One of the Chilean miners who miraculously survived 10 weeks underground in 2010 has advice for the Thai soccer team currently trapped in a waterlogged cave: Don't give up hope.

Omar Reygadas and 32 other miners were digging in northern Chile when the mine suddenly caved in, trapping them about 2,300 feet below ground. Rescue efforts to reach the miners were arduous, and when all 33 finally emerged alive 69 days later, their survival made headlines around the world.

The globe's biggest football tournament has proved an event full of shocks and surprises, but the Wild Boar team is on the minds of its organizers and some of the sport's greatest stars.

"It is terrible news and the world of football hopes that someone can find a way to take these kids out of there," former Real Madrid and Brazilian star Ronaldo told reporters at a FIFA media event. Ronaldo won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and claimed the golden boot award after scoring eight goals in that tournament.

'Be strong'

Football's governing body FIFA told CNN Sport it was in close contact with the Football Association of Thailand about the boys' plight.

"It is with great joy that we have received the news that the 12 boys and their football coach have been found alive after nine days missing in a flooded cave in Thailand," said FIFA in a statement.

"We hope that with the help of the rescue team, the boys and their coach will be brought safely out of the cave so that they can be reunited with their families."

That's great to hear, but I suppose it still won't be enough against the coming rains, unfortunately. However, since they've been pumpimg more water out this whole time, as well as having blocked two previous inflows, perhaps things are a bit better for getting them all out now.

I don't think they will announce the rescue in advance. Too much can go wrong . I think the first we'll know is when one of the boys comes out.

That's what I fear. Hallucinations. Yet it is worth investigating. If the boys really could hear they need to take turns making noise.

I was thinking audio hallucinations too - but then again maybe not, if all of them heard the same sounds at the same time...?

Exactly. I was just thinking, for the past 5 days or so they had been saying water levels were dropping by 1cm/hour. That would be roughly 1.20m, about 4 ft. And there wasn't much rain in the past few days, plus they were able to block some inflow ... so maybe conditions are less precarious right now and they decided, let's do it now before the rains start again.

Hypothetical question. Say the first boy gets out fine, but then on the second something goes wrong. You can get what I am saying. Do they continue to carry out extraction?

While we're waiting on Pins and Needles I thought you might
want to read about Full Face Masks for diving. Some even have
microphones for communicating with each other. These
masks are new to me also since I got certified for diving many years back in the Stone Age
and I don't think they were even available then.

Divers regularly communicate with hand signals. It is an easy transition to touch communication.

There are helmet devices with radio communication, but IIRC they are bulky. There may not be room.

I do think the divers can get the boys out, but it is dangerous. I am praying for them.

The rescuers will do the best they can for all the victims. Some may be weaker and not as healthy overall. I'd think it's like
during a fire, not all victims make it out alive but the firefighters
keep trying even if some don't make it.

Interesting article, thank you. It would be wonderful if they had verbal communication. I think it would be more reassuring that simple touch.

Another advantage ~ the full face masks would keep water off the boy's faces. New divers often feel claustrophobic with water on their faces, never mind dirty dark water.

Well this morning (Thailand time) authorities said there will be no rescue attempt today.

"Narongsak Osottanakorn, the governor of Chiang Rai province, has announced that no rescue attempt will be made today but the weather is perfect for a rescue attempt this week, so preparations will continue."

So many variables... if they lose one of the boys, I think they will continue. If the boy and both divers are lost, i think they would stop and reassess before putting any more rescuers in danger.
If something goes wrong in in one of the really narrow spots, ugh... it could block the passage...

This is heartlifting and brings tears to my eyes thinking of the courage and incredible compassion of those who are risking their lives to save these precious boys.

Everyone involved in this rescue mission, regardless of their role, is magnificent.
