Probably Musk is bored. He has been dragging his 3 year old around to protect him and Trump for long enough, his AI is doing the work of sniffing out those evil foreign students, and there is a mission to Mars to plan with the Russians.

imo

Excellent description. I was wondering why the kid was being hauled out for public appearances and photo ops. Clearly, Musk was using him as a kind of human shield against questions shouted a him.

He's bored and very much annoyed that major shareholders in Tesla stock are outright saying he is neglecting the Tesla business. It's not fun anymore and he's getting criticism from the same people that balked at his demand for a half-billion $$$ salary a while back.

The stock market has always been legalized gambling.

Unfortunately, a huge number of ordinary workers and retirees have put their financial faith into investments that do have some stock market exposure. Most are at the mercy of the financial advisors of their 401Ks and pension funds.

Best to look away for the time being. The markets are going to be rocky for a while.

But it will be inflation and any potential devaluation in the dollar that will be inescapable.

And while Australia apparently got the "base rate" tariff of 10%, Trump is said to have "signalled" tougher barriers for our beef.
Maybe he doesn't like the way we check our beef for biohazards?

Australian beef undergoes rigorous checks for biohazards, including microbiological and chemical contamination, through a system of on-farm assurance, animal identification, and traceability, ensuring a safe and high-quality product.
How safe is Australian red meat to eat?

I imagine the people of the Heard & McDonald Islands are absolutely panicking about their 10% tariff.

* Heard & McDonald Islands population = 0

Trump’s tariffs: Carney says Canada will fight back ‘with purpose and with force’
  • The U.S. president said he will impose a 10 per cent baseline tariff on all imports to the United States that aren’t compliant with CUSMA.
  • While Canada and Mexico are spared from those “reciprocal” tariffs, other levies that were previously announced are still on the table.
  • Trump said a separate 25 per cent auto tariff will take effect at midnight.
  • Another 25 per cent tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum is still in effect.
Sources tell CBC News and Radio-Canada that Carney will speak with the provincial and territorial premiers Thursday morning. Carney is also expected to do a full news conference tomorrow.

Oh, this is Trump's problem with our beef ....

"Australians ... they're wonderful people, wonderful everything, but they ban American beef," Mr Trump said at the White House.
"Yet we imported $US3 billion of Australian beef from them just last year alone.
"They won't take any of our beef, they don't want it because they don't want it to affect their farmers."
Trump's tariffs on Australia have 'no basis in logic'

Why would we want US beef when we have more than enough already? And our beef is regulated from biohazards? We apparently have a trade barrier on US beef to prevent disease or contamination (as per the link).

Our PM is starting a $20,000,000 campaign to Buy Australian, as well as making partnerships with the United Arab Emirates and the European Union.

You know which country is not on that list?

Russia.

Watching the stock market ticker go down, down, down in real time as Trump was speaking and showing his tariff chart pretty much sums everything up for me. Are we great yet???

What Trump said today about Canada dairy and subsidy was 100% nonsense. The tariff on dairy is 7.5%, not 275-300%. USA does not subsidize Canada. Trump clearly does not know basic facts about Canada. Does Trump have a mental deterioration that explains his confusion?

In my opinion, yes. He has some severe cognitive decline and is dealing with lots of health issues that we do not know about. He is very truly medically unwell and I often wonder what kind of medication his team has to give him on a daily basis to keep him able to make these speeches and appear in public. It’s honestly frightening. All MOO.

What did poor little Sri Lanka do to deserve such a brutal tariff?

His bombastic and volcanic spewing of really reprehensible comments is not excusable.

This one is hitting me hard. I don't need a new car but I eat a lot of beef, much of it from Australia.

Well, it runs in the family. His father, Fredrick Trump, had Alzheimer's dementia. FWIW He lived to be 93. The linked article suggests his sister was also displaying symptoms but not formally diagnosed.

Trump has never been the brightest bulb. ever
He apparently has had incorrect notions about tariffs for most of his adult life. Those around him with more intelligence should be advising him and correct those notions but they don't do that. Instead, with the assistance of the Republican party Trump is taking our country down down and down----ruining lives, tearing apart our good relationship with our previous allies including Canada- making enemies of prior allies. Is that really what a normal president does? I don't think so

Twitter thread on how they've calculated the tariff rates for individual countries. If it's correct, and I think it is, it's completely mad! They've taken the country's trade deficit with the USA, divided that by that country's exports to the USA and said that is the 'tariff' that that country charges! Hence the nonsense like slapping a 50% tariff rate on a tiny Africa country like Lesotho.

America doesn't have vast swathes of empty factories just waiting for somebody to fill with them with machinery, and even if it did it's only got an unemployment rate of 4.1%, which is about as full an employment rate as you'll get in a modern economy. So where are the workers going to come from.

All that slapping huge tariffs on your trading partners is going to do is increase the cost of the products that people need in there everyday lives. There's going to be an enormous increase in the cost of living.

America is about to discover why autarky doesn't work.
