‘Killer nanny’ seemed sane before slaughter: ex-clients

"...Ortega, who is mounting an insanity defense, claims that in the months proceeding the bathtub slayings, she suffered hallucinations, felt the devil’s touch on her skin and saw “giants fighting.”

Yet under vigorous questioning Tuesday by both the prosecution and the defense, both women said Ortega, while a bit terse, acted normally and showed no signs of delusion that “the devil was penetrating her body,” as the nanny’s lawyer, Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg, has said....

Heron, whose own daughter is still friends with the Krim’s surviving middle daughter, was crying before she even took the stand.

Prosecutor Stuart Silberg asked if Ortega was ever late or skipped out on any job or whether the pair had any disagreements: Heron responded “no” to all.

“You didn’t experience anything that would lead you to believe the defendant was experiencing any mental illness?” he asked Heron.

“No,” Heron responded.

The other mom, Melanie Kapadia, said Ortega worked for her for a day just weeks before the murder, then arrived on her doorstep the next morning and claimed it was too much work. Ortega brought along a replacement — a woman whom the bedridden Fox Business journalist had never met — to do the job instead.

Kapadia said the interaction weirded her out but otherwise, Ortega never behaved “bizarrely.”

“She was never rude,” the mom said. But “she was not happy to be in my home. She was getting paid more to work for Marina.”

Three days before the murders, Ortega saw a psychologist. But she never mentioned the supernatural hallucinations. Instead, she discussed feeling anxious and overworked, with the doctor testifying last week she seemed nervous and depressed...."

Father of kids slain by ‘killer nanny’ gives heartbreaking testimony

"The broken dad of the two little kids allegedly butchered by their Upper West Side nanny fought back tears in court Tuesday as he recalled seeing their tiny bodies at the hospital — and having to say goodbye....

“I got down on my knees, and I said, ‘I’m sorry.’ I said, ‘I love you,’ and I kissed them, and I said goodbye.”

Jurors openly wept at the father’s heartbreaking testimony, with one woman having to use the neck of her sweater to halt the 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 of tears streaming down her face.

Krim, 42, told the packed Manhattan courtroom how he first learned of his babies’ murders...

The dad then turned in the courtroom to glare at Ortega, who during Krim’s entire testimony, as she did with Marina’s, stared straight ahead and avoided eye contact.
He said Tuesday was his first time laying eyes on Ortega since she allegedly killed his children...."

Looking at Yoselyn Ortega, I am more thinking this woman could a psychopath. Not flagrantly psychopath like Adolf Hitler or Eric Harris.

She is someone is very obsessed about social status, like Betty Broderick, Lori Drew, Jodi Arias, and Dora Cisneros.

Nanny had breathing tube in windpipe and couldn't speak after allegedly killing 2 kids: surgeon

"The defense began the indefensible Thursday in the case of a Manhattan nanny accused of murdering two kids under her care, suggesting to a jury that she was in no physical or mental state to clue cops in on a motive.

Prosecutors have made the case that after Yoselyn Ortega allegedly killed 6-year-old Lulu and 2-year-old Leo Krim in their Upper West Side home Oct. 25, 2012, she told cops she stabbed the siblings to death because she was overworked.

But a lawyer for Ortega, 55, focused on the day the former babysitter met with detectives from her hospital bed — while still intubated and unable to speak — and allegedly complained about her employer and her job duties.

A critical care surgeon who treated Ortega at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center testified that she couldn't speak with a tube in her windpipe....

But on cross-examination, Assistant DA Courtney Groves established that the medical records showed Ortega could move her hands after getting a cervical traction procedure.

Ortega communicated with Sgt. Yoel Hidalgo in Spanish using an alphabet chart to point to letters, the cop has said...

Ortega has rarely looked at witnesses or the jury, but appeared very interested when the panel looked at a photo of her at the hospital...."

Defense in Nanny Case Highlights Her Condition After Killings
Yoselyn Ortega had neck surgery, was unable to answer questions and was given potent medications, doctor testified

"Defense attorneys representing the New York City nanny charged with murder began presenting their case Thursday, reconstructing the days after the woman fatally stabbed her two young charges on Oct. 25, 2012....

Throughout Thursday’s testimony, defense attorney Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg highlighted Ms. Ortega’s mental state, her prolonged unconsciousness and the potent medications she was given in the hospital, including after doctors operated on her....

Doctors operated on Ms. Ortega’s neck shortly after she arrived at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center on the evening of Oct. 25, 2012. They later learned she had collapsed, bruising an artery and breaking her neck, said Philip Barie, a surgeon who served as the defense’s first witness....

Ms. Van Leer-Greenberg placed a photo of Ms. Ortega on the courtroom projector. The ex-nanny’s eyes were closed, with frizzy hair splayed around her head. A breathing tube and other medical devices surrounded her neck and face.

In the courtroom, Ms. Ortega, sitting with her hair slicked back neatly into a ponytail, stared at the photo without visible emotion.

Ms. Van Leer-Greenberg repeatedly asked about the medications Ms. Ortega received in the hospital, requesting the doctor explain each one.

“Fentanyl is a very powerful opioid, chemically similar to, but about 100 times more potent than, morphine,” Dr. Barie said, adding that it was a standard drug used in general anesthesia.

The lawyer asked the surgeon to explain a note on a medical record from Oct. 27, 2012, saying hospital staff would determine her immediate care.

“They were saying we think this patient is not going to be able to make decisions for herself for longer than we can wait,” Dr. Barie said."

Nanny accused of slaying two kids finally sheds tears at trial — when doctor details her sadness after the killings

"The monster finally melted.

An Upper West Side nanny who butchered two children under her watch in 2012 before sticking a kitchen knife into her own throat finally displayed a trace of humanity at her first-degree murder trial Friday but only when the topic turned to her own sadness.

Yoselyn Ortega, 55, broke down in tears and turned away from the jury when a hospital shrink witness discussed Ortega’s complaints about life from an interview he did with her a month after the Oct. 25, 2012, slayings.

Throughout weeks of agonizing testimony about the horrible ends that little Lulu and Leo Krim, 6 and 2, met in a bathroom inside their family's W. 75th St. apartment when Ortega stabbed and slashed them repeatedly, their former babysitter of two years hasn't so much as winced.

But her coldness briefly faded toward the end of direct-examination by New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center psychiatrist Marc Dubin, who was called as a witness by Ortega's lawyers...."

For the First Time, the Nanny Cries at her Murder Trial

"Yoselyn Ortega cried in court today....

on Friday, during a break in testimony from a psychiatrist who treated the nanny after the crime, was the only time I have seen Yoselyn Ortega cry.

The moment was brief. The jury was out on a break and Dr. Marc Dubin was still in the witness stand, waiting. The defendant’s face crumpled and tears began to slide down her face. With both hands, she wiped away tears, lifting her eyeglasses. Defense attorney Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg leaned over Ortega, speaking in comforting tones. I heard the phrase “nice man,” but then the jury came back and the moment ended. Van Leer-Greenberg sat down; Ortega composed herself. The trial resumed and the murder defendant returned to staring straight ahead, in silence...."

Nanny was 'collapsing into crying fits and bizarrely stabbing at food' in the weeks before she brutally 'butchered two children' in their New York apartment

"A friend of the New York nanny accused of killing two children says the woman had been collapsing into crying fits and stabbing at her food in the weeks leading up to the gruesome murders.

Raquel Perez testified at the trial of Yoselyn Ortega on Monday, describing to jurors how her former friend had been acting oddly prior to the stabbing frenzy in October 2012.

She said Ortega, 55, once collapsed on the couch sobbing and she would cry regularly when they met up various times in September and October.

Perez said on one occasion she made Ortega a plate of food after she started crying but the nanny started repeatedly stabbing at it with her knife and court.

'I asked her what was wrong, why she was crying,' Perez said with the help of a Spanish interpreter, the New York Post reported.

'She told me "nothing".'..."

‘Killer nanny’ sister blames parents for own kids’ murders..:sheesh:

"he parents are to blame.

That’s the outrageous claim of accused killer Yoslyn Ortega’s older sister, who took the stand Monday to say Marina and Kevin Krim should have noticed something was off about their nanny and given her some time off — to prevent her from slaughtering their little kids, Lucia, 6 and Leo, 2, with a kitchen knife.

“Why didn’t those parents realize and take her out themselves — they were seeing it,” Miladys Garcia said defiantly when asked by a Manhattan prosecutor why she didn’t do more following a troubling phone conversation with her sister on Oct. 25, 2012, the day of the gruesome murder in the Krims’ Upper West Side home.

Dad Kevin Krim, who sat in the courtroom gallery, shut his eyes and bowed his head upon hearing the shocking statement. Marina Krim was not present...."

Upper West Side nanny was ‘very sad’ before 2012 slaying of two children, friend testifies

"The father of two young children slain by their Upper West Side nanny glared at the babysitter’s friend as she testified Monday how “very sad” the accused killer was prior to the 2012 slaughter....

“She cried, but gently,” Raquel Perez, 40, testified through an interpreter.

“Did she ever tell you why?” asked Ortega’s lawyer, Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg.

“Yes I would ask her. She would tell me ‘no.’ She wouldn't tell me anything,” Perez testified....

“I can only say she was very sad and she cried a lot,” she added in answer ADA Courtney Grove’s query if Ortega ever said she heard voices commanding her to hurt people.

Groves suggested Monday that Ortega’s stress and melancholy were caused by her teenage son’s move from the Dominican Republic to live with her...."

Thank you YESorNO for the updates.

This Ortega woman is gross and it's hard to look at her and/or read about her responses. I have absolutely no sadness for her at all. That would otherwise scare me lol, as I try to see all sides and be a "jurorist" with an open mind till the end. But this Ortega "nanny" has no redeeming qualities or values. I wish NY had the DP just so she could rot in a cell for the next 20+ years with no contact whatsoever 23 hrs. a day while awaiting death. She is not mentally ill, no way shape or form. She's a sad, jealous, bitter 🤬🤬🤬, but that's not mental illness.

Her lawyer is a disgusting hag, who obviously does NOT sleep, or she would have better hygiene (my God you're in a court of law, for crying out loud -- dress the part respectfully) and would have better advised her client AGAINST this ridiculous trial that does nothing but waste the court's time and further victimize the parents.

wyome....please tell me how you really feel.....:hilarious:

I feel the same way- she's not mentally ill- just a jealous, truly evil, miserable, selfish, vindictive and dangerous person and like HMSHood stated- a debt collector (and the poor Krim children happen to be handy..:(..).

She destroyed multiple lives and it's ALL about her.. There is no empathy. No regret. No remorse. No apologies.

I don't know why I don't feel any sympathy for this woman (God forgive me)

These sisters have a tough story to put across - it wasn't Yoselyn's fault because she was clearly mentally incapacitated, yet they can't have been expected to alert anybody, because they couldn't have guessed she'd harm anyone/ the Krims should have guessed.

I cannot believe that she is insane or that she was hearing voices. She wanted to punish Marina for the crime of being Marina, and the punishment was to take away the children. I'm also convinced she rationalized this in some way, believing that Marina would be blamed for the deaths, and that Yoselyn would come across as another innocent victim.
Yes, I'm speculating here but from the beginning I have absolutely believed that Yoselyn had some convoluted plan that would see her financially compensated as Marina's victim. I think she was inspired by those stories where the person who stumbles onto the crime scene becomes the primary suspect... so she thought Marina would be blamed for the deaths of the children, and Yoselyn's injuries would look as if she was another surviving victim. When she was first questioned about the crimes she would say "Marina knows what happened."

However, the physical evidence was so overwhelming, and there were so many witnesses, because Marina called someone in to help her search the apartment. So I believe the real motive was overlooked.
I just get annoyed when people start talking about the "devil" and "hearing voices" because that's not how someone who was really hearing voices would phrase it!

Inside the bedroom where ‘killer nanny’ claims she lost her mind

"Jurors have now seen photos of the Hamilton Heights bedroom where the nanny accused of brutally slaughtering two tots in her care claims she descended into demonic possession.

The cramped room at 160 Riverside Drive was shown to jurors as Yoselyn Ortega’s older sister, Miladys Garcia, described their childhood in the Dominican Republic....

The tiny bedroom, which was projected for the courtroom for a matter of seconds, showed what appeared to be a single bed, neatly made and covered with a cobalt blue bedspread.

Blue drapes hang over the window, and a small mirror leans against the far wall next to a dresser.

Atop the dresser a Bible sits open, to a passage on the Immaculate Conception.

A business card for the psychologist Thomas Caffrey, whom she saw just days before the murders, sits in the open nearby on a TV stand. A clutter of bottles of lotion and other toiletries have been shoved underneath.

A trio of photos of unidentifiable saints lay visible on another table in the room.

Garcia, 64, testified Monday her sister paid just $200 a month for the cramped room, which was one of three bedrooms in the apartment she shared with her family...."

I'm not seeing anything related to mental illness here, rather I see an enormous amount of anger and resentment toward the Krims, which Ortega took out on the most vulnerable people in that apartment - the children. I can't believe the sister had the gall to blame the Krims when she claims she knew her sister was mentally ill and did absolutely nothing about it herself . That is sickening.
