IMO, Simon only being required to pay $40 per month to Erin in child support is really unfair, no matter what her financial situation was. Yes, he covered costs for the children's school fees up until the beginning of 2023 (i think), but $20 per month per child is a pittance! It would barely cover snacks for one weekend and It certainly doesn't paint him as a doting, dedicated and supportive father. Not that this is any sort of excuse for the crimes committed against his family, but objectively speaking, its pretty horrible.

I think that he definitely was trying to extract himself from the toxic relationship and i wonder if he had told his parents to put distance between them and her for the sake of the separation and needing to move on... and she didnt (obviously) take it well.

It's been discussed here many times that if Simon only had to pay $40 a month, it means that Erins income was higher than his given she had the majority of custody.

Regardless, it's not at all relevant to the fact that three people died, IMO.

Omg she's on trial for three murders and one attempted murder, by mushroom poisoning.

I don't know that I'd say, [mushrooms] taste good and they're very healthy.

Yikes.

JMO

Tell that to Erin. Her defense team brought up the subject.
But we need not carry it on. It's not relevant to us.

We don't actually know if she intended to put those studies into practise. She seemed to be a professional student imo
Nothing wrong with a thirst for knowledge.

  • #724
Someone's weight should not be relevant, nor discussed. IMO
Erin was the one who raised it and it's being over discussed in her testimony.

As I have previously, it's not relevant to us.

Also all of that supposed rage had pretty much fizzled out over the next couple of months, long before the poisoning occurred as far as the evidence shows to date hadn't it...??
BTW bet you are all glad I'm not on the jury haha
Rage isn't always something that can be seen. Inner rage can be just as dangerous, if not more so,..

With respect, the judge decides what is and is not relevant evidence in this case, and has allowed this testimony in as evidence, and it's therefore both relevant and able to be discussed.

We're probably not going to see any further evidence today at least. Disappointing.
Erin will likely tell defence that she doesn't want to give any more evidence... But now they have put her on the stand, they can delay it all they like, but the prosecution gets their time with her no matter what. Looking forward to that.

Nothing wrong with a thirst for knowledge.
That's why her defences claim that she accidentally picked Death Caps doesn't wash. She said just earlier that she had identified one species of mushrooms to avoid and she had done some research on mushrooms.

I think the next update might be that court is finished for today.

Erin will likely tell defence that she doesn't want to give any more evidence...
It might have been wise for her to consider that before she got into the witness box. Unfortunately for her that's the choice she made so she'll have to prepare somewhat for cross-examination by the prosecution. It is her trial, after all.

I think I can see the defence strategy of trying to explain some of Erin’s actions with what she has presented in today’s testimony.

1. Discharging herself from hospital, reluctance to have the children seen at hospital= has discharged herself from hospital before after son’s birth, doesn’t trust doctors/hospitals to treat her children because of perceived negative experiences in the past, believes hospitals are traumatic for her children.

2. Didn’t get as sick herself from the beef Wellington= history of bulimia, she might say she vomited her lunch up straight way.

3. Searching for death caps on iNaturalist=her dog ate an unknown mushroom once and she might claim she needed to see what deathcaps look like to avoid her dog eating them?

I sure hope the jury can see through the “poor little me” act once the Crown have had their turn with her evidence.

Re being a professional student.

In my mind an ongoing thirst for knowledge is something that should be admired, not denigrated.

If her testimony is supposed to explain why she discharged herself from hospital her family’s medical history is doing a LOT
of heavy lifting.

Broken down : her daughter had an ovarian mass as a baby which was alarming but benign and didn’t cause any problems. There was some initial scepticism but the right imaging was ordered and no harm was done. Unrelated to that, an abdo X-ray when she was 4 years showed she was “backed up” i.e. constipated,

Erin’s son had a knee injury that was initially managed conservatively with physio and then it was eventually decided he needed an operation.

It’s just so insulting to families with children with severe, ongoing needs to try to claim that these issues were so traumatising for Erin that she couldn’t cope with medical professionals as a consequence.
she's been living life on easy mode and doesn't even realise her privilege. Every one of her demons comes from inside herself, IMO. To inherit enough money to be able to buy homes outright with no mortgage? to have two healthy children (those things she details are so minor)? to have a husband who even after you separate is so patient and gracious? such a great family he has (had) too. And she does nothing but whine about it all. jmo. Its infuriating

Hates hospitals / Doesn't trust the hospital system
Wants to work in a hospital as a nurse/midwife

Accidentally put death caps in the meal
Was knowledgable about Mushroom Species

"I want nothing to do with them" "They are a lost cause"
"I loved them"

Hypochondriac with imagined illnesses
Discharged herself and resisted her kids being seen when there was a real health threat

Didn't want to be married / cohabitating with Simon
Wanted Simon to pay for everything
Wanted Simons family to keep treating her the same as prior to separation

Didn't care about money / Was Generous with loans to the family
Got angry that she wouldn't get more than $40 a month in CS.

The two side of EP, IMO.

She's just lied...

Erin concedes the beef Wellington must have contained death caps

By Joseph Dunstan

Colin Mandy SC asks Erin Patterson about the meal she cooked for her relatives on July 29.

"Do you accept that there must have been death cap mushrooms in it?" Mr Mandy asks.

"Yes, I do," Erin says.

"Do you remember where the mushrooms that went into that meal came from?" he asks.

"The vast majority came from the local Woolworths in Leongatha, and there were some from the grocer in Melbourne," Erin tells the court.

However, Erin says the specific purchase of the mushrooms is not clear in her mind, beyond it being in the April school holidays.

"I know it was in the April school holidays, I think we went there for a week or two in the April school holidays, maybe only a week," she says.

She says she's purchased mushrooms from those kind of shops before, including shitake, porcini and enoki varieties.

"Sometimes the bags might say something like 'wild mushroom mix' or 'forest mushroom'," she says.
