Osatanakorn (head of the joint command centre coordinating the operation) said the first four boys to be freed had woken up in good condition and were asking to be served khao pad krapow [basil chicken with rice]. But doctors were still restricting their diets. “They can eat normal food now, but only ‘fluid’ food like diluted porridge,” he said.

A few days back there was a quote attributed to someone in the Thai government, I think something like the junior justice minister? That quote said something like "if anyone runs into Coach Ek around town, please give him a big hug from me"

I really hope that is indicative of what the whole justice department is feeling and that they won't give him major charges.

Yes I also remember it was the justice minister. He wrote on facebook that Ek (the coach) was the one he would like to hug the most. (Is there no 'heart' emoticon here?)

I wonder if the two main British divers who found the boys could get a Knighthood for this? Any English members here able to weigh in on if that's likely or possible? I don't know the requirements of Knighthood, but it just crossed my mind they could be honored that way.

I don't know the requirements either, but I sure feel like they'd deserve to be knighted! They are knights in, uh, wetsuit armour! Pardon the jest. If it was my child they got out of there I wouldn't know what to do with myself from thankfulness.

I don't know if this is totally accurate, but it gives me a good feeling to believe it:

In Daring Underwater Cave Rescue, 4 of 13 Thai Are Freed
One by one, the first four to be rescued emerged after a treacherous, hourslong journey through the tight, underwater passageways of Tham Luang Cave. Skilled cave divers, part of a team assembled from around the world, hugged the four to their bodies as they swam through the dark.

Teams of divers will attempt to get the remaining five people – four boys and their 25-year-old coach – out of the cave system on Tuesday, multiple local media outlets report.

Officials also hope the last phase of the operation goes faster. After the first rescue on Sunday took 11 hours, Monday's mission was finished in nine hours. At a news conference Monday night, Chiang Rai acting Gov. Narongsak Osattanakorn said the teams are hoping to complete the final extraction in four to five hours, according to Thai Public Broadcasting.

Not sure if this has been posted yet but I've found it has been very handy for visualizing the spaces and challenges of the rescue:

But they have been eating since last Monday, otherwise how would they have gained strength? I don't understand why there's now doubts that they are not being fed, or not enough?

I think they have only been drinking water (through a purifier) and power gel - probably a protein, carb gel for emergencies. Maybe something similar to this: Accel Gel - Fast Acting, Protein Powered Energy Gel

Solid food will be introduced slowly and not too much of it as to not stress their systems.

If they are not being fed, maybe they're not as well as we're being told?
You would think food would be given pretty quickly if they are healthy.....and conscious. They might start with frequent, small portions but they would feed them.

Well, none of them are 'healthy.' They are malnourished, have been cold and damp for weeks, sitting on muddy rocks, in the dark, surrounded by bats and moldy bacteria.

So they are physically weak and fighting lots of internal immune responses, along with emotional issues and potential debilitating diseases trying to take hold.

I think the doctors are trying to control their diet , to lessen the impact upon their digestive function, and get an idea how things are working right now. Then they can add new things slowly, to see how it goes.

I think it's quite likely they'll get an MBE or OBE in the next honours list. Services to the British caving industry or international rescue or something. Hope so, anyway.

I think most probably had a flashlight, but how good they were or how long they lasted I can't say. I suspect the coach made sure they rationed their use as much as they could. And being barefoot probsbly gave them better grip for climbing on slippery rocks...?

Interrsting to go back and read how they planned for the trip and what they did to hold out so long.

Before their rescue:
‘Where Have You Guys Been?’: Thai Cave Challenge Quickly Became a Trap
The drama started two weeks ago, when Ekkapol Chantawong, assistant coach for the Wild Boars soccer club, decided to take some players on a trip after a Saturday practice match.

“Ok everyone, drink a glass of water and please go to bed. Bicycle gang, see you at the school at 8:20,” he wrote in a group chat on Facebook Messenger on Friday, June 22, which was viewed by the Journal. “Don’t forget to have breakfast and pack lunch everyone.”

The next morning at 6:36, Mr. Ekkapol sent another message: “All, don’t forget to bring your flashlight.”

“I have one but it’s very lame, bro. Hahaha,” one boy replied
.
-
After soccer practice, Coach Ek made sure his players had water before drinking some himself, people who know the club say. He often took the team on excursions.

[June 23]
The Wild Boars divided into two groups for a practice match, then got ready to cycle to the caves.

Many had already been there several times, an experience some found daunting.
-
Dom, the captain, is afraid of the dark, says his 13-year-old girlfriend, Nutchanan Ramkeaw, who says he once refused to go out to get something to eat because it was nighttime. He sees the cave trips as a challenge that he can brave in a group, she says.

Another boy, 13-year-old Songpon Kanthawong, known as Pangpond, had been too scared to venture further than the cave’s mouth in previous trips but was determined to join this time. [his mother forbade hus going, so he was not there]

[Entered cave @ 2 pm, @ 3 pm there was a suddend 1/2 hour rainfall, steady rain from 7 pm on; by 8 om parents were contscting the head coach; parents & cosch went to the cave @ 9 pm and saw all the bikes outside and alerted officials. Intense rain continued for several more days. ]

The boys brought some snacks and a little water, and each had a flashlight, Thai authorities say. They ate and drank sparingly; local press report Mr. Ekkapol stinted himself so his charges could have more. He told the boys not to use their flashlights at the same time, to conserve batteries.

When they ran out of water, Mr. Ekkapol warned the boys not to drink the muddy floodwaters and to sip water dripping from the cave instead, according to Thai authorities. He told the boys not to move around much to conserve energy, and taught them meditation techniques to stay calm.

On Day 10, as the 13 were sitting in darkness, two British cave divers who were surveying a passage inside the cave system stuck their heads out of the water and saw the group in front of them.

Leading up to the rescue:
Divers Search Flooded Cave In Thailand For 12 Missing Boys And Their Soccer Coach

At the mouth of Tham Luang Nang Non cave, located in a verdant forest reserve that borders Myanmar, park officials found every indication that the boys and coach entered the cave but never came out: a motorcycle, 11 bicycles, backpacks, soccer shoes and sports equipment, The Bangkok Post reported.

Rescuers found footprints and handprints inside the cave, fueling hopes that the boys are still alive, Narin said, according to the AP. He added that their athleticism could help them survive the ordeal.

Sand, mud and flooding prevented the divers from accessing the passage to the chamber, a park official said.

Authorities have also asked nervous villagers to stop burning incense at the entrance of the cave out of concern that it could deplete oxygen inside, The New York Times reported.

In the past, tourists have been rescued from flooded caves after the waters receded days later, officials told media outlets.

I think some of what's written there has maybe been translated as an 'initiation' but it seems to me more a test of fitness, stamina, and fortitude, which is not exactly the same thing.

I think we also need to take into consideration that the caves are a part of their local environment. Whenever you have something like this, a cave, a hill, whatever in a kid's environment, there's a chance they'll go out and explore it...these aren't the first boys to do this, and they won't be the last.

One interesting thing, Narongsak Osotthanakorn said all boys we’re conscious today, implying at least one of the boys rescued yesterday were not. #ThaiCaveRescue #Thailand

But they have been eating since last Monday, otherwise how would they have gained strength? I don't understand why there's now doubts that they are not being fed, or not enough?

Opening post (sorry, I don't remember who it was or how far back) probably meant they were without real food for many days before being found. Then they started getting those bagged juice-like nutritional rations (sorry again, I don't remember what they are called) .

Once at the hospital, they were not given what we would consider food ... their bodies would not be ready.

Did this ever happen?

Senior health officials to give a media briefing at Chiang Rai hospital before midnight tonight presumably to discuss the health of eight young footballers now freed from flooded #thamluangcave

This is not directed at you BUF, but responding to the media person's post--I think she was speculating and I think she was incorrect, JMO. I honestly don't see officials releasing any detailed health info on the condition of the kids anytime soon or ever. We might hear more details later from families or if the children themselves are interviewed (possibly years later even). IMO, the only reason the officials would tell the press anything about the boys' treatment is if something was wrong that requires experts from outside Thailand-- then the share of info could be to get the specialist needed or because they are bringing in a specialist and it can not be kept quiet. The kids are in the hands of Thai doctors and nurses now and their health info will probably be kept private with officials only saying they are in "good health", regardless of their condition. JMO.

Who said they're not being fed?

No, they're being fed porridge but yesterday they were supposedly asking nurses for chicken and rice. Rice is easily digestible and according to earlier reports, I thought they had rice once they were found in the cave.
Then, there was a report about them getting basically chips but not proper nutrients.......I dunno, the reporting is all over the place.

Just saying that if they are healthy, why can't they have chicken and rice?
That's tummy friendly......in a healthy person.

The fact that they cannot have what they've supposedly asked for, makes me wonder how 'well' they really are.......that's all.

I’ve suffered with a Eating disorder. I can understand the food. They have to be careful with feedings. This talks about refeeding syndrome. Sorry if is been mentioned.
They will have a feast soon!

Someone here suggested that might not be such a literal translation and might mean more along the lines of "they're awake and alert".

I wonder if they could have hug-carried them and still managed to follow the guideline. Trying to think thru how that would work without them being kind of strapped together. I like the thought of it because it seems like it would really cut down on panic.

I hope as many of the elite foreign divers as possible can meet the boys and their families before they go back to their home countries. Or maybe they can all be invited back for a special party in a few months?

I think they are eating.
