This is purely heresay that was taken from a BE video and article, but apparently the sheriff had a very public issue with the feds over a decade ago. I don't recall any further details but it was a case of feds working with SO and it got very ugly and very public. The former Undersheriff suggested that was part of his motive.
You are probably referring to the investigation over Congresswoman Gabby Giffords shooting in Tucson in 2011. The PCSO investigated with FBI support and ultimately found the perpetrator who is now in federal prisona for life. Sheriff was Clarence Dupnik, PC Sheriff since 1980. His chief deputy was the current sheriff, or maybe his predecessor who was later fired and replaced by Nanos. Gabby is the wife of Senator Mark Kelly who has been mentioned upthread. I had mutual close personal friends with Gabby at the time and had met her a few times.

I don't recall any serious rifts with the PCSO and FBI that became public. Dupnik took some heat when he called for political civility at the time as I recall.

Pima County does not have Undersheriffs as far as I know.

Link: Just personal recollections as a resident with close connections to the victim at the time.

But this guy isn't just a stranger in a mask abducting an old lady from her home. He is a stranger in a mask who evidently sent untraceable emails to various media outlets demanding a substantial ransom be paid to a cryptocurrency account. A stranger in a mask who has not only avoided capture and arrest due to an obvious lack of identifying physical evidence at the scene, but also a stranger in a mask who has avoided capture and arrest due an obvious lack of identifying digital evidence online, which is pretty remarkable by today's investigatory standards.

At 12-13 days in, I'd say he has thus far committed a 'hot shower with pumice loofah' crime. But perfectly clean? That remains to be seen. Unfortunately I kind of like his odds without an obvious and identifying mistake so far.

JMO.
It may be that the guy (or group) who abducted NG are different from the people who sent the ransom demands.

A glove found more than a mile away from Nancy's property is not exactly laying around her house.
I'm talking about the one they found inside the house.

Have you seen that video from Ring Neighbors?

That man looks similar to the POI in the videos released by LE imo.

Spotted by a neighbor's camera in Tucson on 01/23/26:
"This guy appeared in front yard about 3:30 am and then returned about 5:00 am. My dogs went crazy barking and thankfully spooked him away. I didn’t answer the door. Anyone else see him in area of 6th between Campbell and Tucson blvd?"
The guy in that Ring video looks scary. He must have been bending so he couldn't be seen through the peephole. Has a big tattoo on his neck.
He looks similar to the composite, this Houston sketch artist drew up, from Nancy's porch surveillance.

Right. The ransom letters may have all been opportunists.

Yes, but the probable cause to get a warrant for a sample is based on very weak evidence imo. I'm not saying it should be outlawed, just that I think most decisions judges are making about it are based on ignorance or outright misrepresentation by prosecutors.

It's kind of like :

Your honor, most white guys drink. We believe xxx drinks because his father has a dui.

We'd like to stop and test xxx based on his genetic connection to a criminal.

Now, the thing is, in that situation the judge is likely to see through the argument. But throw in DNA...
I think in such cases they can get a sample from a public place, eg discarded coffee cup, etc, no need for warrant.

How do we know DC, the hoaxer, was a hoaxer? Could he have been the masked intruder or one of a team?

DC lives in California and was tracked down very quickly by the FBI because the way he tried to cover his tracks was sloppy. FBI probably checked his activity around the time of the kidnapping when they arrested him. If there was a connection, we'd know at this point and the case would be looking very different.

Oh…wow….absolutely can see the resemblance to the POI (as much as we can tell with a mask and different angles.)

Please tell me that neighbor has sent this in to LE

Yet they're clearly not bothered about showing their face. Does anyone know what the crime rate is in this area of AZ?
This is within spitting distance of the university. It’s called the Sam Hughes historical district. Spotty but expensive due to proximity to school. Not close to Catalina foothills. Not sure if you mean crime rate of Tucson or this specific area but generally there would be more crime in this area (also closer to downtown and south Tucson which is considered less desirable) than in Catalina foothills.

The beard is so similar to what I imagined on the perp. The man in this video looks taller, but creepy close. He definitely looks unprepared without a mask and bag, but I hope they look into this guy further. It’s actually so scary that this kind of thing is happening with creepers coming up to doors!

Everyone is saying “neighbor” but this is pretty far from NG. Much closer to the U of A where there’s a lot more foot traffic and a homeless population. Crime rate is much higher in this part of town than the foothills. MOO
Agreed. Posted similarly. Super cute neighborhood though :)

The ring video footage from 1/23, was that posted since FBI made the request or was it posted beforehand? It looks like it was posted back on the 23rd. I’m surprised it wasn’t already looked into.

From what I've seen, the last public message from the Guthrie siblings to the "kidnapper" was when SG said that they will pay. How does this relate to what actually happened payment-wise? If no payment was made, do we know why that statement was made?

That's what I can't figure out. There's supposed to be an attempt at proof of life, or at least a body; payment, then resolution. But this process has continually stalled and aborted. Without explanation.

Well, Harvey what'isface TMZ has said money did go into the crypto wallet but won't divulge amount (there were reports elsewhere that it was around 300$) but...

For all we know, different BC wallet details could have been provided another way and the wallet info provided in ransom demand sent to TMZ could've been a decoy

Do you know roughly how far? Google is giving me conflicting info

Even if they’re not super close, could still be worth it for the homeowner to send in. There really does appear to be a resemblance, as much as we’re able to tell from not super high quality videos at night and one with a mask

That area is farther south than Nancy's neighborhood. The crime rate is higher in the area where this video was taken.
