‘He loved them more than himself’: How a 25-year-old former monk kept the Thai soccer team alive

He [Cosch Ekapol] found kindred spirits in the boys, many of whom had grown up poor or were stateless ethnic minorities, common in this border area between Myanmar and Thailand.

He helped Nopparat, the head coach, devise a system where the boys’ passion for soccer would motivate them to excel academically. If they got certain grades in school, they would be rewarded with soccer gear, such as fresh studs for their cleats or a new pair of shorts. The two spent time looking for sponsors and used the Moo Pa team to prove to the boys that they could become something more than their small town would suggest — even professional athletes.

“He gave a lot of himself to them,” Nopparat said. He would ferry the boys to and from home when their parents could not and took responsibility for them as if they were his own family.

He also kept the boys on a strict training schedule, according to physical education teachers at the school field where they practiced. That included biking across the hills that surround Mae Sai.

Thanks for posting this. Important to note that majority of even the bottom middle class in Thailand send the children to boarding school. This is a financially poor rural village where Coach has truly given the boys more than what would be without his efforts. These parents have been very quick to defend him.

A couple of things about the graphic showing Choke Point:

1. At least the boys are familiar with it, having crawled up and over to get into the cave, many will have been in the cave before and done the reverse journey. Hopefully this will make it easier for them.

2. I'm pretty sure Mars Bars aren't that big any more *sobs*

And they supposedly have gone to this cave a handful of times. This is good. If they know what to expect that should help them. Hopefully the SEALS will drill it into them that getting through that particular area will be the hardest part, and to just push through it.

"In complete darkness" but everyone in the graphic is shown with headlights. Must be the Daily Mail? Oh yes it is!
The British cave rescuers were equipped with special scuba lights that they deemed inadequate for the "coffee" water encountered. Developers are working on adapting illumination appropriate for this specific diving rescue. Divers don lighting... this graphic posted for "choke point" illustration purposes only

Wow. This isn't too bad. The chance for rain isn't as high as I expected and it's very low on Monday. The rest of the week isn't too bad either. Perfect. I hope it stays that way.

Help. I'm lost (again). It looks like 100% chance of rain on Monday to me.

Signs Mount That Rescue May Have Begun

As rumors grow that the operation to rescue at least one of 12 boys trapped in a flooded cave has begun in secret, the surge of activity outside suggests something is at least imminent.

No statements have been made since a morning briefing when the former governor leading the rescue operation said the conditions were right to bring them out today.

Every day has seen hundreds of rescuers, divers, laborers, soldiers, medics and volunteers swarm ling the site. Since this morning, that activity has multiplied.
