The Japanese antique store was called Bizen "focusing on beautiful Japanese antiques and homewares". I wonder if it was frequented by AH.
I was just thinking back to when he told his GC neighbour that he worked in the La Tour d'Argent ........

I am wondering if it was MORE like the fact that he MAY have known a French Restaurant that was also in the exact same place as that Japanese Antique store that closed down in 1997

All these 'coincidences' in his own neck of the woods....

Janot La Frite, owned by a respectable Frenchman, which was opened in the late 1970s

The directory for 132 French Restaurants across Australia right there in his FAVOURITE NEWSPAPER !

Here's a lovely writeup about it from 2019

The author talks about how he went out to FEDERAL where the Frenchman cooked him a lovely BBQ

2019 - writeup
It was ONLY the year before that MdeH was photographed at the Casino Beef Week where they celebrated Charolais Beef - her MOVING from Bondi to Federal

Now WHAT are the chances of AH knowing this Frenchman and the Restaurant eh?

What is ringing in my ears about all this is AC comment - the JAL flights "came to a screeching halt" in 1997

I found a great little video by Documentary filmmaker Terry Bleakley, about what Byron Bay area was like 20 / 30 years ago

He interviews former Bangalow Chamber of Commerce president Tony Jones - who just so happened to own a Japanese Antique Business until he closed it in 1997

There is quite a fascinating article on a property where Tony had his business and other very interesting business people..... Banglaow, Federal, Byron Bay all such interesting places
An article from The Australian Jewish News (Melbourne,Vic.:1935-1999) page 10.

"Japanese furniture bought in Korea is cheaper by as much as 25 percent"

Hopefully journalists on here and / or any authorities are looking deeper into all of this!

The timeline of RLW falls precisely into all of these stories.

The vicinities are his stomping grounds, he is drawn to anything French including people, loves getting his information from Le Courrier, his daughter lived in the very area and same era that Jacques moved to, AH flys JAL for the duration of TJ having his shop buying antiques from Japan and closes it at the very time AH stops flying JAL

Thats far too many "coincidences " right at his doorstep IMO !

NOT suggesting for a minute any of these people are involved with AH. IMO here are more victims for his ruthless crimes!

This is the link to The Byron Shire Echo (25 November 2020). The article is on page 22 that mentions a Japanese antiques and homewares business.

@mishy66 posted (#318) that it closed in 1997.

A couple of things jump right off the page.. coin boxes, probably filled with other people's coins and medicine chests filled with other people's treasures, packed by the greedy one promising a new life in Australia. Shipped quickly to a ready outlet. And rather than 25% discount, they are free to the knight in shining armour who becomes the nightmare in shining armour overnight.

Great video of Bangalow! A real cast of characters and insight into the community. Thanks for sharing.

1997 - the Japanese antique store closes and AHA never again travels with JAL. Coincidences follow AHA around like a lost puppy...

I wondered who might be paying for the overseas shipping! (AKA has others pay.) Makes sense he had a ready buyer who probably had no idea where things were coming from. Could have been any dealer in Australia for that matter.
100%
No way in the world he has paid to freight goods from one country to the other.

Far too many "coincidences" in this one - IMO

That shop opens in 1992 - right in AH stomping ground
Everything aligns to AH goings on during those years - including his new alias of RWL

The deH family return from Tasmania 1992 - around February / March
2 Oct 1992 Fernand Nocolas Remakel QLD License renewed - expires 1997

Travelling on a false passport - Richard Lloyd Westbury - Passport number 6
This is the SAME year - 1992 - he officially changed his name to FdeH

He made 10 trips from 1992 to 1997 under RLW -
Then in 1997 - the same year Marion goes missing - he changes his name to FdeH in the local Northern Rivers Phone Directory – the phone directory was produced in for the following year……...1998

I'm not sure I understand the link between him flying through Japan to Europe and Japanese antiques?

From what I understand he could have been purchasing Japanese antiques, filling them with stolen goods from his European scams, and transporting them back to Australia where he sold the antiques to a T. Jones, owner of the antiques store in Bangalow.
Edit to add: And he might have been a paid buyer for the store which had an account with JAL

I wonder what was in that truck during their time in rural & secluded Burwash back in the mid 1980s? Going back and forward across the channel every week. And when a neighbour reported their suspicious activity they hot-footed it out of the UK.

Surely some of his known associates or perhaps someone even closer to him could enlighten us further?

Certainly looks like he was up to his old tricks again in the 1990s. JMO.

Leopard never changes its spots as you know @Lord Peter Flimsy
He knew the drill didn't he.
He just needs an in, and the Bangalow shop provided it IMO, JMO MOO

It’s MCs prerogative if she doesn’t want to divulge everything she knows about Aka. She might have done away from the inquest. It’s such a shame she didn’t appear at the inquest because that might have unnerved him and stopped his pathetically poor attempt at a stammer. JMO but I believe she knows an awful lot more than she has let on in her interviews.
Something about the way Joni speaks about MC makes me think there is more known behind the scenes. Hopefully it will come out after the coroners delivers her findings.

He may also have found victims with Japanese antiques and helped the victim pack the treasures into crates, that the victims pay to transport, supposedly to their new life across the other side of the world. He may also use the luggage/ cases of victims that he encourages them to store at airports and train stations that are never recovered by the victims, to send things around the world. MOO

I wonder if they were genuine antiques. A lot of money in forgeries and fakes and far more around than admitted to.

Speculation: 1997 - forgers and/or suppliers apprehended by authorities in Japan. AH (who is a middle man) swiftly distances himself from any connection & avoids Japan thereafter. Might even have his name/photo flagged.

Not implicating the actual store owner in any of this, but loss of supply could have caused the store to close.
