The presence of bulky rucksacks does give some clue that the sisters were somehow on the move and not planning to end their lives. However, genuinely the area behind the path is full of overgrown bushes and a very high wall, and I don’t see how they could have cut through that. Behind that area is a long street with fish houses, car repair garages and storage, no side streets or places to hide. I’m reliably told there is a lot of cctv on that road due to break ins and any footage will have been studied. Especially recorded at 2am and in knowledge of what subsequently happened.

I am here because unfortunately in 2014 I discovered my sister was the subject of a Websleuth thread. She disappeared into thin air on January 21st. While desperately looking for anything I chanced on her name in this website. I was comforted that so many people were actively concerned, even out of simple curiosity….and perhaps finding leads that the police could not. It gave me great comfort. Sadly, her body was found two month later and the verdict was suicide, which the family had said from the start. I was at the sharp end, and know a bit about protocol after a person has been reported missing. MOO, but I do think this is either a terrible accident like Nicola Bulley, or a double suicide. Interestingly, my sister took a large rucksack when she left the house to end her life.

Sorry to hear about your sister! Sending love.

On page 3 of this thread there were lots of photos posted of the immediate area. It's worth a look if you haven't seen them yet. There has been demolition works ongoing on the same side of the road as the river path therefore some of the buildings seen on Google Maps are no longer there. There's a huge expanse of waste land and temporary fencing. Any fixed walls that may have been there previously are no longer there.

Yeah totally agree. If it's a possibility they did go that way then enter the water i hope it's been checked for belongings.
It would be a decent hiding spot if you were trying to evade someone or be picked up by a water vessel (which, imo is almost impossible due to harbour secutry and 24/7 operations, unless someone from industry was part of a plan).
I still say it's possible to leave the riverpath without being seen (going by what I saw in my visit there) but then there's the question of where they went after that if indeed that's what they did. Although, more often than not when someone goes missing by water they have indeed went into the water.
bbm
The girls couldn't be blind passengers on a cargo ship possibly?

I believe they would be also ,unlike 20 odd years ago where a friend in Aberdeen ( he was in IT ) was able to get on a ship fix what needed doing and get off without meeting a soul , different times.
Yeah, with the twin histories of terrorism and horrific human trafficking mass fatalities spurring change, ports are every bit as tight as airports, I believe.

MOO

I'm local too. I posted pictures near the beginning of this thread to show it is possible to get from the path to the street without being seen if that's what they wanted to do.
Ok. I stand corrected. My husband worked on South Esplanade West years ago and I was going on his description. I still think they would have been seen on cctv if they had come up to the road off the path after their last sighting.

I disagree that they were dressed up. They wore coats and scarves against the cold, and long pants. Shoes appear to me to be ankle boots and maybe brogues. Not sure what people expect them to be wearing. Track pants, pyjamas, no coats, slippers? I'd wear something like that if I went out in that weather. Unless they had reason to wear formal clothes, a uniform etc. it seems like something they'd wear to head out for snacks, leave fairly quickly etc.

A thought came to me - any chance they may have been heading for a hospital or 24 hour clinic in the area? Although why they wouldn't call a taxi/Uber I'm not sure. I assume one would be available at that time and location?

I do think, for whatever reason, they were dressed more smartly than in the previous CCTV image of them on the bridge earlier that day.

On the earlier image they are wearing hats, anoraks, rucksacks.

In the later they are wearing different coats and do look to be more formally dressed. A smarter choice of coat. Rather than a warmer choice, IMO.

In the later image no hats, despite no rise in temperature outside. Sometimes I don't wear a hat if I don't want to mess up my hair, it could indicate a desire to look nice. MOO.

It occurred to me that the rucksacks might have been for shopping, since they passed through the Union Square shopping centre on their way home. I often take a rucksack to the shops now that plastic bags cost money, and to carry heavy things like tins or bottles.

I also wouldn't wear a rucksack if I wanted to look 'smart'.

Looking at the photos, both of the twins are wearing the same jackets, and one twin is wearing exactly what they wore earlier in the day, with the exception of the back pack. The other does appear to be missing a cap from earlier but had the cross body. They look like they are wearing the same thing to me.

I know what you mean but I still have hope they'll find them. It can take weeks or longer sometimes to find people in the water, so it really hasn't been that long yet.
Some people are never found. This part of the river is extremely close to the sea. Literally, less than a mile the river mouth reaches the sea. If they went into the water they could literally have been swept out and be anywhere in the ocean.

I wonder if they used their scarves and coat belts to tie themselves together

Yes that's unfortunate it's so close to the sea. It's awful when families are left in limbo and never get closure.
Still hoping they do find them but I realise that it would require a lot of luck to find them in the sea.

The whole thing and it's sadness was brought home to me yesterday. I was out on a walk with some friends. We came back on a trail by our local river. As we got nearer to home we sat on a bench for a yap. This was next to the big bridge that spans the main road and river. Last night a couple of hours later a young woman jumped off it in the same spot despite the attendance of multiple emergency services. They couldn't stop her. I think she landed in the mud flats. At the moment it is not known if she survived. I have no idea what Aberdeen is like but down here MH services are virtually non-existent. You never know what someone is going through.

I believe they are the same also
