I think that large black cone around his camera lens is to capture as much of the reflected inside image from his flash units as possible, given that the van windows are tinted dark.

Without that cone he would likely just capture his own reflection back off the window glass.
I see. Thanks for the explanation.

Xanthé M. who is a forensic anthropologist, calls out the possibility of Erin Patterson potentially being both a narcissist and having a borderline personality diagnosis and being unmedicated, and the potential consequences of that.

Around 12minutes in, Xanthé alludes to Erin being a narcissistic psychopath and thinking she can outsmart everybody.

Is Xanthé serious?

Xanthe is always serious when there's a camera or recorder rolling.

Given she's never met Erin personally or assessed her professionally, her opinion is about as good as anyone who has a passing interest in the psychology of convicted killers.

I'll have to listen later. Xanthe does tend to pop up all over the place with her theories. She should go back to blonde, imo.

I know right?!

Her qualifications are as such:

Assoc Prof Mallett holds an impressive academic background, with degrees across the United Kingdom: undergraduate Archaeological Science at the University of Bradford, a Masters in Biological Anthropology from the University of Cambridge, and a PhD in Forensic Facial Recognition from the University of Sheffield.

She’s not a psychologist or a psychiatrist.

Welcome to Xanthe's Dial-a-Comment. Please use the following menu:

1. A dissertation on Proust's À la recherche du temps perdu

2. The likelihood of the Reserve Bank lowering rates in the next 6 months, and why

3. A psychological diagnosis of Erin Patterson's personality

She may have at least waited until the appeal.

Well, you know what they say about opinions. And she's got one. What a surprise.

I'd argue that I, with my alphabet worth of diagnoses, am more informed, but that would just be my opinion.

I think this book has been mentioned before, but my daughter has just reminded me about the book The Natural Way of Things by Charlotte Wood.

Australian author, literary fiction, won several awards and nominated for loads more. Dystopian novel where a group of women are sent away to an abandoned property in the middle of the desert. They have little in common apart from so-called sexual crimes.

One of their male guards is horrific towards them (you can imagine) and one of the women forages for mushrooms hoping to poison him. He realises her intentions and deliberately chooses plates at random, swapping his plate with a different woman every night. One evening the cook decides to kill herself - when everyone is eating she fries death caps for her own dinner only to have them snatched away by the guard who eats them himself.

The author has had long-standing academic roles, lecturing at universities.

Given Erin’s literary background I’m sure this would have been on her radar.

Agree, it's puzzling to me.

Negative childhood experiences undeniably do shape us and may explain us - but they don't excuse us. As adults, we have the power to take responsibility for the rest of our lives.

We can stay wallowing in blame and self-pity, or we can stand up tall and choose to be loyal and genuinely accountable to ourselves for our own actions and happiness - both for our own well-being, and for those around us who rely on our integrity, presence, and emotional maturity.

Only by accepting full responsibility for ourselves can we truly move forwards.

I believe that accepting blame is something EP has never done - even once - in any area whatsoever of her entire childhood or adult life. And thus we see the devastating outcome.
Her sister sounds quite normal.

I feel for the kids. I wonder what they're thinking? That mum murdered their aunt and grandparents, or that mum was innocent and was wrongfully found guilty? Would be a personal hell no doubt.

I know she’s spoken to her friend Tim Watson Munro who is an Australian criminal psychologist - but it’s her opinion she’s giving, she can’t really speak on behalf of Tim.

I know she’s an Associate Professor but I still don’t think she has the qualifications to diagnose Erin - quite apart from the fact that she has had no access to Erin and has never even spoken to her.

A perfect example of why it would be helpful to know what diagnosis she has if any, and what should be taken with a grain of salt.

She’ll be undergoing psych evaluation before sentencing.

IMO

Oh thank you! Now I know where I need to get all of my info from a person who’s unqualified to give it.

I bet Mallet could tell me if it would be rainy or sunny tomorrow in my suburb because she’s just that good.

She’s not a narcissist though. I just want to point that out. <😬> Just good at a lot of random stuff.

Erin’s sister is probably quite normal, showing a normal response to being annoyed by the media….

“It was a sentiment echoed at the homes of Erin Patterson’s estranged husband, Simon Patterson, in the fringes of leafy Korumburra, and on the front door of the home of her sister, Ceinwen Scutter, in Melbourne’s south-east.”

“No entry without appointment,” the sign on Simon’s fence read.

You are trespassing. If you do not leave immediately, the police will be called,” warned the handwritten one on Scutter’s door.”

Given that she thinks that Keli Lane is innocent destroys any credibility she may have...

I believe that it is usually up to the judge to decide if a pre-sentencing mental health assessment is to be done, although I gather that in some jurisdictions the defence can request it.

When the mental health of the person being sentenced is at issue, a psychological or psychiatric report can aid the sentencing process by highlighting mitigating factors related to the person’s psychological or psychiatric conditions or history and identifying sentencing options that are suitable or unsuitable in their circumstances.

These reports may reveal underlying psychiatric disorders, trauma, substance abuse, or other mental health conditions that influenced the offender’s behaviour at the time of the offence. Such information can provide a deeper understanding of the individual’s circumstances and inform a more nuanced sentencing outcome.

Not sure if it was that podcast or another that Xanthe had her two cents on,
but it drove me bonkers when she kept saying “dessicator” instead of dehydrator.

Not just that, she also thinks the foster mother of William Tyrrell is completely innocent.

She lost me right there.
