He could also have had negotiations to legally purchase Greenland from Denmark.
I think he dangled that as a possibility but the Danes said "not for sale." They said it several times.

btw who the heck is he so afraid of mister high and mighty...send the army to secure all your borders let no one in...your good...jat

I'm guessing between the tariffs and the USA getting rid of foreigners they have no workers . Some of the changes allowing kids to work over night just wow

“Why do we say we need to import foreigners, even import them illegally, when you know, teenagers used to work at these resorts, college students should be able to do this stuff,” - DeSantis

" ..... allowing children as young as 14 years old to work overnight shifts. If the new law is passed, teenagers would be able to work overnight jobs on school days."

Since when are 14-year olds college students?

They also can't legally drive. Are you going to expect 14 year olds to be bicycling back from their night jobs at factories in the middle of the night?

I wish that they would also find other ways to manage the tariffs. Adding more tariffs on random US goods just increases the costs for Canadians. Removing US alcohol from the shelves was a good move. It's a non-essential product for us to import. Ending contracts with US owned businesses in red states is a good move.

I believe our high level economists have studied the situation and are fine tuning the response to DTs irrational tariffs. We can't merely respond in kind, because the US tariffs are so ridiculous.

I think they could manage the tariffs by sourcing products from elsewhere and simultaneously bumping up tariffs on US products.

And maybe that is what they are doing?

I think that the reality of global warming is showing the northern Arctic is a feasible trade route after all, and a route that must be protected in a way that was not considered in the 20th century. During the 1800's and such it was just a frozen nightmare where there was a Northwest Passage, but it was an unreliable trade route.

I'd like to know how Trump came up with the idea of annexing Canada and Greenland. I have to think that somehow Putin gave him the idea. He should have propsed a Northern Arctic Association or something like that where there was a common interest and common ownership of the territory and routes, sort of along the lines of NATO to keep Putin out, without having to own the entire thing.

His faith in his ability to Deal is not a fruitful way to do global diplomacy. Trying to make secure neighbors capitulate by manipulating trade is unwarranted economic war.
I absolutely agree, the Canada, Greenland aggression were directed from Putin. I also understand Panama is building a super canal. I saw it when I went through the Panama Canal, 13 or so years ago. I'm wondering why no one talks about that canal. It was breathtaking! It is being built for the super tankers that can't go through the Panama Canal. IMO

The Independent

Trump warned automakers not to raise prices after his tariffs and be happy how ‘great’ they are

So, perhaps he has realized he made a big mistake with the shouty tariff stuff.

The average cost for new cars in the US has grown 25% in 5 years to a high of $48,150. People who are wanting small, fuel-efficient, less expensive cars are going to find a very competitive market as this share of US auto manufacturing has shrunk in favor of large, loaded high-margin trucks. The US EV market has also shrunk since the November elections and reducing the federal funding for chargin stations is not helping this at all. Wealthier people are less price sensitive, and will still be able to afford imported luxury vehicles.

Auto makers will have to raise prices if they are importing any auto parts. Aready, the used car market is surging, especially for highly-reliable brands such as Toyota, Lexus, and Honda. Not so much, yet, for Ford, GM, etc.

Not one economic analysis I have read expects the US auto manufacturers to expand or add jobs or new plants. They all fully expecting the cost of US autos to increase. Just as the costs for almost everything you can think of is going up, not down.

He is also teasing announcing pharmaceutical tariffs.

This would hit Ireland and India very badly, but will really hit the US consumers who depend on the really high-priced patented oncologics, biologics and immune-mediated drugs produced in Ireland.

Yes. This is going to hurt cancer patients, especially those who are dependent on not only Medicare but also Medicaid.

I think that canal opened in 2016.

The expanded canal began commercial operation on 26 June 2016.

Third Set of Locks Project, doubled the capacity of the Panama Canal by adding a new traffic lane, enabling more ships to transit the waterway, and increasing the width and depth of the lanes and locks, allowing larger ships to pass.

I find it hard to imagine - the US has (in the modern era) invaded many countries for the purpose of regime change, but they eventually withdraw...eg Haiti (the first time to put in a leader, and then to take him out).

But to turn Greenland into a permanent US territory without the consent of the Greenlanders I think would be quite tricky. IMO it would require the complete eviseration of the UN: may as well declare it dead and hold the funeral.

Somehow I don't think Trump respects the UN. Greenland has a small population compared to other countries. He threatened to displace the Palestinians to get his hands on their territory, so he won't have a problem doing it elsewhere, under the guise of improving their lives.

(Just jumping off your post)

Trump has spent about 9 years shouting Make America Great Again (after ripping off the Reagan/Bush campaign words from their 1980s campaign "Let’s Make America Great Again”). He has sold hats, sneakers, umbrellas, key chains ... all manner of things promoting MAGA.

Trump has campaigned on "America First".

He has ceased USAID.

No other country believes that he wants to improve their lives.
We are not indoctrinated like the MAGA people are.

imo

The US refused to exclude using military force in their quest to acquire Greenland. Vance stated today that he hoped the use of force won't be necessary and repeated Trump's promise of more security and better economic status under the US rule. Just hand over your valuable assets to us and we will protect you from a non-existent enemy. If you don't do that, we will help ourselves, because nobody can stop us.

His pretenses are for domestic consumption only. His followers believe him and will support his foolish foreign endeavors.
