Is this really their idea of strongarming Canada into being the 51st state? I don't think many Republicans have truly thought this through. Canada would have just as many elector votes and representatives as say California does. I'm fairly certain that most Canadians would be further left than MAGA/U.S. conservatives and they would probably never win all 3 branches of government again.

Just an opinion, but I think now is the time to have election and sovereignty conversations with people in that age group to explain what Canadians will lose if they are seduced by promises of $$$ by the USA federal government.

<snipped for focus>

I wonder how the weak Canadian dollar also plays into this. Earlier this week I sent $500 to a family member in Canada and when the payment cleared through my bank it was only $350 in U.S. dollars.

Axios had this news yesterday, but clearly some major media didn't want this information to land at the same time as the White House Car Show. Trump "buys" a Tesla, Musk gives him $100 million.

$100 million is a good start on being able to give out "campaign support funds" to GOP congresspeople to keep them in line. How can these GOP House Representatives vote against the orders of a guy who puts $500,000 or so into your campaign funds so you can overwhelm the noise of outrage from your own consitutents in the next election?

Yeah, logic is not the strong suit in the Trump White House, is it?

The more outrageous the statements that he makes, the more you should watch to see what else is going on behind him/

That seems to be the Democrat argument against Canada joining the USA - based on the false belief that Canada is filled with liberal minded woke democrats.

That could not be farther from the truth. That is a myth perpetrated by the current USA president. His insults against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and disrespect for Canada, relied on propoganada that Canadians are a bunch of left-wing woke wingnuts. Canada does not have democrats or republicans, and Canadian government ideologies are not based on USA government ideologies.

At the last election, the Liberal government had a minority vote - meaning that although they were elected, they could not make any decisions without collaboration with another political party (NDP). That means that Canadians are not bleeding heart liberals - not at all.

The idea that Canada would ensure Democrat government in the USA is false. Canada is not filled with liberals, and liberals are not democrats.

The Canadian dollar fluctuates, just like the USA dollar and other currencies. It is lower now due to the USA war against Canada. Canadians should avoid travel to the USA to ensure that their dollar goes farther.

The Euro and the UK Pound have all risen against the dollar in the last week.

I was a bit worried about Arabica Coffee futures as Brazil was experiencing a drought that was concerning for their output, but the potential price surge has moderated as news of a good harvest elsewhere is lowering future pricing. ☕ 🙂

We're used to our dollar being worth less than the USD. No change there.

The good sign is that Canadians still have and are indeed using disposable income ... travelling ... they're just using that disposable income by travelling to other destinations outside of the USA.

For March Break, More Canadians Are Travelling Further South

‘Point Roberts, Wash. Supports Canada’: Small B.C. border town calls for action as economy sinks
Tuesday, two businesses in the community of just over 1,200 people told CTV News that revenue had plummeted to levels not seen since the pandemic, when the border was shut down.

“I just did my numbers for February, and I’m down 55 per cent,” said Tamra Hansen, the owner of Saltwater Café.

“I thought (it would be) 30 or 40 (per cent). I was trying to be optimistic, but it is a little more devastating than I thought.”

Most Canadians are moderates, that value politics that are more central, and tend to be fiscally conservative but socially progressive. Of course, this is generalized and tends to flip flop between being more center-left and center-right, but it feels like the more extreme left-wing or right-wing views have only started popping up in more recent years. Canadians have long prided themselves on not having "American style" politics.

That said, most Canadians I know don't for a second think we would be given any voting rights, and that the "51st State" talk is just to sound good to Americans. Most Canadians assume that if we were annexed, we'd be given no more rights than a territory. Aka the Puerto Rico treatment.

U.S. hardens rules for visiting Canadians
WASHINGTON — The United States will require Canadians visiting for more than 30 days to register with authorities, the federal register showed Wednesday, toughening rules as trade tensions soar between the North American neighbours.

The new requirement, effective from April 11, would harden enforcement of an existing law from which U.S. media said Canadian nationals had typically been exempt.

There is a great article from Bloomberg which has a running chart of all of Trump's tariff actions or non-actions.

<modsnip: Paywalled. Those who wish to read the article must pay for it. >

Most importantly, it has Bloomberg predictions of impact on the US.

The most severe may be the additional China tariff ( where the total is 20%). This risks a drop of Chinese imports to the US of 65%. No wonder Walmart is begging China for relief.

The next would be the EU tariff of 25%, which is anticipated to reduce EU imports to the US by 70% and reduce the US GDP by 1.5%. That 1.5% is a big chunk of change.

The potential of a tariff in opposition to the VAT has the potential to be a "major shock"

That's interesting. People visiting for tourism from a large group of Visa Waiver Program countries (largely European) do not have to register with authorities for a visit of more than 30 days. However, Canada is not on the list of VWP countries.

This ridiculous threat is not a common immigration policy.

GAWD , the blabbermouth cannot even have a decent polite press appearance with the Taoiseach of Ireland for St. Parick's Day without touting and promoting a huge pack of lies and talking about how great he is and everything bad is the fault of prior administrations.

It is very interesting to note that he is blaming the Stock Market response to Biden. He is clearly extremely sensitive to how the market is performing and clearly knows his erratic and unaccountable statements are being blamed for the volatility.

He is a terrible person, completely full of lies and useless boasting. Blaming everyone else. Spewing nasty spit with every bombastic word.

Edited to correct my spelling of Taoiseach
