Not sign a release for a specific excursion, which is a dangerous cave trip? Yep, that would have gone over really well in the US. Just because you are fine with letting your kid to train for a soccer game, doesn't mean you are fine with your kid going on a dangerous trip underground.
I'm pretty sure none of the parents signed a permission slip for the cave trip. My understanding is that the parents had one of two choices. 1. Come and pick up their kids after soccer practice. Several of the parents did that. 2. Don't pick them up, and let them do whatever it is that kids are going to do on their own. Including maybe exploring a cave.

I don't know specifically about Thailand, but in most Asian cultures, kids doing risky activities and even getting minor injuries is not considered a bad thing. It's considered part of the learning process. For example there is no movement in Asia to make playgrounds child safe. Most playgrounds in Asia have lots of high monkey bars and stuff, that kids fall off of and get hurt all the time. Most Asian people believe that these type of injuries will teach kids to be more careful. I tend to agree with them.

Grateful they're not showing the boys.
I felt really bad earlier today after someone posted a video of one boy being taken on a stretcher to a helicopter.
Please... they said no photos or filming for a reason =(

Unless you saw one I didn't, I think that was not of any of the boys. I saw a man in a yellow shirt and blue jeans on the stretcher. I don't know what his position may have been in relation to the rescue, or if he could have even been a reporter who got ill. I don't think pics of the boys have emerged yet

Testing for 3 more hours in LA, then it’s on a plane to Thailand

I'm guessing the kids will be all rescued by the time he gets this to Thailand. Nice of him to try, but I don't see this being used unless one of the kids is too weak to make it out. Seems like it would be more cumbersome for the divers to pull this pod with extra weight through the narrow cave openings than just pulling a kid with a mask who can kick and help a little bit. JMO.

Does Elon Musk own a company called Wing Technology? This is a hoax if he doesn't.
Arcata’s Wing Inflatables, SpaceX collaborate on Thailand cave rescue

"ARCATA – When SpaceX’s Elon Musk calls with an emergency plan to save a dozen children trapped in a flooded cave, even at 6 a.m., you don’t let it go to voicemail.

Andrew Branagh certainly didn’t last Friday morning, and that's how the CEO of Arcata-based Wing Inflatables suddenly found himself and his company engulfed in an unprecedented day-long effort to invent, build, test and ship potentially life-saving “pods” to northern Thailand."

I thought they were already in Thailand.

Me too. And the fact that they are there or just arrived would coincide with Elon's communications re 8 hours to biild then 17 hours to thailand. Think pool pic was from when they were testing after build.

What is the rationale for not allowing the rescued boys to be with their families or not tell their families they have been rescued?

To keep them on an equal footing. I think its a cultural thing but if they're all focusing on all of the boys, its healthier than some knowing and others not.

I also think the authorities want the focus to be on the boys getting whatever medical care they need before they have a 'mass' reuniting with their families.

I noticed that there seemed to be a 'ward' at the hospital, with quite a number of beds in it. Bet that's where the parents of survivors (hope its all of them) get to first see them.

I saw that one too.
He looked like an adult to me, I agree, possibly a reporter.

The one I saw was on a Thai FB-page, looked like someone filming from behind a tree.

I think I can kind of understand that. Reporters would be all over the families of the ones who are now out, and the other 9 are still in danger, and their families still experiencing extreme anxiety.

They are a "team" and it seems fitting that there be no celebrating until they are all out.

Thank you for offering this perspective. If the families are okay with this approach it's okay with me, of course.

They both have also designed & constructed some equipment.

John Volanthen - Wikipedia

Volanthen designs and constructs some of his own diving equipment, and has been called a "technical guru."[13] He designed a mapping device that collects information while diving.[14] He also designs and modifies his own rebreathers to increase their compactness and efficiency.[13]

.....

Stanton is a technical diver, developing his own diving gear to great effect. He developed two closed-circuit rebreather units; this novel technology has been "instrumental in his achieving cave diving depth records around the world."[12] One modification was to allow the rebreather to be worn on the side of the body rather than the chest or back. This is advantageous in fitting through smaller spaces. He builds prototypes of his designs and tests them in swimming pools before using them in caves.[5]

Richard Stanton (cave diver) - Wikipedia

Dedicated and devoted to the sport.

And this is why they want those two experts to rest now and go back in tomorrow. They are the best of the best and have had contact with the boys for days now. I wager a guess that the boys completely trust them and that would make it so much easier, if not crucial, to get them through that tight spot (or spots?) without a mishap or a panic.

I saw lots of tanks on site, and of course, they are refilled.

The tanks generate heat as the air is pressurized. There is a limit to how fast they can do it. It is standard practice to put the tanks in a cold water bath to speed the process.

For general info: The boy's tanks are most likely filled with surface air, not oxygen. The rescue divers may have mixed gases because of the repetitive dives, but they can't know how the boys would react to mixed gas. I don't think they would introduce a variable they didn't have to.

Per earlier reporting the boys are on the front divers tank.

Thailand cave rescue begins with four out of 12 boys freed in day of drama

An elite group of 10 international cave divers, working with five Thai navy Seals, entered the cave at about 10am, with some heading for the boys’ chamber and others stationed a few hundred metres away at an area called Monk’s Junction.

A second group of three foreign divers entered at about 2pm “to support diving efforts”, according to a statement issued by the command centre, with additional rescuers in place helping operate a rope system in a difficult middle stretch of the track.

[Richard Harris, an Australian doctor with extensive cave-diving experience, ,examined the and approved the operation]

On Sunday morning, Osatanakorn said the one-mile path from the cave entrance to the third chamber that has been a staging ground for the operation was not completely dry but mostly walkable. “Yesterday the water levels were the lowest they had been,” he said.

“Although there are some slightly difficult parts [where] we have to bend or crawl, we can say that we can just walk through it.”

He declined to say whether the boys would need to dive at all in the 1.1-mile journey from where they are sheltering to the third chamber. “What I can tell you is that there are many parts that they can walk,” he said.

A 25-year-old Thai navy Seal, who declined to be named, described one of the most difficult parts of the journey. “The hole is really small, I have to take off my air tank to crawl through it. As I do, I feel the edges of the hole on both my back and chest,” he said.

bbm Poor reporting. All graphics I've seen put the Monk's Junction about 2km away from where the boys are. This should have been clear to the writer by now. Makes me mistrust the rest of the article.

Testing for 3 more hours in LA, then it’s on a plane to Thailand

It might come too late though. Flight was said to be 17 hours, plus a test run etc ... It's a pity if it comes too late. This would have been very safe, looks like ....

One report today after the rescue said that the boys and their buddy diver had constant physical contact. This graphic does not show that. I wonder how they would keep physical contact in those tight spaces.

There is no excuse for keeping those boys from their parents, it just prolongs their trauma :(

Ah okay. If they're already there then hopefully they can be of help.

I would find that SOOOO unacceptable if it were my child. Guess in Thailand they don't have any choice in the matter.

I hope the code red was indeed a rumor, and there's not a boy in the hospital in critical condition with his family completely unaware.

Hello all you loverly people! Wait, don't be afraid of me - I'm just not usually on here at this hour -- going on 04:30 (yes, a.m., morning, before dawn) here in hot, muggy Japan, so just checking in on our boys.
I have a quick Q, please...
This concerns me:
"Thailand cave rescue begins with four out of 12 boys freed in day of drama
Eight remain trapped in cave in Mae Sai, with rescue operation to resume within 24 hours"

Twelve boys -- eight remain trapped.

Now surely Michael Safi knows there were 13 souls trapped in there.
The coach is only mentioned once in the entire article, somewhere obscurely in the middle.
Why is Coach being squeezed out?
What angle would this be taking?

Why do they want us to forget about Coach?

Is it because he was responsible, and they are planning to take legal action against him when he gets out, and they do not want to upset MaeSai13 supporters?
Or is it because they are wanting to shield him, hoping rabble rousers will forget about him and not demand his head on a platter - while just being contented about the 12 boys saved?
Or is it because he is in very grave condition, and they're not sure if he will make it, and don't want to say anything at all?
Or is it because he has already died, and they'll report it when this is all over?
Lotta "Or is its"
This may already be somewhere here in the posts...
I'll go back and skim. but if anyone who may know something would like to weigh in?
TY! ❤️
Oh, also... it says eight remain trapped...
but not necessarily in conjunction with, or specifically in the same sentence as 12 boys...
It's a headline and a subheadline.
Do only eight, in total, remain trapped? Is Coach already out?
They say four boys, but is it really four boys & one coach out?

To me they should be saying Nine remain trapped, if nine are still trapped... ya know?

Thailand cave rescue begins as four of 12 boys freed in day of drama
。。。
ETA, well, I guess that wasn't a quick Q, afterall, but several lengthy Qs! lol

rsbm

I think it was on CNN they said all the boys will be in a quarantine unit on the 8th floor of the hospital. But CNN's reporting has been a bit poor for this whole story imo, so take it with a grain of salt.

Someone in Thailand reached out to Musk, via Tweet. He initially responded that the people there (Thailand) had it under control. He didn’t deliberately insert himself, but he then sent tunneling equipment, etc. And of course he then started thinking of and working on different solutions- a guy like that doesn’t just turn his brain off and go golfing. Maybe they won’t need his help, but how can it hurt?

I've been wondering about the coach too. They said he will be the last to come out but I wonder if it's because he is deceased. I sure hope not.
