Smollett, who is openly gay, had alleged that two masked men attacked him at 2 a.m. on Jan. 29 as he was walking home from a Subway restaurant in Chicago.

He claimed that the men shouted racial and anti-gay slurs at him, poured a substance on him, threw a rope around his neck and shouted, "This is MAGA country!"

After reviewing surveillance footage, two brothers were arrested and released without charges.

Police say the investigation shifted after they questioned the brothers. Authorities said Thursday that Smollett spoke to two brothers an hour before and an hour after he says they helped the actor stage last month's attack, for which Smollett allegedly paid them $3,500 by check.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said police found the "check that [Smollett] used to pay [two brothers]" to fake the beating, adding he paid them $3,500 "for the two of them in total, and then $500 upon return."

He said the attack "was staged, the brothers had on gloves during the (air quotes) 'staged attack' where they punched him a little, but as far as we can tell, the scratching and bruising that you saw on [Smollett's] face was most likely self-inflicted.”

Smollett, who has a record — one that concerns giving false information to police when he was pulled over on suspicion of driving under the influence. According to records, he was also charged with false impersonation and driving without a license. He later pleaded no contest to a reduced charge and took an alcohol education and treatment program.

I agree. And if he had come forward—Mea Culpa made—-and apologized and explained the pressure and stress of being a young black gay man in the public eye and how he had s melt down—/I would have sympathized fully

They aren’t exactly complicated dots to connect, especially in light of what came a week later.

What do we know about the letter:

• words were cut out of fashion magazines
• those words were pasted onto a piece of paper
• the message on the paper was threatening
• the paper was mailed to Smollett's place of work (did he open the letter?)
• Smollett perpetrated a hoax to raise his salary (police reports)
• when the letter was ineffective, he staged an attack where he falsely described the suspects as Caucasian Republicans rather than buddies
• the FBI determined that the letter was sent from: ________
• FBI were able to obtain evidence from the letter: ________

Who had the fashion magazines? A gay man, his acting buddies? Are they all gay? Did Smollett give the body building actors the fashion magazines? Seems odd that a couple of straight body builders would like girly stuff.

Pure coincidence that his ridiculous “attack” was preceded with an equally absurd letter.

That’s one hell of a fantasyland he lives in.

That, or he thinks we’re all idiots.

I think Smolett's career as a relatively mainstream actor is over. Disney, who owns the Fox Movies branch won't want to risk any projects with him, he'll be uninsurable, and the promise of his career will be gone.

Harvey Levin has it right on that TMZ video: If he had plead to one of the lesser felonies, got 3 years probation, 200 hours community service, paid restitution, and be remorseful, then at the end of 3 years the plea deal would be expunged from his records and he could resurrect himself.

However, whatever his attorney's and the State Attorney's shenanigans did with this dropping of charges, with prejudice, and sealing the record and the hijinks with Jesse Jackson's library have cast a pall of malfeasance and external manipulation that will be the legacy now. Not to mention the open hostility between the mayor and police department and the Office of the State Attorney.

Smolett is the loser, but not in any sympathetic way.

He's toast. Move to NYC. Find some unknown directors willing to take a chance on him. Try to stay below the media radar.

But never ever again to have the endorsement of a major media player like the Disney Media. And because of that always be poison to the major projects that he likely thought he deserved.

The brothers’ attorney Gloria Schmidt said her clients were telling the truth and were prepared to do so in court.

Schmidt said she was baffled by the decision to drop charges against Smollett.

“I was shocked. I couldn’t believe it,” Schmidt said. “For the State’s Attorney’s office to drop it completely, and not consult with the victim, and with the complaining witnesses, and the key witnesses in this case, I think is baffling.”

Also didn’t consult with the police chief, mayor, or the Feds.

That’s what typically happens when you aren’t proud of what you are about to do.
