Southern Oregon University in Ashland was closed today after a note was found in campus building. Ashland is two hours south of Roseburg. Yesterday the Rogue Community College campuses in Grants Pass, Medford and White City were closed due to a threat (story linked upthread yesterday).

Ashland police Deputy Chief Warren Hensman declined to discuss the note's contents because of the ongoing investigation, but said the note was clearly a message of violence against the campus.

SOU officials say their Ashland campus will reopen Thursday at 5 a.m. The decision to close campus on Wednesday was in response to a threatening communication that officials received Tuesday evening.
Law enforcement officials say there was no further evidence found to substantiate the threat.

If we think about it what is the def of terorisim , making a culture willing to alter normative activites. It does not have to be a bomb.

Since this there have been at least two the one in this post and the one yesterday. I fear we are going to get into just 13 year olds posting meaningless threats. As this cr@p continues authorities aare gonna feel like forced to "respond " to this stuff.

I am confident a bunch of 13-14 year old will find it quite amusing to watch a Unviersity close a campus lord.

And for me the irony of stumbling across JACOB APPELBAUM several days ago has certainly changed my notions about their capabllitties, to instnatly respond ( and I do mean instantly!) to posters who have these kind of posts

tthe media only hihglighted the dramatic stuff in this thing. I had a video on you tube (cant find) that had like 4 pages of screenshots on the entire "dialog" What I was trying to do was go back , after Jacob and get an idea of like howmany search words would "find these folks" The only word I remember when first viewing the entire exchange was how often everyone was calling each other fa@oots-- that was wildly used. HOw refreshing, here on WS you cant type it good news!

Also I just noticed that every box has a "report" button- pretty sad commentary that even the folks that were responding to intent no one hit report? If any of us read stuff like on a website I am confident most of us would click report!

Had 4chan been tamed by the harsh glare of the spotlight? Hardly. Today's changes were part of an inside joke designed to poke fun at the concerned parents that /b/ users guessed would flock to the site following the GMA segment. The only problem: the Good Morning America segment didn't even mention 4chan's role in tormenting Jessi Slaughter. That could have been an oversight on the part of producers, or because of time constraints.But it could have also been an attempt by ABC to avoid provoking the notoriously disruptive group.

And then there was the Jessi Slaughter situation. A really messed up young girl living in a very bad situation, 4Chan's role in that was complex. Yes, she was mercilessly trolled/harassed but that may have saved her.

The girl is Jessica Leonhardt, aka Jessi Slaughter, the 2010 Internet celebrity known for her provocative videos, angry father, false accusation of rape against Blood on the Dance Floor’s lead singer -- and for all the cyberbullying she’s endured.

The Slaughter saga began in July 2010, when Slaughter’s video addressing her haters -- mostly known for the words "If you can't stop hating...I'll pop a glock in your mouth and make a brain slushie”-- caught the attention of rancorous online community and image board 4chan and rocketed her to Internet fame.

In what Oh Internet, a site documenting online culture, describes as an attempt “to alert her parents of their child's extra-curricular activities,” 4chan engaged in multiple “raids” against the Slaughter family.

These “raids” included publishing her personal information, sending her pizza and escorts off Craigslist, prank-calling, trolling Slaughter’s social media accounts, flooding her chat rooms, and uploading mean-spirited videos to YouTube.

Many years ago when I taught in high school, there were bomb threats. We would have to evacuate while LE searched. This was in the days of landlines. I think they always caught be kids who did it and it stopped.

The internet has expanded the pool of kids who would do these fake, hopefully, threats.

However, the Pres is correct. Even with the internet all over the world, violent video games, violents music , family breakdown, psychotropic meds, etc, the US is the leader in mass shootings.

There is only one thing and that is the g word.

Apparently nothing changes the addiction to guns for some.

I didn't know that one of the young men who thwarted a terrorist attack in France was also a student at this Roseburg college. Who happened to be doing a dancing with the stars gig when this shooting occurred. And today, one of the other men involved in that France train thing who helped stop the terrorist was stabbed repeatedly last night in Sacramento. This is making me wonder if there isnt something else going on. Hope the third young man is safe and stays that way. Just sayin.

In 2008 he joined the army and tries to kill himself after 4 weeks of basic training? Then in 2010 he ends up in a psyche hospital?

Why wasn't he flagged in the system??? He obviously had a LOT of mental problems and he was under psychiatric care at least TWICE in the last few years.

When I was in school they had us (students) crawl under owe desk & cover our heads, (like that was going to save us), & we had bomb shelters as well. Last I heard it was a right not an addiction, for some that like to collect things others may see it as addictions & that's fine, but I don't call stamp collectors addicts so I wouldn't think to call a gun collector an addict. jmo idk

A suicidal mentally unstable young man that wears camo everyday, idolizes the IRA, and has a history of angry outbursts.

Where was he getting the money to buy all of his firearms? Was he on SSI? Was he mother giving him money?

I know it is not practical for various reasons (slippery legal slope etc...) but I wish the mother could be held partially accountable. She knew he was unbalanced, suicidal and prone to anger issues yet she encouraged him to own multiple weapons.

And then what does she do? She "runs away" and hides after this happens, and the media gives her a "free pass".
