There has been a long (and long-awaited) press conference at the entrance to the cave. Michael Safi is sending through reports from it.

There is no firm date to rescue the boys, said an army spokesman. More water was being removed from the cave than was seeping in, but the levels had not dropped enough to make extraction safe.

There has been no contact between the boys and their families so far. A phone was sent into the caves but the seal around the phone was destroyed by the waves and water flooded in.

The spokesman said the children are doing well and so is the coach, they know a huge crowd is waiting for them outside.
A priority in the rescue mission is getting the kids in touch with their parents. “Then lots of pressure will be relieved,” said the army spokesman.

Doctors have dealt with small outer wounds that the boys have suffered and are being trained in how to keep spirits high.

The Thai official overseeing the rescue operation of a soccer team trapped in a flooded cave says the boys have been practicing wearing diving masks and breathing.

Officials have said that teaching the 12 boys and their coach to dive may be the only way to get them out of the cave, but other options are being explored.

Chiang Rai provincial governor Narongsak Osatanakorn said on Wednesday that while the team has been practicing with masks, he doesn’t believe they have attempted any practice dives.

He said it is unknown when an extraction could be attempted, but it is unlikely to be Wednesday and that any extraction has to be “100 percent safe.”

This is such a roller coaster. Just read that the face mask is too big for one of the little guy’s so they have to find another that will fit. For now they are mostly focusing on draining the water. Also the current isn’t safe enough for them to practice diving. It’s still too strong.

Wrapped in emergency blankets and appearing visibly frail, 12 boys and their adult coach said hello to the outside world in a brief video message Wednesday from deep inside a cave in northern Thailand where they have been trapped for eleven days.

A video shared by the Thai Navy SEALs leading the rescue mission shows them introducing themselves and stating their age. “Sawadee krap,” each boy says with his palms together in wai, the traditional Thai greeting. A second video shows a medic treating their feet and gaunt legs.

One boy asked if he could have some food.

“You guys are about to get a meal,” the cameraman assured him as the medic checked his watch.
Trapped Thai Soccer Team Sends a Message From the Cave

I disagree with the Time writer. They look skinny but I don't think they look frail. They look to be tired and dirty, but in very good shape under the circumstances. They will eat and regain the strength needed to get out. JMO.

Thai kids are skinny, unless they are city kids and into the all pervading junk food.

Yes, I agree. they look like typical sized boys from that part of the world. They appear healthy IMO.

Luckily, they are all soccer players. So they are in good shape and have strong leg muscles and some endurance and lung strength. Boys that age are very resilient, athletic and quick learners. I think they will be able to do what is needed, with the help of their Seal team.

BBC has the video now too for anyone who couldn't see it on twitter or facebook: Video shows Thai cave boys in good health

Lit by torches and with divers sitting alongside, they each give their name and the traditional "wai" greeting, putting their palms together.

Two other videos show the group having some light scratches treated by a military doctor. The boys are also again asking how soon food is coming.

Written on a rock in the cave can be seen the name of the football team and of the Navy Unit involved in the rescue.

Right now the weather is the sunniest it’s been in all twleve days. The governor was quoted as saying, “he’s never seen anything like it.”
In my experience that is very unusual. Once the wet season starts it usually rains heavily at least once a day for a few hours. But it is incredible rain, and if you get caught in it you will be wet through, even your underwear will dripping wet.

So they’re still hungry? Poor kids.
Boys that age are always hungry and Thais are grazers. They eat all day long, but Thai food is healthy, rice, lots of veg and a little bit of pork or chicken.

I wonder if the videos we are getting are delayed by several hours due to having to be sent back through the tunnels before uploading? Earlier today we heard they were being sent pork and rice. Perhaps these videos were taken before the food arrived? I hope they have eaten more than energy gel by now!

I suppose that there is a limit to how much can be taken in and out, considering how long it takes to get there. They would have polished that off, quickly.

They were sending in 4 months supply of food. Hopefully it is there already, in case the cave gets cut off from sudden rain.
