Very elegant and clever move of Carney to use French in some of his comments. It's a good callout to Francois Canada and France.

It further makes Trump look like a childish uneducated bully.
I can see how that would be the perception, but IMO it's essential for his credibility within Quebec - which is the second largest province in terms of population and wealth, and the largest in terms of territory.

The Liberals have the chance of winning it back, after decades of Quebec majorily voting for a party that wants to separate from Canada...

Mark Carney's official comment after his meeting with Trump this morning:

Upon becoming PM a couple of weeks ago Carney said he would not sit down with Trump unless he showed respect for Canada and its sovereignty. Yesterday Carney said that the economic and military relationship between the two countries and been 'irrevocably' been changed. Today Trump spoke respectfully about Canada and Carney (no "Governor", no 51st state talk). And Carney did not back down, standing firm on retaliatory tariffs based on actions by the US.

Well done Prime Minister Carney!! Professional, clear, statesman.

'They will represent us well, but Greenland is very important for the peace of the world. The piece of the entire world, and I think Denmark understands it. I think the European union understands it, and if they don't, we are going to have to explain it to them,'

IMO Trump will invade Greenland and declare it (ridiculously) a move towards world peace. All with Putin's blessing. It can't be about stealing valuable natural resources. Unfortunately I don't see the EU fighting back militarily.

I continue to be impressed by Carney!

Based on Vance's whining about the cold, I think Trump would wait until mid-summer.

He wouldn't want to have to have his victory photos taken in the cold. He'd be complaining about it not being as nice as Mar A Slaggo

I do believe Putin's recent statement that Trump was "serious about Greenland" as being his official approval for Trump to take military action.

Or at least that is how Trump would interpret Putin's statement.

I hope they do keep increasing their tariffs in response to Donald. Enough is enough.

Moo

I wish that they would also find other ways to manage the tariffs. Adding more tariffs on random US goods just increases the costs for Canadians. Removing US alcohol from the shelves was a good move. It's a non-essential product for us to import. Ending contracts with US owned businesses in red states is a good move.

I believe our high level economists have studied the situation and are fine tuning the response to DTs irrational tariffs. We can't merely respond in kind, because the US tariffs are so ridiculous.

I am so sorry, but I can't follow what you are trying to say. Who is "this guy", and who is "anonymous"?

I find it hard to imagine - the US has (in the modern era) invaded many countries for the purpose of regime change, but they eventually withdraw...eg Haiti (the first time to put in a leader, and then to take him out).

But to turn Greenland into a permanent US territory without the consent of the Greenlanders I think would be quite tricky. IMO it would require the complete eviseration of the UN: may as well declare it dead and hold the funeral.

The Panama Canal had some recent activity that is very curious.

A Hong Kong billionaire, Li Ka-Shing actually owned and operated two of the five ports along the the Panama Canal through the company CK Hutchison. CK Hutchison owned and operates 45 major ports across the world. They had owned Balboa and Cristobal ports in Panama since 1997.

CK Hutchison sold the two Panamanian ports as well as control interests in the other 43 ports for $22.8 billion USD cash to a US-based Blackrock, Inc consortium. The deal is to be finalized in April.

China has been hugely concerned about this purchase, and may try to block it. China has made substantial investments in South America and having some common interests as the Hong Kong businessman gave them some stability. China has issued a ban on dealing with the Li Ka-Shing family in any of it's operations.

Like Warren Buffet, Li Ka-Shing has turned significant assets to cash, and there are concerns this is a sign of a severe economic downturn.

OH INTERESTING DEVELOPMENT regarding Panama Canal

It looks like the CK Hutchison deal with Blackrock, Inc to buy the Panama Canal and other ports is now "delayed". This is perhaps not unexpected. The real question is what part does China play in this delay?

"Li’s flagship conglomerate CK Hutchison Holdings Ltd. likely won’t be able to sign a definitive agreement on the port sale by the original target of April 2, the people said, asking not to be identified because the information is private. Work on the deal is still progressing, but the companies need more time to complete formalities such as due diligence, according to the people."

Is Congress going to be OK with this? It all seems so odd. He could have just beefed up the base a little. All the threats and innuendo....

Under the United States Constitution, Congress holds the sole authority to issue formal war declarations. Since the nation's founding, Congress has exercised this power on a limited number of occasions.

He could also have had negotiations to legally purchase Greenland from Denmark.

Isn't his claim to be the best at property Deals?
