For those who have never been in a wet cave, the above link of a cave in WestVirginia shows what it is like. In the passages from one chamber (room) to another you can be walking or crawling through water. Then at some point the water may just drop down through a hole.

But when it rains outside that same passage may fill up totally with water. And as long as it continues to rain, the passageway will stay filled. Which is why you don't ever want to go into a wet cave when it is going to rain.

Unfortunately the reality of this particular situation may be that, depending on how far into the cave they went, the bodies may be either unrecoverable or not be able to be recovered until months from now when the rainy season is over.

The cave may end up to be the grave of these 12 boys and <modsnip>who led them to their deaths.

<modsnipped- not necessary and not victim friendly>

There are people posting on twitter that a SEAL has reached Pattaya Beach, which is where the team and their coach is believed to be stranded. They are waiting to confirm. mthai on Twitter

BTW I'm going out of my mind with my eyes glued to twitter. Rescuers are getting close to the end of the cave and we should know pretty soon if they find any signs of life.:):(

I wonder whether they are able to hear the machines used to drill/widen holes into the mountain, and the pumps? Would that cause an echo or vibrations that they could hear/feel?

It's been a week today .... it looks very bleak now ... hoping for a miracle today!

New article: AP Explains: Why cave search for Thai boys is so complicated

Some possible good info from the article:

Rescuers have found some of the boys’ belongings in chambers farther back from the entrance and it is believed the boys have gone deeper into the cave to seek dry ground.

SURVIVAL CHANCES

According to Mirza, the boys’ youth and health is to their advantage and if the cave is not too cold, they should be able to survive four to five days with no water and a month or more with water but no food. “The biggest concern is them getting desperate and trying to enter swift moving water,” he said. Authorities have said the cave is warm enough inside that hypothermia should not be an issue.

I wonder if there is fresh water seepage through rocks. I hope so.

Replying to @mthai

#Thamluangcave #thamluang #ถ้ำหลวง [FYI] there are three spots in the cave that are filled with water. The water doesnt fill the entire cave. Hall 1 - Water level is decreasing. Pumping is effective. Hall 2 - Water level is constant. The team is able to maintain water level.

FYI, the tweets I'm posting are often from private accounts replying to "mthai", an official news channel in Thai language. These private people are translating the official tweets to English.

These rescuers sure seem optimistic that the missing are still alive. That helps me keep the hope.

mthai twitter feed is now reporting that they will stop tweeting live to avoid confusion.

I'll see if I can find someone else with updates.

ETA: they haven't stopped. They are still tweeting what's going on. At the moment ambulances rehearse rescues.

Search teams practise evacuation for missing Thai boys

Thai rescue teams searching for 12 boys trapped in a waterlogged cave practised evacuation and medical procedures on Saturday, as the desperate search went into seventh day.

Medical teams staged drills on Saturday to prepare for their possible rescue as worries loomed over how the boys might be pulled out of the Tham Luang cave if and when they are found.

Ambulances and helicopters were on standby for the drills Saturday morning at the bustling rescue site in northern Chiang Rai province.

"It's to set up a system to practice what to do until we can get them to hospital," Chiang Rai governor Narongsak Osottanakorn said late Friday.

Sometimes I try to translate some of my Thai friends facebook posts and most of what it gives me is rubbish. Thais have polite titles for every situation and if a person addressed a colleague who is in a superior position they use the title Pee and their name. You can imagine what google translate does with that.

Lots of things going on there. SEAL has entered 3rd chamber and set up shop there so to speak. They are checking all the cables and pumps. Another pump has been brought in. Weather okay so far, no strong rains. They are rappelling down a shaft and have reached another chamber, exploring that now. Etc.
