Chutes get cleaned and disinfected several times a year at least or at a push of a button in very new more expensive systems.
There are bags that go inside the compactors that run in size up to 350 pounds. The average per capita waste stream in the US is 4.8 pounds per day. There are 800 apartments, lets say low average occupancy 2. 1600 x 4-.8= 7,680 lbs or over 3.5 tons of trash a day! Not including events, catering etc.

When the compacted bags are taken to the landfill they are buried basically in layers of gravel, sand, and compacted again!
