Three counties west .....?
I live on the edge of Cattaraugus County (next to Allegany County) and drive to Buffalo every day to work. So not that far. I live only 90 minutes from Cuba. If they go north they can be in Buffalo in a couple hours. Rte 16.

I was just correcting where the other fugitive is from, and saying Steuben county is 3 counties west of Broome county. Sweat is from Broome county.

PS thank you I was just wondering how far to Buffalo!

just a quick reminder that scanner chat stays in the basement. You may link to the scanner threads so others can find them but please do not discuss what is being heard on the scanner in this general discussion thread. Thank you :)

They're almost to Tonawanda. Where Matt went every other time he broke out. IMO anyway. Allegany is awfully close to Erie.

Matt spent time in Allegany a previous time he fled.

“He jumped on a freight train, went to his brother’s house in Tonawanda, and that’s where we captured him,” Bentley recalled.

When he was around 13, Matt also escaped from a group home where he had been sent for stealing a houseboat, sources said.

He fled into the nearby Allegany State Park, where he stole food and supplies from vacation homes, the sources said.

The guest on CNN says it is better to use heat seeking equipment as it gets darker out, they can see the people better as the ground cools but the body heat stays the same. I know someone was asking yesterday, and this was the reply someone else gave. They were correct.

(oh also, route 17 = interstate 86 = the southern tier expressway)

There is a small rail line that moves along the expressway through Salamanca (Indian Reservation) and then through some small towns east. GGE, is that connected to your map? I am not sure how often the train moves - but someone in Randolph had some of his cows killed recently - because the train goes through his farm ...

@Tom_Winter: Press release from New York State Police now says this is an "unconfirmed sighting" of the escapees. Told our desk it was "confirmed" at 5pm

Thank you all for the updates. I just checked in, really haven't posted much on this thread but have been reading. It's time for these dudes to be caught. If this is them the next few hours are critical, they may become even more desperate knowing that the heat is on them. Stay safe locals!

It's just that these rural counties aren't that far from each other and on the expressway you can move fast.
If they go north they can go to Letchworth State Park, or if they keep going east toward Olean - they can escape in Allegany State Park - it borders PA. They have a lot of options for hiding out. You can read about Ralph Bucky Phillips. He alluded police for at least 4 months. NY, PA ... it was bad.

I don't know but I wish I did! I will see if I can find out the name of that rail line and go from there.

State Police investigate possible sighting of escaped inmates in Allegany County

NEW YORK STATE POLICE
Joseph A. D'Amico
Superintendent

PRESS RELEASE

The New York State Police is investigating the possible sighting of two men in Allegany County who may fit the description of Clinton Correctional Facility escapees David Sweat and Richard Matt.

On the afternoon of June 20, a witness spotted two men along a railroad line that runs along Route 20 in the Town of Friendship.

State Police, U.S. Marshals, officers from the Department of Environmental Conservation, State Parks Police, Allegany County Sheriff's Department and other local law enforcement are currently searching an area along I-86 and Route 20 in the Town of Friendship. Aviation, canine and special operation teams are assisting in the search.

While this is an unconfirmed sighting, the State Police is asking residents who live in this area along the New York-Pennsylvania border to be on alert. If these men are spotted, please call 911 immediately. Do not approach, as both are considered to be very dangerous.

Media in the area are asked to stage outside SP Amity. SP Amity is located at 5591 State Route 19, Belmont, NY.

If anyone has any other information regarding the escape, please call 1-800-GIVETIP. New York State is offering a reward of $50,000 for information that leads to the capture of either suspect ($100,000 for both). The U.S. Marshals Service has placed Sweat and Matt on their 15 Most Wanted Fugitives List, and is also offering a $25,000 reward for information that leads to the capture of either suspect.

"Salamanca NY the greatest railroad town you never heard of -

<snip>

..three class 1 RR's had stations here, the B&O[BR&P], Erie, and Pennsy, and two had fairly large classification yards here. There are three brick stations still remaining here, and two Railroads still come through with freight every day.

<snip>

the BR&P East Salamanca station [is] now used by the Buffalo and Pittsburgh RR

<snip>

"The Pennsy followed the Allegheny River on the south side from Olean NY to Oil City Pa on the Salamanca branch. This branch was abandoned in 1963"

Sounds like it's pretty likely to be the Buffalo and Pittsburgh RR.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_and_Pittsburgh_Railroad

"Its main line runs between Buffalo, New York and Eidenau, Pennsylvania, north of Pittsburgh. Here, connections are made to the city center via the Allegheny Valley Railroad. The system runs largely on former Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) lines"

"The Buffalo-Eidenau main line passes through Salamanca, NY, Bradford, PA, Johnsonburg, PA, DuBois, PA, Punxsutawney, PA, and Butler, PA. Principal rail yards are located at Butler, Punxsutawney (Riker), and Buffalo, with support yards for local industry at other locations."

I see the general reference "to Buffalo" on there... which originates at Gang Mills. Where they may have been sighted June 13. But this map doesn't specifically follow the lines everywhere, this page was for Binghamton specifically. I'll see what else I can dig up from this www.railfanguides.us website if anything.

ETA - here we go, anyone can check through this who feels like it. I want to check on some other things on my mind about this case. :)

There's a large chunk of pages devoted to Buffalo. The one that says DePew is right outside Buffalo and should be considered relevant IMHUninformedO.

People keep saying they likely would have split up or been caught.
People keep saying they can't believe it's been two weeks and they haven't been found.
Since the escape DH has taken a bit more of an interest in prison escapes.

We watched one last night about the Texas Seven.
This group subdued many officers and stole a vehicle to escape.
They had only a few minutes head start in a vehicle before their captive guards alerted LE.
They had no inside help and their escape was known as it happened.
The manhunt began immediately and it was for SEVEN of them.

Despite that, they stayed on the run for 39 DAYS... even after killing a cop on DAY 11.
They all stayed together and it still took that long to find them.
They did the opposite of what everyone expected they would do as far as where they went.

Just thought I'd point it out because it was rather surprising to me. :twocents:

Here is the documentary if anyone wants to watch it:

Did all 7 stay together?

Believe it or not I'm avoiding the basement due to possible spoilers. :giggle:

Did all 7 stay together?

YES all seven stayed together.
They were living in an RV when they were found.
3 went to a gas station and 2 went to get supplies.
However, they were STAYING together, yes. :twocents:
