I wouldn't like to live in America right about now.
Appears everyone's human rights are being eroded unless you're exceptionally wealthy. No freedom of speech, press being regulated, economic spiralling.
It's just madness. And people are letting it happen.

Moo

What are some ideas of what American people can do? We are protesting, sending emails, sending letters, boycotting, raising heck at Town Hall meetings (that the republicans are now avoiding). I would love to know what else the American people can do. Not being snarky. I would really love some ideas.

Mid-term elections aren't for another year and a half. At this point, congress has a Republican majority who either support Trump or are afraid of Trump and his base. The Democrat (minority in congress) cannot win a vote to make changes.

Edit: adding, for those who don't know, mid-term elections take place midway through a president's term and fills seats in the House and Senate that will be becoming vacant. This is when the majority in Congress can change. If people get out and vote!

I went shopping at No Frills this morning. Cantaloupe, seedless red and white grapes and asparagus were all on sale and none are American grown. I am so glad grocery stores are buying from other countries.

I’m hearing so many stories about how some Canadians are being treated by some Americans this March break. This is going to have a massive impact on their tourism industry, not just from Canadians but world wide.

We are hoping that businesses, farmers, the stock market and reality will return however I personally am starting to think that the person driving the bus has a death wish (?). NPR (not favored by DJT)
had interviews with former USAID staff, for exanple:

They worked under other presidents- even under DJT before- they cannot understand the dismantling of everything. Shifting targets, shifting priorities- sure, changing management, sure. Just eliminating everything?

I admit I do not follow conservative pundits so maybe this has been a "plan," but yeah, a lot of the US does not comprehend what is being done. And it does not seem like a "plan," it seems like some kind of spiraling chaos. IMO.

It appears to be a slow erosion with a flurry of diverse announcements made each day - a flurry intended to keep people off-balance as they try to process what's happening.

Let's bomb the Houtis (shipping lane), use the War Measures Act to deport migrants, tell NATO that Canada wants to bust up the Arctic using USA ice-breakers, fire a couple of thousand people, threaten judges and lawyers, ponder new law making criticism of some people (e.g.: president) illegal, threaten global tariffs, slap a few more tariffs on Canada, blame Canada for threats to steal Canada from Canadians, tell USA citizens that they are going to be RICH, and go golfing.

Perhaps too many diverse announcements each day make some USA people weary and confused, so they stop paying attention. With others, they dogmatically believe what the USA government says and do not want to hear anything else - they're getting rich, who cares how it happens. Either way, there will be a rude awakening one day for people in the USA.

IMO, they are crashing public systems so they can be taken over by private corporations.

This is the message to Canadians - the USA is mercurial, unreliable, untrustworthy and uncoordinated, therefore new trade partners must be sought based on existing trade agreements with other countries.

"The damage done by Donald Trump's chaotic tariff war has Ontario businesses looking for new trading partners and allies ... U.S. president's scatter-shot approach has been to undermine decades of trust built between the two countries.
...

The uncertainty has meant businesses across the province are now planning with an eye to Trump's mercurial behaviour ... "The White House has shown itself to be unreliable, untrustworthy and uncoordinated"
...

"You're already seeing Canadian businesses look for new partners in Europe, in Asia and Latin America, where we have trade agreements and we have countries that actually value the alliances with us,"
...

"I think we've all come to the understanding that even if we do work out a trade agreement, the trust is gone," Payne said. "Canada has to do things differently. It's a giant wake up call."

A little more than half of the US did not vote for DJT, so do not paint the US with a broad brush:

It is not as if everything he does represents the current will of every citizen. And there is not compulsory voting, so some people did paticipate in the election.

I am not sure who is getting rich. Curious.

I should have been clearer, sorry. The people in Congress or whatever it's called are letting it happen - why are they not impeaching him? Granted they've tried twice before (not sure why) and he was found not guilty, then there is the fact that Trump is controlling everything by fear or by force so appreciate it would be difficult, particularly in light of one of his most recent executive orders targeting the lawyers that were attempting to prosecute him last time. He's undermining the constitution and changing it for his benefit. It's not right and it isn't fair.

(Get a bit muddled with the house of representative or senate stuff so may have confused a few things - apologies!)

The USA has had no problem painting Canada with a broad brush based on Trump's eight year anger at Trudeau. Almost everyone declares that Canada is a liberal, borderline communist, country based on what Trump says. Few, if any, acknowledge that the Liberal Party had a minority government in 2021, meaning most Canadians were not in agreement with those party values.

Most assume that if Canada were annexed, the entire country would vote Democrat. Why? Because Trump has falsely stated for years that Canadians are woke Democrats. Canadians want to know why people South of the border believe Trump rather than Canadians - propaganda brain-washing?

How many people look at Canada as a country where many value Conservative Party values? How many people in the USA understand that Liberal is not Democrat and Conservative is not Republican? How many recognize Canada as a strong, sovereign country that has little in common with the country to the South?

It's hard to believe that Trump was elected twice against the will of the people. Once, sure. Twice? Not really.

That's a question for the USA government.

"Boarding Air Force One on March 12, President Donald Trump quipped, “We’re going to raise hundreds of billions in tariffs; we’re going to become so rich we’re not going to know where to spend that money.”

The signs of a vengeful, obsessed, volatile man after revenge were all there that fateful Jan. 6. I hope there will be a sanguine expose' of how that developed. More and more I think the playbook for current events was being written at that point.

As I am the one paying the tariff when I go to the grocery store, or the appliance store, or turn on the power, or look to buy a car or new home, I wonder, indeed, how he plans to further extract $$$$ for me.

I cannot yet see any logic in the External Revenue Service, unless I am going to have to account for all the purchases I make in a year to some DJT corrupt "revenue collection".

I would agree completely with you, otto.

Diversion, after diversion, after diversion.

We know that there are very rich friends of his in the private prison business who expect to make money off of the illegal immigrant detention and removal.

The stuff about annexing Canada, Panama, and Greenland is part of some huge scheme for shipping rights, and fees, to be paid into the coffers of DJT billionaire pals.

He is just spinning fairy tales to the stupid who don't see their Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, farm subsidies, road and bridge repair, national parks and lands all slipping away behind their backs while the Carnival Barker in Chief tells tales of thin fame and fake glory.

This massive abuse of the Executive Order shows a flaw the Founding Fathers could not forsee: That one insane person could create a system to shut down all the other checks and balances they had introduced into the Constitution.

However, that really means that it will take a Constitutional Amendment to control or limit it and make the E.O. accountable. Without a rational majority in Congress or within the voting public, it seems like it may take decades to change this loophole that DJT is driving a battleship through.

What's he going on about icebreakers??

Guy's a flat out dunce.

Canada has a fleet of our own ice breakers, Canada has always built it's own ice breakers and naval ships via the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) - Seaspan, Irving Shipyards & Chantier- Davie Canada Inc. We have more on the way.

Put Trump on [/igore]; he's full of el toro poo poo.

And where have all the alleged 'Patriots' gone while Trump tramples their constitution?

PINOs?? Patriots In Name Only, so 'patriots', I suppose.

I'm guessing he'll tell rust belt USAnians that all that good 'Murican steel is now going to build icebreakers for our 51st and 52nd states.

It's transparent from the outside looking in. It is people in the USA that can't seem to see the big picture.

Common sense says that tariffs, on the global scale that the USA government is imposing, will lead to unemployment, higher cost of living, and recession. The USA government propaganda machine announces on a daily basis the tariffs mean a tax cut, higher wages, and wealth.

The USA government skipped the most important step in the plan. Manufacturing has to first be established in the USA, then tariffs can be added for protectionism. Tariffs alone do not suddenly create local manufacturing jobs or wealth.

"He is actually not implementing tax hikes," Leavitt said. "Tariffs are a tax hike on foreign countries that, again, have been ripping us off. Tariffs are a tax cut for the American people, and the president is a staunch advocate of tax cuts."
...

"I’m sorry, have you paid a tariff? Because I have," Boak responded. "They don’t get charged on foreign companies. They get charged on the importers."

"And ultimately, when we have fair and balanced trade, which the American people have not seen in decades, as I said at the beginning, revenues will stay here, wages will go up, and our country will be made wealthy again," Leavitt said."
