A simple wellbeing check is all that is required, for all children not attending schools. Unannounced. You know like the TV licencing vans that drive around (or used to, I'm not sure if they still do that), they could have a mobile unit with a health visitor on board. The child would go into the unit, like a mini clinic, to be checked over, so no agreement of parents required to enter the home. The parents/carers would have a number to call to make sure it's a bona fide visit, or receive a list of registered health visitors from the local authority in advance.

Just for the health and wellbeing of the child, nothing else, like overseeing education. Perhaps linked up automatically with the family GP if they haven't had cause to see the child that year.

The problem is not home schooling per se, but children over whom welfare concerns have been raised being pulled out of school.

Schools are not social services, they are there to educate, and only get involved in safeguarding when there is evidence that a child is at risk. With the Duty of Care that any agency or group has when engaging with children.

It is (quite rightly) completely legal to home educate your child - it may be that there should be more checks and supervision on the quality / effectiveness of education a child receive in home education, since every child has a right to an education, but I can see issues over rights to say all home educated children must be monitored for abuse.

As parents we are free to not vaccinate, not take children for Milestone checks, and similar.

Rather than use resources to superficially monitor (let's be honest - it would be a tick box exercise) the thousands of parents who home educate as good and responsible parents, and focus resources properly, intensively and over a long period where there is a known cause for concern. As there has been in every child death of this sort that I have heard of.

I agree with you.

I'm just trying to brainstorm ideas which don't involve confusing the issue of home-education and personal choices, with checking on the welfare of 'hidden' children. But I do see your point, that history tells us that this always happens where concerns were already apparent.

Hidden isn't the right word, but I can't think of the right word right at this moment.

The children remain in the city of Jhelum, Pakistan, with their paternal grandfather, with efforts to return them to the UK still ongoing. Their identities are protected by a court order.

In a High Court order approved on Thursday, Mr Justice Williams ruled that information about ongoing and previous court proceedings relating to Sara and her siblings could be published, following applications from the PA news agency and several other media organisations.

This includes information about ongoing efforts by Surrey County Council to bring Sara’s siblings back to the UK following her death.

"Sara Sharif

‘was doing her best to be a child’ –

while suffering years of abuse.

At first glance, a home video that showed Sara Sharif dancing in front of the TV could have been filmed in any happy household.

But on closer inspection it was clear that a small chunk of the little girl’s finger was missing
and there was a deep scratch to her nose.

'It is heartbreaking to watch',
the prosecutor, William Emlyn Jones KC,
told jurors at the Old Bailey after they had been shown the footage.

'Beaten black and blue under those clothes,
with open burn wounds on her buttocks and ankles,
she was still doing her best to have fun,
still doing her best to be a child.
Moving a little awkwardly,
looking rather drawn and hollow-cheeked,
but alive at that time, just for a little longer'.”

Tbh the younger children at least I don't see why they could not remain in Pakistan with their family rather than going into care in this country. N is a different situation but hopefully he has a say in what happens to him next at his age.

Been a WS’er for many years.

I follow children’s cases and I understand how many cannot. I can deal with it or so I thought.

In all my years, this is the one I started following and had to back away.

Sara was such a beautiful child. Through all the torture and pain she still smiled. She still sang.

There is really no justice for Sara and no sentence is enough for what they did to this precious child.

And as far as the care workers are concerned, they should be fired. All of them. The Judge who awarded custody to Urfan should be disrobed.

RIP sweet Sara. People you never knew love and care about you.

From Parismatch

"On August 8,
Urfan Sharif had sent a message to a colleague, urgently asking him to buy him eight plane tickets to Islamabad.

Nadeem Riaz , the man in question, explained:
'He said he had to book and I asked why
and he said
his cousin had died in Pakistan.
He looked normal.
No different than usual.'

Asked whether Nadeem Riaz should also buy return tickets, his father replied tersely:
'One way'."

Always lying.
What about his promise to return to the UK as quickly as possible?

I just looked up Nadeem Riaz and found the following in a report by The Sun on 3 September 2023. It refers to Urfan Sharif.

The 41-year-old taxi driver reportedly contacted his pal Nadeem Riaz on August 8, in a desperate bid to secure the British Airways tickets.

Shop owner Nadeem, had known the fugitive for more than a decade, and often helped Urfan send money to relatives in Pakistan.

In other reports during this trial we have read that US was a gambler and had £17K of debts at this time, with credit cards being refused as Batool tried to book the plane tickets, which is why he was 'desperate'
We also learned that UF had bought Batool £7K's worth of gold bangles for her birthday (and she apparently did later accuse the Pakistani police of stealing her jewellery). He was financially supporting Batool and six children at the time.
So how and why did he 'often' send money to relatives in Pakistan?' and who were the relatives?
Did they perhaps have reason to help to hide him?
and perhaps then to persuade him to return when things got too hot?

I've no idea how he was paying for all that. I see a lot of adverts around for sending money back home/abroad to family. It must be the done thing but must be hard sometimes with the cost of housing here and cost of living when supporting your own family. Obviously I don't care about US. Just thinking of other families who do this.

Sara Sharif’s evil stepmother has struck up a prison friendship with fellow child killer Lucy Letby.

A source told how Beinash Batool, 30, spends hours chatting and playing cards with the 34-year-old nurse. They became pals after Batool was placed on remand at the same secure wing where serial baby murderer Letby is being held for her own protection

Birds of a feather...

I'm really surprised that LLetby wouldn't be locked down in maximum security, and can mingle with women who haven't been sentenced yet.

To be honest, I doubt it's true.

I presume that Beinash had to be in a seclusion wing rather than in a remand wing due to the fear of her being attacked.

The evil killer stepmother of Sara Sharif has reportedly struck up a prison friendship with serial baby murderer Lucy Letby as the pair 'get on so well' in their comfy jail ward.

Both are currently being held at HMP Bronzefield in Surrey and can be seen 'playing cards' on most days and 'chatting', a source has claimed.

Britain's youngest female murderer Sharon Carr - found guilty aged 12 of knifing an 18-year-old to death in 1992 - has also apparently become pals with Batool.

And completing the friendship group is convicted murderer Michelle Smith who poisoned her six-month-old daughter Amy with adult painkillers in Swansea in 2007.

The source at the Category A jail near Ashford told the Mirror: 'Beinash and Lucy live on the same wing with all the other lifers. They hang out on the landing together most days, playing cards and chatting.

'The child killers always stick together because they want to protect themselves, so it doesn't surprise me in the least that they get along so well.

'Beinash is also friends with Michelle and Sharon. They all live in house block four which is a really nice wing.

'They have privileges like their own room with an en suite shower, bigger beds and access to a private courtyard. It's like you're wrapped in cotton wool so there's no risk of being attacked or anything like that.'

I can’t tell you how happy I am with the verdict. I stand for prison reform, but in this case, I hope that both Urfan Sharif and Beinash Batool never see the light of day.

Sara's siblings, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have been made wards of the court meaning they cannot be removed from England or Wales without approval.

But an application by Surrey county council to the High Court in Lahore to bring the children back to the UK is now being fought by their grandfather.

The Sunday Times reports that Muhammad, a former army officer and father of seven, is optimistic he will win his case.

He claimed: 'My five grandchildren reside with me in Jhelum at my family home. The children have not inquired about their parents and are happy living with us.

The legal proceedings concerning the custody of the children are ongoing in the Lahore High Court. They are enrolled in a reputable school, and we ensure their safety by personally transporting them to and from school.

'I am their guardian and this is the safest place for them to live in, they have an association with me and they are not willing to leave me. We will win the case.'
