Everyone already has the ability to improve their own situation in some way. Even a small way is a step in the right direction. As far as providing help, I think the system is overwhelmed with people who "can't" get out because they don't want to do the hard work. Obviously that makes help harder to come by for those that need a little help to get out. I'll be totally honest, I think there is too much help available to the wrong people. Able bodied people should NOT be spending years ( or lifetimes) collecting assistance without working.
I guess I just don't understand how so many people can have so many excuses.
People need to step up and accept responsibility for themselves.

ETA: there used to be a stigma attached to getting assistance, now it is an accepted thing. Something isn't right about that. IMHO

Lets try this story...
Girl growing up gets her first PT job at same place mom works in order to help family out. Girl is straight A student.

The job is weekends only at first. Mom starts bringing girl on some week days to fill in for people.

Girl starts missing so much school eventually she stops going. She is now 16 and working full time.

Girl gets pregnant, has baby at 19. Her mom is no longer working but dad lives with them and works at a steady job. Girl gets government assistance for 3 months to cover birth and loss of work.

Girl gets new job, gam takes care of baby during girls working hours.

Girl no longer dates, instead spends her time taking care of baby.

Girl switches jobs a few times. Each time girl learns new things that enable her to get the next ( slightly better job).

Girl DOESNT hang on streets, doesn't have more kids. By the time child starts kindergarten girl has a better job. She has medical care. Still doesn't have a car though. She takes the bus to work, brings whatever she can dig up for lunch . Girl pays neighborhood teen to watch child after school.

Girl now has to work an additional two late evenings to keep her job. More money spent on sitter. Too late for the bus. Girl takes cab home on the two late nights.

Girl always keeps an eye out for new jobs, better chances, etc. girl finds opportunity to move to new area. Studio apt but she makes it work. Finds job a few blocks away at a bank. Works there for a few years. Walks a fair distance to the supermarket several times a week. People in this area aren't struggling like girl. She needs to fit in in order to keep moving up, and have her child accepted.
Girl shops at goodwill for clothes, hand washing them and hanging in the shower to dry. It's hard work but she does it anyway.

Girl finds a different job, data entry. She knows nothing about computers but knows the owner from working at the bank. She takes job and learns everything she can.

Girl meets someone, eventually moving herself and child in with him. He owns a house. After a short time he becomes controlling and abusive. Girl and child sometimes sleep in car in random parking lot to avoid him. Girl still goes to work everyday , child still goes to school everyday.

Girl is back to working a low income , retail job for a while. Once again walking a longer distance to work. Girl switches job. Girl is able to meet people from other nearby businesses. Girl finally gets her first car at 26 .Girl gets new job working for a large, well known company. It's data entry. Girl is nervous but tries hard not to show it. She works hard, very hard.
Girl pays attention to what/ how others do their jobs. She learns more than she has to. Girl brings home discarded computer programming books, studying late at night. People at work start noticing girl knows things beside her job. She continues to study the computer books at home. She finds an old computer set for the trash. She takes it home, using all she has learned from the discarded books girl teaches herself some programming. Meanwhile, girl has received a few smal raises at work. She is given more responsibility. She shows she can write some programs for her little dept at work.
It takes a year's but girl ends up a dept head at said company. Her child graduates high school even though she has learning disabilities. Mom and child worked hard at it. They studied together!

It's a lot of very , very, hard work, but it can be done. I'm proof of that. I am that girl.
I am late, very late to this thread due to summer schedule, but I wanted to say Bravo to you. You have my utmost respect. So many times during your struggle you could have just quit and no one would have blamed you. You are amazing. Your child hit that jackpot with you as a mom.

My dad was pulled out of work in the 6th grade go work on an ice truck with my granddad. They had 9 kids in a one bedroom in New York city. Dirt poor. My dad drove a delivery truck as I was growing up, mom finished high school (the child of an immigrant house cleaner and who's dad was a drunk). Dad became Generally manager of a trucking company, Mom went back to school and retired a bank vice president. They grew up in rough neighborhoods.
There are people that want to succeed, then there are those who wrongly use excuses to hold themselves back.

( sorry to stick my story in there)It was your story that had me say Wow!!

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...e-police-shooting-video-speculation/88938532/

The department’s Taser Axon Flex cameras run in “standby mode” and have a 30-second pre-buffer, meaning once an officer hits record, the previous 30 seconds of video become part of that recording — though those don’t have sound. The department chose that brand after testing four manufacturers’ devices during a 2013 pilot program.
Milwaukee police officers do not use chest-mounted cameras, because officials here wanted a recording similar to an officer’s line of sight. Officers can wear the cameras by using clear glasses or sunglasses, a metal band under the shirt collar, a headphone-like band that wraps around the back of the head or a vest mount at shoulder-level.

That full video of the sister is disgusting. I would love to ask Me. Smiths sister why they should take the burning and rioting to the suburbs. How does that even factor into any of these things? I don't see how she can blame anyone but her brother for his possession of a gun that was stolen and pointing it at an officer. I also find it bizarre how many cases of his were dropped by the prosecution. I don't think I have ever seen THAT many different charges dropped.

Also, Sugarqueen and ninij9, I love stories like yours. Mine is similar. It can be done. It reminds me of a story that I think about often. A young boy sees a man with a nice car, nice watch, nice suit...he approaches the man and says he wants to be successful like him and asks him what he has to do. The man takes the boy to the beach, swims way out past the waves, the boy protesting he can't swim. The man then let's go of the boy, who promptly goes under. The man watches, and waits and waits, until the very last moment and pulls the boy to the surface. He tells the boy to be successful, you have to want it as bad as you wanted to breath just before I pulled you up. You have to need it as bad as air. When it becomes a need, not a want, it will happen.

Are we 100% sure he was pointing the gun at the officer? Or is that an assumption on your part?

He was apparently shot in the chest. So he was facing the officer. And he reportedly had the gun. He was running away and then turned around and faced the cop.

It has been said that the officer ordered him to drop the weapon. I am not sure if there is evidence of that or not.

I thought that is what I had read, my mistake. But take "point it at the officer" out and insert "fled the scene and failed to listen to officer commands while in possession of a stolen firearm" and everything still stands. What do the suburbs have to do with? What type of person would tell people who are actively burning and rioting to go to the suburbs and do that? A racist one I think.

I have seen no claim made by the police that he was pointing the gun at anyone.

I disagree that everything would still stand. Fleeing and disobeying an officer are not grounds for lethal force. Not even close. Not even in North Korea or Nazi Germany.
If this officers life or the life of another was under immediate threat I see no problem with this officer using lethal force. Time will tell.

the claim from people that have seen the video is that he ignored orders to drop the gun and then turned and started to raise the gun when he was shot.

"After reviewing the shooting footage, Milwaukee Chief Edward Flynn said, “The individual did turn toward the officer with a firearm in his hand.” Chief Flynn added that Smith was “raising up with” the gun at the time that he was shot by the officer."

My understanding from MSM articles is that he was running with the gun in his hand. He turned toward the officer with the gun in his hand. He was shot in the arm and chest.
Taking that information my speculation is that since he was running his arms would be bent. Turning so that his chest was to the officer would of also have his hand turning toward the officer. He wasn't shot in the side as he was shot in the chest. Hands in the running position and chest toward the officer, and less than a second he could of pulled the trigger and killed the officer. IMO if the officer had a waited a second longer the officer would be dead.

bbm, That's a stretch. If it happened in either one of those places, nazi germany then and north korea now I would put my money on we would never even have heard about it. We don't know what he was doing with the gun he had in his hand which was stolen, but considering that the suspect was shot in his chest and arm. That tells me the suspect was facing the officer with a gun that had a 30 round mag. What would you do as a police officer when a suspect flees his vehicle and runs with a weapon then is turned and facing you, (it appears) being shot in the chest. jmo idk I know what I would have done, I too would be on desk duty. jmo

An autopsy conducted Monday showed Sylville Smith was shot in his chest and arm, authorities said, backing up the official account of Saturday's shooting of a black man by a Milwaukee police officer.

I thought I read something further about the gun! I think if this officer wouldn't have shot him he would have been shot himself. I was wondering, is there not some sort of crime about inciting riots or telling people to attack specific areas? I am seriously in disbelief his sister would rant like that. I'm not in disbelief that many msm sources chose to edit it the way they did however.

The sister's rant will be excused under the whole 'been oppressed for so long' line of stuff and not just by the MSM...
