anyway, you should be able to hit 'report' on your own post to request that the 'believe' bit is removed. Maybe "12 boys and coach still trapped in cave" would work?

ETA I've reported both our posts with a request for further title modification.

I’m sure he is sending some of the geotechnical engineers. They don’t just solve traffic problems.

“Geotechnical engineering is the branch of civil engineering concerned with the engineering behavior of earth materials. Geotechnical engineering is important in civil engineering, but also has applications in military, mining, petroleum and other engineering disciplines that are concerned with construction occurring on the surface or within the ground. Geotechnical engineering uses principles of soil mechanics and rock mechanics to investigate subsurface conditions and materials; determine the relevant physical/mechanical and chemical properties of these materials; evaluate stability of natural slopes and man-made soil deposits; assess risks posed by site conditions; design earthworksand structure foundations; and monitor site conditions, earthwork and foundation construction”

Elon tends to do quite a bit when he is able to help. He can get publicity tons of other ways. He may have thought they had it under control a few weeks ago. Better late than never!

He is just promoting his companies. If he really wanted to help with the rescue, he would have gotten involved weeks ago.

I found this in Wikipedia:

“Thailand started a rain-making project in the late-1950s, known today as the Royal Rainmaking Project. Its first efforts scattered sea salt in the air to catch the humidity and dry ice to condense the humidity to form clouds.[52] The project took about ten years of experiments and refinement. The first field operations began in 1969 above Khao Yai National Park. Since then the Thai government claims that rainmaking has been successfully applied throughout Thailand and neighboring countries.[53]On 12 October 2005 the European Patent Officegranted to King Bhumibol Adulyadej the patent EP 1 491 088 Weather modification by royal rainmaking technology.[54]

I imagine Elon probably has knowledge of this and/or knows/employs people who do.

Thailand cave rescue: Why can't they drill from above, other questions you want answered

In the late 1970s, Wilson and others rescued a group of college students in Kentucky under somewhat similar circumstances. The students went into a dry cave that, after a heavy rain, became filled with enough water to block their way out. Eventually, all of the students were rescued after divers kept them well stocked with blankets and food.

Does anybody know anything about that Kentucky incident? I googled it and I can't find anything about it. All the search results lead back to that story.

I suppose he had better follow through and make good on it now, otherwise then the whole world will see if he's just a PR-grubbing-dirtbag.

Although that one is rain*making* - we don't want that!
No no no! We need rain diverting, which I think is what cloud-seeding is. Unless cloud-seeding encompasses all weather modification?
Thank you for looking this up!
