Great point! If she left her dog at home when she drove to Edmonton for one day, would she have asked her estranged husband to look after the dog? That would explain why he had a key, but not why he was there at 8:30PM ... unless he was a bit sloppy with looking after the dog. She was late returning from Edmonton, and presumably he knew when she was returning. Dogs eat in the morning and again at 4PM (in order to finish up before bed), so is there a logical explanation for the estranged husband to be at the house at 8:30PM for the dog?
I doubt that it would have been messy to leave a large dog alone for an overnight on Tuesday until Wednesday evening. Large dogs can manage, small dogs can't.
Totally depends on the dog. I would have never left my large dog home alone - I would have no couch left.
Same with feeding times - animals get fed based on their human's schedule.
