We must be neighbors! I'm 30 minutes from chillicothe, 20 minutes from washington courthouse. 😊 And yes. The rhoden murders, the couple in Cincinnati, the women in chillicothe. I'm a transplant to Ohio--I never realized how much crime was here!

just read Shannon's case. Bumping for her as we approach 30 years. Wouldn't it be wonderful if this were the year. My heart goes out to her family.

excellent post regarding the differences in tyoes of empathy. I'm sorry if my posts seem rushed or pieced together. I have two kids and I am typing on my phone, so I don't have my thoughts as organized as Id like. Also, great point about the "outburst" of someone with autism. So many times...

I agree with you. I hope they stay together. I imagine that they will do all they can to make that possible in this case. And I'm in Ohio, too! Southeast, close to columbus. And Id take those kiddos in a heartbeat if my own two little ones weren't so much work!

I agree. So many factors go in to whether I feel a threat. I've actually started carrying a pocket knife with me and also in the side door of my car. Just in case. I've only had one scary time. I was in college and had parked to walk to campus. I saw a man approaching as I was in my car and...

Oh I hope I didn't imply anyone without empathy is a psychopath. Of course not!! But Id imagine it would still be something people would like "fixed." I would of it were me. Actually--let me find the article--but I read about someone with Aspergers (and I am in NO way equivocating that with...

Oh how interesting! And how sad. yoi might enjoy this NYT piece "can you call a nine-year-old a psychopath." Very interesting. http://mobile.nytimes.com/2012/05/13/magazine/can-you-call-a-9-year-old-a-psychopath.html Also, I think you made an excellent point about sicknesses being...

Maybe it's just me, but I'm 33 and, if I had to choose an "unsafe" age group of men, it'd be 25-45. I'm going to get a little Freudian and say this is because I had an older father (he was 42 when I was born) and he had the kindest heart, so maybe I'm biased in my generalization. Of course so...

It's a small number of the general population, but quite high for the criminal population. And I agree with everything you said. We just don't know enough. Yet. But it gives me a peace of mind to not view things as evil. But rather things that are beyond our current understanding and control...

Yes. A million times, yes! Thank you. I think we try to make sense of the senseless, which is impossible, especially as (mostly) rational humans. But these people who commit these acts are sick. Very, very sick. A normal brain/person has empathy. It's the foundation for our social selves. And...

It breaks my heart that in the world in which we live, you must be so cautious as to not offer me a drink, and me so cautious not to take one.

I understand what you're saying, but perhaps a new start would do them well. Perhaps specialized placement with a family more equipped to deal with psychological trauma. I think it may be harder in the short term but better in the long run.

And a previous article mentioned that cps wouldn't allow the kids to be placed with the maternal grandparents bc of prior involvement.

Yes. This is one of the most heart breaking stories I've ever heard. Women (and men) stay in violent and abusive relationships for many reasons. A lack of resources, lack of support, lack of shelter, lack of child care/employment. Those are just the quantifiable factors, not to mention the...

I agree so much with your post. Thanks so much for humanizing some things that make them hard to humanize. Effectively understanding and treating mental illnesses is the key to preventing so many crimes. Until society makes this connection, I'm afraid "treatment" will remain reactionary and...

I am so sorry for the loss of your child, jillycat. I cannot imagine. I agree so much with your post. With so many of these cases, I have had that same thought regarding the hope that they were able to fight back along with the wish that she didn't have to know or suffer. I've struggled with...

Was it stated whether or not sierah was found clothed? Or if she had injuries beyond the chipped tooth? I'm sorry if this has been discussed--I try to read each post but it's hard to keep up sometimes!

Do you have a link to the article or an abstract? I love a good academic paper about interesting stuff.
