Pierre is doing a great job sinking himself in Canada... I didn't realise he was that nuts. He is even promoting plastic straws, so bereft is he of any policy of his own.. It's as if he has undergone a secret lobotomy, he is clacking away with a repeat of Trump nonsense, and doesn't seem to register that it is not going down well...

Trump is a disaster but If you face reality, Biden's open borders gave Trump a lot to talk about, allowing him to twist facts ---- I believe Biden's poor handling of immigration engendered tremendous anger and is a,big reason Trump won the election
I'm not aware that Biden had open borders. BBC says he deported more people than even Trump. I know Obama was also big on deportation.

And then there was the bipartisan immigration bill that Trump had the Republicans shoot down because he wanted to use immigration as a campaign fight.

Poilievre has been echoing Trump for a long time. He was popular when running against Trudeau. Poilievre is a good debater - good at arguing. After Trudeau stepped down, Poilievre was still popular. When Carney was elected by the Liberal Party, people were relieved to see an alternative to Poilievre/Trump campaign language and style.

Poilievre and the founder of Rebel News have been friends since attending university together. Poilievre plans to remove funding for the CBC and fund Rebel News. That's a big problem for access to journalism in Canada.

Poilievre also said that he will violate the rights of Indigenous Peoples if 80% want pipelines on their land. He needs consent, not majority.

We have a billionaire here - Clive Palmer - who has just started a political party called "Trumpet of Patriots" with campaign hats that spout Make Australia Great Again. (so original  )

He enlists Tucker Carlson as a speaker, and says that Australia "needs" many Trump-like policies.

Scary times with these people trying to swing democracies to the hard and extremist right.

Our federal election is 3rd May.

Who is the scapegoat in Australia? Right wing politicians needs someone to blame.

Poilievre made Trudeau and the Liberals the scapegoat in Canada. During the Leaders Debate on Thursday, Prime Minister Carney had to remind Poilievre that although he wishes he was campaigning against Trudeau, Trudeau is long gone. There's no point in continuing to talk about him because there's a new Liberal leader and he has a centrist platform, unlike Trudeau.

Palmer is slamming both major parties. The Liberals (right tendencies) are "disappointing", the current Labour govt (left tendencies) are doing a "crapola job" for many of his reasons.

But he favours the Liberals (right tendencies) because they will give him billionaire-type tax cuts if they get in.

We also have a centrist party called The Greens. They are popular but can't gather enough steam. They generally give their preferential votes to Labour (left tendencies).

The Greenland plot thickens. It has recently been revealed that there is a group that is very excited about the idea of buying Greenland. They are the tech billionaires (tech bros) who have promoted the idea of “network states”/freedom cities. I have mentioned this before on the thread, but not in connection with Greenland. You will notice that the name Peter Thiel is mentioned in both articles. As I’ve posted before, he employed JD Vance in Silicon Valley, poured millions into his Senate campaign, and introduced him to Trump for his consideration as VP candidate.

As the Trump administration intensifies efforts to acquire Greenland from Denmark — or take it by force — some Silicon Valley tech investors are promoting the frozen island as a site for a so-called freedom city, a libertarian utopia with minimal corporate regulation, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The discussions are in early stages, but the idea has been taken seriously by Trump's pick for Denmark ambassador, Ken Howery, who is expected to be confirmed by Congress in the coming months and lead Greenland-acquisition negotiations, the people said. Howery, whose involvement with the idea hasn't been previously reported, once co-founded a venture-capital firm with tech billionaire Peter Thiel, a leading advocate for such low-regulation cities. Howery is also a longtime friend of Elon Musk, a top Trump advisor.

Trump isn’t the only person who wants to buy the Danish territory, however. Those in the technobro-iverse have previously expressed interest in purchasing the land mass and using it for their own dystopian purposes.
<snip>
A key figure in the success of both the Network State movement and Donald Trump has been the shadowy tech billionaire Peter Thiel. Pronomos Capital, the venture capital firm that has been responsible for financing much of the movement’s special projects (including Praxis), is financially supported by Thiel.

Women, usually, mostly. As always. Women who want to work and expect equal pay , women who don't want to have lots of babies, women who answer back, women who vote, women who have the nerve to stand for Parliament, ... Women who won't be Crumb Maidens to the leading men.. ( crawl under the table and wait for the crumbs to fall down ).. women who (and this is a direct quote ) 'drive the kiddies around' and hope for a fuel discount, women who are concerned about energy price rises ( 'direct quote again ' women who do the ironing')... the usual. You know how it goes.. Women who wear pants. Women who have rude slogans on their T shirts. on and on.

Then, it's kids. Kids who want to go to university, and have to borrow money for tuition. kids who use social media , kids who won't do their homework, kids who make suburbs hell, kids who try and ride the trains for free, kids who pinch cars and drive 'em over potholes.. ...

Then, it's all the categories that come under gay, lesbian, trans, .. all and everything in between.. ..

Then, it's wretched leftists that shout that the right wing ought to pay taxes, as if this was even thought of!!!! the nerve.. ..

Then, it's you guessed it, immigrants... same old rubbish..

and oddly, since they contribute a hell of a lot to the economy, overseas students.!! hard to believe, but they are in the firing line.. Apparently , they take up housing!!

In a move echoing his real estate roots, Donald Trump has reportedly been offered the island of Bougainville — complete with its large gold mine — as the 'deal of the century'.

Currently part of Papua New Guinea, Bougainville voted overwhelmingly for independence in a 2019 referendum — but the result wasn't legally binding.

However, Bougainville's president, former rebel commander Ishmael Toroama, remains undeterred.

'Bougainville is for independence. It is only a matter of time,' he told The World in October, setting 2027 as the target for full statehood.

Then, there's the prospect of Bougainville becoming part of the United States.

'If the US comes and says, "Yes, we support Bougainville independence," then, I can say, “Well, the Panguna mine is here. It’s up to you.”’' Toroama said.

Hmmmm, productive kinds of sounds like Vance wants something from the Vatican.
Forgiveness? But I'm afraid I can't add a laughing emoji, even though that is in its own way hilarious. :(

  • #511
Vance is living with the impression that he knows how to run things, . anything.... Denmark, Greenland, Washington, the Vatican, the entire Catholic Church, the army, the navy and the airforce, Harvard, ,Japan, China, South Africa, the ENTIRE European Community, Britain, Brazil, Norway, Sweden, Canada, . ad nauseum... ad infinitum, on and on and on and on..
And probably the wife and kids in particular. Who'd be them?

Hershey, the biggest chocolate producer in the United States, raised the prices of its chocolates last year, and ultimately struggled to maintain consumer demand. The company had its worst profit in seven years in 2024.

Hersheys chocolates are nothing special, IMO. Pretty mehh.
Give me Andes Mints anytime!

Something that has been missing as far as I can tell in all the discussions about Greenland.

Ninety percent of the population is indigenous Inuit.

Here we go again with the colonialism.

So not being "European", will they all be sent to El Salvador?

This has now been fact checked.

Donald Trump Offered Island With $60B Gold Mine? Fact-Checking Viral Claim

However, the quote, “If the US comes and says, ‘Yes, we support Bougainville independence,’ then, I can say, ‘Well, the Panguna mine is here. It’s up to you,’” is not recent.

It originally appeared in an October 30, 2024, article by The World, titled "Bougainville: The World’s Next New Country?"—a full week before Donald Trump assumed the presidency for a second term. There is no current evidence suggesting Toroama has made any direct offer to Trump regarding Bougainville or its resources.

A peace agreement signed in 2001 laid the groundwork for a future vote on independence—fulfilled in 2019—but the island's path to full nationhood remains stalled, awaiting formal approval from PNG’s government.

They’ll probably be herded onto reservations far from their original lands. The U.S. is really good at that. 😡

Seems Daily Mail have tried to present it as current.

I should have checked it

I should have been more alert.
It's a relief that it isn't current.

Thanks South

Not your fault, Toots. The DM should have fact checked - they took the info from another tabloid (the US Sun) ... it is their sloppy and sensationalist reporting.

I'm reading Survival of the Richest: Escape Fantasies of the Tech Billionaires by Douglas Rushkoff at the moment. These uber-rich tech bros are mostly misanthropic sociopaths. And they have the money and influence to actually pull off some of this dystopian-sounding stuff. I would hate to see any of them get their mitts into Greenland.
