This is one of the strangest things I've read about the USA. Apparently individual states need federal government oversight before they respect the rights of all. The concern in closing the Federal Department of Education is that states will deny education to persons with disabilities.

What kind of dysfunctional society is this - where people around the country need force to educate all? Which states will deny education to persons with disabilities. They need to be named and shamed!

As long as the USA society refuses to respect the rights of their own citizens, they will never respect the rights of Canadians, Greenlanders, Panamanians, South Africans, Australians, New Zealanders, Ukrainians, and more.

"Trump signed an executive order on Thursday that aims to shut down the Department of Education, the federal agency that ensures states provide all children with equal access to schooling and oversees the $1.6 trillion US college student loan program.

While states have primary jurisdiction over the school systems in the U.S., including over curriculum, the federal department enforces compliance with laws that prohibit discrimination in education and administers funding aimed at boosting educational achievement.
...

Without federal enforcement of educational access laws, states will be free to decide that "kids who are blind, who are deaf, who have Down's syndrome, who have autism are too expensive to teach," said Keri Rodrigues, founding president of the National Parents Union."

The problem with a Federal Government with oversight of individual State Goverments has been a problematic issue before.

The US Civil War of 1860 was about the legality of Slavery. But it was also about the right of individual states to allow slavery in the face of other states that didn't. In October 1860, 11 states voted to secceed from the Union, and the Confederate forces fired on the US Fort Sumpter in South Carolina in 1861, with the beginning of bilateral military action.

So even 165 years later, the issue of individual State's autonomy is being used as a wedge to remove the oversight of the Federal Government.

Same thing with women's reproductive healthcare, gun rights, drinking age, marriage ages, even time zones.

While he has been cited as influential in getting Donald Trump re-elected as president of the United States again, he has made it clear that America needs to back off on increasing international tension with Canada.

“Why are we upset at Canada? This is stupid, this over tariffs,” Rogan said during the March 14 episode of his popular podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, while conversing with comedian Michael Kosta.

Canada will erect a series of “huge billboards” along highways in the U.S. as part of a campaign to sow public discontent with American tariffs, Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly told CNN Friday.

The billboards will appear in 12 “red states,” the minister said, which include Florida, Nevada, Georgia, New Hampshire, Michigan and Ohio.

Donald Trump is literally insane.

There’s just this gap between what the U.S. can supply and what their demand is,” said Kurt Niquidet, president of the B.C. Lumber Trade Council, the main trade group that represents the B.C. industry’s interests in the U.S.-Canada tariff dispute.

How strange. Seems like a bunch of misplaced targets and a very odd mix.

I'm not really seeing a cohesive theme here.

Nevada and Michichan aren't very red states. They're more purple

At least our food banks are benifiting
From the tariffs

Innis said as of Monday, Urban Grocer was no longer stocking any U.S. produce. Before that, he said it was donating large volumes of U.S. produce that was nearing its best-before date to local food banks.

Florida and Ohio are a bit of stretch nowadays, but the rest of them are pretty much the states you would want to flip if you wanted the Democrats to win the next Presidential election.

200 year old history shouldn't really matter today - especially since the USA government is relying on 100 year old history for destructive policy today. Forward looking is healthier.

Individual states should practice human rights, which should include the right to an education. Is the right to education not included in the USA constitution?

In Canada, provinces have always overseen education, but The Constitution and law provide firm boundaries. People with disabilities are entitled to an education without force by the federal government. It's mind-boggling that the importance of education is not a universal belief in the USA, and that individual states will deny education to some. It seems archaic, like denying women in the Middle East an education because they are women.

"In Canada, political and law-making power is shared by the provincial and federal levels of government, as set out in the constitution. Section 93 of the Constitution Act, 1867 gives the provincial governments the exclusive jurisdiction to make laws governing education. There is no federal department of education in Canada. Provincial governments are directly responsible for funding, legislating, regulating and co-ordinating education. Some of the sources of provincial education law are: education statutes, education regulations, ministry guidelines and policies; policies, procedures, protocols and by-laws; and common law or case law.

At both the federal and provincial levels, there are other areas of law that intersect with education. Among these are federal legislation such as the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA); Criminal Code; Divorce Act; and provincial legislation, such as the Human Rights Code; Occupational Health and Safety Act; Labour Relations Act; Child and Family Services Act; and Children's Law Reform Act. The Constitution Act, 1982 is the supreme law in Canada. All other provincial and federal laws must be consistent with the Constitution or they may be struck down as "unconstitutional." All education laws passed by the province must be consistent with the Constitution."

"Man kicks hornets nest then complains when hornets start stinging people."

Every day reveals new gigantic differences between the USA and Commonwealth countries, and more reasons that Canada needs distance from USA except for negotiated trade.

In Canada, education is a right. Provinces do not need federal government forcefulness to ensure equal education opportunities for everyone. In the USA, closing the Federal Education Department means that some states will deprive some people of education.

That tells us all we need to know about the USA, and gives Canadians 34 million reasons to protect sovereignty.

Why doesn't the USA implement federal law governing equal education for everyone, then shut down the Federal Department of Education. That solves the problem - but that's not what the USA government is doing.

"Section 29 ensures that the Charter does not infringe on education rights under section 93 of the Constitution Act, 1867 Section 15 of the Charter guarantees the right to equality without discrimination in all public services including educational services."

What they apparently say is that the chosen areas would be hardest hit by the tariffs. Maybe they are looking at places where important Canadian exports are most used or bought? IDK

The digital billboards read “Tariffs are a tax on hardworking Americans” and will be installed in Washington, D.C., and cities like Miami, Philadelphia, Detroit and Atlanta that Ottawa says would be “hardest hit” by the tariffs “due to their heavy reliance on trade with Canada.”

“We need to send a message to the American people for them to understand what’s at stake,” she said. “This is really going to hurt their livelihoods and have an impact on their wallets.

From the link - both of these decisions will damage habitat for wildlife.

"Reinstating a program that makes the entire 1.56-million-acre Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge available for oil and gas leasing.
...

"Revoking withdrawals along the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Corridor and Dalton Highway north of the Yukon River in order to convey these lands to State of Alaska."
