Shooting reported near White House

  • #81
We know he settled in Washington state, and that was his last known address (I've heard Bellingham). It doesn't appear he moved to DC, so at this point it looks like he probably traveled there. I'm sure we'll have some clarity in the coming hours.

My state. Bellingham, a college city to the North. The way he looks, he definitely needs to be tested for substances. Nothing else known yet. JMO.

More from John Miller. Immigrated to Washington State in 2021 as part of the program to bring Afghans who helped the US into the country.
Oh wow, @justtrish called that one super accurately

''Rahmanullah Lakanwal’s arrival in the US under Operation Allies Welcome has become a central point of scrutiny. The federal resettlement programme was created to support Afghan allies and evacuees following the Taliban takeover. Reports suggest Lakanwal overstayed his visa after entering the country and was living unlawfully in the United States.

Law enforcement sources told the newspaper that Lakanwal had waited near the Farragut West Metro Station before launching the attack at around 2:15 pm local time. He allegedly rounded the corner and opened fire at close range, first striking a female National Guard member in the chest and then shooting her in the head. He then reportedly turned his weapon on the second guard, firing multiple rounds until a third guard stationed nearby intervened and brought him down.''

At a press conference this morning, US Attorney for DC Jeanine Pirro said the two West Virginia National Guard members shot yesterday have gone through surgery and are still in critical condition. She identified them as Andrew Wolfe & Sarah Beckstrom.

According to a former Afghan commando who spoke with CBS News on Thursday, Lakanwal led a unit of Afghan special forces in the south of the country and worked closely with the international troops.

The former commando told CBS News that Lakanawal was left deeply troubled by the death of a close friend and fellow Afghan commander in 2024, whom he said had unsuccessfully sought asylum in the U.S.

There is a photo of the shooter just a few posts above yours. I'm going to see if replying to it posts it below this message.

Interesting post from this news anchor.

"SO WHEN DID HE BECOME RADICALIZED? Rahmanullah Lakanwal worked for the CIA in Afghanistan out of Kandahar base, according to CIA director John Ratcliffe. Multiple sources tell FOX, he was vetted before working with the CIA by the NCTC (National Counterterrorism Center) and the CIA. FOX says Lakanwal was with the Task Force in Kandahar. During the Afghan withdrawal, the CIA airlifted with the help of the US military many Afghan allies who had worked with the US government and took special care of those who were badged and worked with the agency. They were taken to bases in Qatar and Europe and then onward to military bases in the US where further vetting was supposed to take place. Having a CIA ID would have put him in the “vetted” category. FOX is told there was nothing in his background when he arrived in the US on Sept 8, 2021 that suggested links to terrorism"

Officials said at the Thursday press conference that Lakanwal drove across the country from his home in Bellingham, Washington, to DC before he fired at the troops on Wednesday afternoon with a .357 revolver.

Could have been the anniversary of his friend's death? Would be helpful to know how the friend died. Did the Taliban kill him and his family? Or natural death? Obviously something set RL off and DC was the place to get attention, it wasn't just anti military. Washington state has its own military population, he could have done it there.

Imo

“Prior to his 2021 arrival in the United States, the suspect worked with the U.S. government, including the CIA, “as a member of a partner force in Kandahar,” John Ratcliffe, the spy agency’s director, said in a statement. He did not specify what work Lakamal did, but said the relationship “ended shortly following the chaotic evacuation” of U.S. servicemembers from Afghanistan.”

Interesting. Maybe a visa issue that he was feeling betrayed over?

Seems there may be a bit of confusion right now. Hoping for the best case scenario
This was so upsetting! I can't imagine how family/friends must have felt if they heard/read the initial report from the Governor who claimed the two National Guardsmen were deceased. I was shocked and saddened when I saw a live news report with the claim.

Was the friend's DOD July 10, 2024?

Could this be Lakanwal? Log into Facebook

ETA: Given the recent comments on the photo, this is definitely Lakanwal. Interesting comments btw. MOO JMO

ETA: There’s a comment from this Lakawanal saying he’s not the shooter, but… the pics on the profile look exactly like the same guy. Kinda sus... MOO JMO

Hoping and praying the two young people, National Guard, will survive !!!!
Only 20 and 24 years old.
So sorry this is a sad and anxious day for their worried loved ones instead of a holiday, a time to gather together for families.

Looks like the two guardsmen represent two branches of the military, with Wolfe being an airman in the U.S. Air Force and Beckstrom being a soldier in the U.S. Army. Praying that they survive and praying for their loved ones on this Thanksgiving Day.

He might have felt betrayed over a visa that didn't materialize for someone else, but he himself received asylum in April 2025 from the present administration. So he wasn't here illegally.

This post is not directed at you, just bouncing my thoughts off of your post.

He attempted to murder two federal officers in walking distance of the White House. The motive may have been personal grievances related to immigration or maybe it was radicalization, but I think it is more likely that he was a failure in the U.S. and was full of hate when he decided to attempt to murder members of our military. An ingrate of the highest order.

ETA Edited to say "attempted murder."

Unless news has just been announced. So far no one has died. But I agree that it must be overwhelmingly tough to make it in the states, five young kids. Very different climate in Bellingham vs Afghanistan. Whether or not the communities have open arms. How to support 7 people.

______
"U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro announced the charges Thursday morning, adding that the shooter faces 15 years under the charge of assault with the intent to kill. Additional charges may be filed if the guardsmen — currently in critical condition at a local hospital — succumb to their injuries."

I have corrected my post to say "attempted" murder. Hope it stays that way and these young Guardsmen survive.
