"China secretly reverses

retaliatory tariffs on US on key product.

1745673871790.webp

China has quietly reversed
previously imposed retaliatory tariffs of 125%
on some semiconductors
made in the United States,
according to information provided on Friday by three import agencies in the technology hub of Shenzhen.

The agencies learned of the tariff exemptions late Thursday,
although they were not officially announced.

For months,
Beijing has taken a hard line, saying it can handle the escalating trade war with the U.S.

But the tariff waivers suggest China may need to reduce some tariffs on key goods that are difficult to produce domestically or source from elsewhere.

A manager at Zhengnenliang Supply Chain, an importer,
told CNN
she learned of the tariff waiver
on eight types of integrated circuits, covering most semiconductors except memory,
which have been lifted.

She learned the information during a routine customs declaration on Thursday.

'We only found out after we filed our declaration — if we hadn’t, we wouldn’t have known about the waiver',
she told CNN."

Yes, I posted earlier about China consulting with its business leaders to find out what products they could only get from the US at the moment. With some US companies realising that they had shipped to China and not incurred a tariff.

I get the impression that China is doing what is best for its businesses, while still looking for alternate suppliers and/or beefing up its own productivity in areas which need it.

For example, it is exempting "a certain number of aerospace equipment parts," including engines and landing gear" while it is sending back and cancelling Boeing aircraft orders.

Snip: "I have no doubt that Trump plans to turn the American people into Canada haters to facilitate an invasion and theft of what he needs in Canada. It is classic Fascist behaviour."

FWIW, I have heard absolutely no person (outside of the White House lunatics) say anything disparaging about Canada or Canadians. I have only heard people expressing support of our friends/neighbors.

You warm my soul. <3

Article from Apr 24, Thursday

“Any claims about the progress of China-U.S. trade negotiations are groundless as trying to catch the wind and have no factual basis,” the spokesman said.

(Commerce Ministry spokesman He Yadong)

The President of the USA told TIME Magazine that he is in meetings with China to discuss the war that the USA started with China, and tariffs imposed by the USA on China. But none of it is true. It's not even propaganda, it is deceitful.

The USA President, and by association the USA Federal Government, is dishonest and evasive. It was previously established that this same government is unreliable, untrustworthy and fickle. The USA has nothing in place to address a dishonest, untrustworthy president, and still the USA people believe that their country is the best in the world. Bizarre.

"You have to understand, I'm dealing with all the companies, very friendly countries. We're meeting with China. We're doing fine with everybody. But ultimately, I've made all the deals."
Will you call President Xi if he doesn’t call you?
No.
You won’t?
Nope.
Has he called you yet?
Yep.
When did he call you?
He's called. And I don't think that's a sign of weakness on his behalf.
But you would think it’s a sign of weakness if you called him?
I don’t–I just look—
Well, what did he say?
If people want to–well, we all want to make deals. But I am this giant store. It's a giant, beautiful store, and everybody wants to go shopping there. And on behalf of the American people, I own the store, and I set prices, and I'll say, if you want to shop here, this is what you have to pay.

I think it is significant that a felon was elected as president, and this felon supports other criminals ... like:

Recently pardoning Michele Fiore (Nevada politician) who was convicted of six counts of federal wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud
Pardoning all of the J6 convicted criminals
Appointing Peter Navarro who was convicted for contempt of Congress and served 4 months in prison
Appointing Charles Kushner who was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison for campaign finance violations, tax evasion and witness tampering (then pardoned by Trump)

Probably there are more, but those ones spring to mind immediately. It is hard to expect any kind of honesty.

imo

ETA a few links:
Trump 2.0: Bracing for criminals, corruption and constitutional crises
A Nevada politician was convicted of using funds meant to honor a slain officer on plastic surgery. Trump just pardoned her
Criminal records of Jan. 6 rioters pardoned by Trump include rape, domestic violence
Donald Trump found guilty on 34 charges

Some Trump supporters have been interviewed and they repeat his claim that other countries are taking advantage of the US, so he is only trying to stop that.

Not all of us do, @otto. In fact Rachel Maddow last night showed a bunch of polls on various subjects regarding how Trump is doing. Not well by wide margins. Of course, the only power the people have is to march, and march they do.

The polls…

This was last nights show where she talked about all the cases Trump has had to reverse course on thanks to lawsuits.

Here’s a link to Rachel’s opening comments on her shows. I think you’ll find it encouraging. As I’ve mentioned before, she spends considerable time covering protests around the country.

I hope you can access these in Canada,

CBC interviewed people down South. They think it's hilarious that rude, disrespectful Trump is taunting Canadians. They crack jokes about Canadians having "Trump Derangement Syndrome" and their "heads exploding". They think taunting and upsetting Canadians is funny ... bully mentality at its best!

"The smile begins to form on Joseph Redmon's face, and there's even a little chuckle, at the first mention of Canada becoming the 51st state. ... "He's doing that just to get under people's skin and to make them upset, that's just sort of his mantra," Redmon says.
...

That includes Ginny Delano, 72, a retiree, who thinks Trump is trying to taunt Canadians.

I just think it's funny when there's a lot of people with TDS, Trump derangement syndrome," she says, referring to the derogatory term used to describe negative reactions to Trump that are seen as irrational.

"Their heads explode, and I think it's funny when he says that kind of stuff and gets a rise out of them."

It isn't BS in my opinion. This man has some serious cognitive issues. He can't remember anything he has said except the incongruous lies.

The incompetence is astounding. He seems to believe tariffs are making the USA billions of dollars. I'd be willing to bet that he can't even write the numeral for one billion.

MHO
Agreed, appears to be some significant cognitive impairment here. Some significant cognitive impairment from all the people who backed him and defo amongst the MAGA too
If this was Biden can you picture the 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 of verbal assaults he would get?

Moo
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 is not allowed to be used? Why?

In the meantime Trump says he's serious about the 51st state. When he threatens to take THEIR rights away, will they think he's just kidding? Apparently he WAS kidding when he predicted the end of the Ukraine war in 24 hours after he was elected. How do his supporters not realize how pathetic he is?

You realize that these people have been brainwashed don't you? They are not the majority of Americans.

I am living this otto. It is very painful to be so helpless. Both of my federal senators and my house representative are all in on Trump. My state is beginning to feel the impacts economically, especially the poor.

I know people who have joined the cult. It is so sad to witness people who I knew as smart, loving kind people become filled with hate and support this regime.

My opinion of my very own struggle through these times.

United we stand. Divided we fall.

Trump supporters think it's really funny when Trump taunts others; they chuckle when others are bullied. They are chuckling when Judges are arrested, protesters are rounded up and imprisoned, USA citizens are told to self-deport. They will keep on chuckling until Trump's exaggerations and jests impact their lives. Even then, they will double down and declare that Trump advised them of short-term pain for long-term gain (wealth), so he's still the right choice for president.

Who in their right mind thinks it's okay for the USA President to exaggerate and make dishonest statements or to joke about war?

How does anyone know when Trump is speaking "figuratively", "exaggerating", making "fake news", "jesting" or being truthful?

"You said you would end the war in Ukraine on Day One.

Well, I said that figuratively, and I said that as an exaggeration, because to make a point, and you know, it gets, of course, by the fake news [unintelligible]. Obviously, people know that when I said that, it was said in jest, but it was also said that it will be ended." (TIME)

Half of the people who voted are similarly brain-washed, and that is a problem. They dismiss the arrest and imprisonment of protesters/ immigrants with visas/ USA citizens as "getting rid of criminals". They believe that tariffs are a tax on foreign countries and cheered the creation of the External Revenue Office. When the USA president is called out for blatant untruths, they dismiss it as as jesting and exaggeration.

Life today in the USA must be even more divisive than the Biden years, where Trump/Republicans spent Biden's entire presidential terms harassing him.

I am down South, in a Trump state, and stand by the assertion that I have not heard anyone say anything negative about Canada.

ETA: my part of the state will feel it acutely if Canadians decide to stop spending their tourist dollars here. Maybe that is why.

Removing inter-provincial trade barriers is already making a difference! I doubt Canadians will buy USA wine after the boycott, because Canadian wines are so similar to USA wines. It is a $1.1 billion USD loss for the USA.

"Canada's united boycott of U.S. booze could result in a banner year for British Columbia's wine industry, while also delivering a financial blow to vineyards south of the border.

The Buy Canadian movement is expected to boost demand for B.C. wine and some other types of homegrown liquor as the absence of U.S. product means more space at retail stores and on restaurant menus. The number of visitors to vineyards could also rise as many Canadians steer clear of the U.S. this summer.
...

Several provinces are looking to boost interprovincial trade in the face of looming U.S. tariffs, which could lead to more B.C. wines on store shelves across the country.

Since B.C. struck a direct-to-consumer wine sale program with Alberta in early January, over 43,200 bottles have been sold from 89 B.C. wineries, according to B.C. cabinet minister Garry Begg.
...

South of the border, it's a distressing situation as Canada is the largest export market for the U.S. wine industry, with a retail value of about $1.1 billion US annually. ... Even after the Canadian boycott is eventually resolved, some U.S. industry leaders are concerned about the long-term impact because of the psychological damage to the consumer."

I wonder if the cheap cost of mushrooms has anything to do with tariffs. For the second time in a month, white mushrooms at No Frills here in Toronto were $1.24 for 227 grams. These are usually between $1.99 on sale to around $3 regular price. Grape tomatoes of the same size were the same price. Some things have definitely gone up in price but not these. Could it be they aren’t shipping to the US anymore and have excess stock?
