What did poor little Sri Lanka do to deserve such a brutal tariff?
I had a look at what Sri Lanka exports to the US. Primarily clothes, textiles, finished rubber products.

I prob won't be getting my beloved lamb that comes from Oz.Oh, this is Trump's problem with our beef ....
"Australians ... they're wonderful people, wonderful everything, but they ban American beef," Mr Trump said at the White House.
"Yet we imported $US3 billion of Australian beef from them just last year alone.
"They won't take any of our beef, they don't want it because they don't want it to affect their farmers."
Trump's tariffs on Australia have 'no basis in logic'
Why would we want US beef when we have more than enough already? And our beef is regulated from biohazards? We apparently have a trade barrier on US beef to prevent disease or contamination (as per the link).
Our PM is starting a $20,000,000 campaign to Buy Australian, as well as making partnerships with the United Arab Emirates and the European Union.
More than than just a shield against questions.Excellent description. I was wondering why the kid was being hauled out for public appearances and photo ops. Clearly, Musk was using him as a kind of human shield against questions shouted a him.
possibly an "old wound?".
Our MSM is calling the tariff list "Trump's naughty list". (Link)

And while Australia apparently got the "base rate" tariff of 10%, Trump is said to have "signalled" tougher barriers for our beef.
Maybe he doesn't like the way we check our beef for biohazards?
Australian beef undergoes rigorous checks for biohazards, including microbiological and chemical contamination, through a system of on-farm assurance, animal identification, and traceability, ensuring a safe and high-quality product.
How safe is Australian red meat to eat?
probably ship Chinese items through it....as with Vietnam and Singapore... but not to worry... soon there will be a big un-named uninhabited rock somewhere that will be an intermediate country. IMOWhat did poor little Sri Lanka do to deserve such a brutal tariff?
Irrational tariffs... Huge rates on Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and... Madagascar? Why?What did poor little Sri Lanka do to deserve such a brutal tariff?
not to worry... a few nice Chinese firms will be in tomorrow to rent the space and help out IMOAm seeing effects of withdrawal of USAID funding here in Colombia. We are obviously also a "-hole "country . Our NGO has never applied for USAID funds but am seeing others who work on human rights having to close programmes, reduce work force in 90% plus personnel and office space. This is not "force majeure" for insurance companies.
Will mean big payouts and losses on personnel contracts, rent of office etc.
Madagascar!!>.. that s where all the vanilla in the world comes from. the real stuff , that is.. lot of erstaz copying and faking, but good old Madagascar is the genuine goods. ah well all the more vanilla for ME.. the USA will have to stick with choco and strawberry.Irrational tariffs... Huge rates on Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and... Madagascar? Why?

Quite likely that Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, and probably Thailand will join up with China , Japan and South Korea, in their trading block. Anyone can foresee tbese alliances cementing and jacking up, and most certainly, be very successful at it. Trading is now a whole different game, same products, different customers, and different mates rates being developed. Of which, the USA will be left out of.Irrational tariffs... US tariffs take aim everywhere, including uninhabited islands
The world's remotest corners couldn't hide from US President Donald Trump's global tariffs onslaught Wednesday -- even the uninhabited Heard and McDonald Islands.Strings of ocean specks around the globe, including Australia's Cocos (Keeling) Islands and the Comoros off the coast of Africa, were...uk.finance.yahoo.com
Also very small islands. What is he (not) thinking?
Cocos has lots of really remarkable crabs, they have a set time when they suddenly emerge from the sand dunes and TAKE TO THE STREETS!!!.. . it's a horrifying sight if you have a crab phobia.Tariffs on uninhabited islands Heard and McDonald near Antarctica. This list is got madness written all over it. It is clearly the work of a committee, after a long boozy dinner and plenty of brandy to set things off. Possibly a few whiffs of cocaine. It is entirely devoid of logic and rationale, and it probably took 8 or 10 drunks to work it out..
He said little about the methodology behind those calculations, but a possible answer emerged later on Wednesday. Each country’s new tariff rate appeared to be derived by:
James Surowiecki, a financial writer and book author, first pointed out the trend in a post on X.
- Taking the trade deficit that America runs with that nation and dividing it by the exports that country sent into the United States.
- Then, because Mr. Trump said he was being “kind,” the final tariff number was cut in half.
