“There are calls for seven British cave divers to be knighted after they helped to save a trapped group of Thai schoolchildren.

Rick Stanton and John Volanthen were the first divers to reach the group nine days after they went missing in the underground network in northern Thailand.

The pair were joined by one of the world's leading cave divers Jason Mallinson plus four others who had flown to the region to assist at the request of Thai authorities.

After gruelling efforts, the last of the Wild Boars football team were brought to safety yesterday and taken to hospital.”

Thailand cave diver's mum says she is 'incredibly proud' of son | Daily Mail Online

I hope the U.K government does this. Honours should be given to brave individuals like this.

I wonder if the boys will be tuning into the remainder of the World Cup, not that it is important info whether they are or not, but I imagine they would want too.

Love Love Love these happy, healthy video's of the boys in the hospital. Thailand did it right.

I've been here (Websleuths) 6 years, since Sierra Lamar's case back in 2012. This has been by far my favorite thread. Such an incredible story. It's been wonderful following along with the rest of you, and getting to know each other. I hope we can watch more miracles unfold here in the future. You all are a great group of people! HUGS:p

Corbella: Calgarians vital to the rescue of Thai soccer team

“.....Patrick Blott, Intermap’s CEO, said the company — which has all Canadian-led teams around the world — was able to give the first 3-D maps of the cave area within three hours of getting called by Thai agencies seeking help......

.....Using sensors — such as microwave, radar wave, infrared and gravitational field technology — that collect information the human eye can’t see, Intermap was able to provide rescue teams with precise information of an area that had never been properly mapped before, including how deep and wide the cave was, where the water entry and exit points were, and what happens if there is a storm surge.

The company was even able to predict where the boys might have been sheltering themselves — a muddy slope rising many metres above the water, where they were able to stay dry.....”

Just adding a Canadian contribution to the rescue efforts. What amazing things can be accomplished when talent from every country joins to work together!

Hi, still on WS sanity break but had to post these, sorry if repost.

Thai cave rescue: Navy Seals say mission came 'close to disaster'

"When the boys’ bikes were first discovered outside the cave, rescuers initially thought the mission to find the children would be straightforward. They learned otherwise a few days into the search when heavy rain filled the cave faster then expected, forcing even navy personnel to retreat.

"“We fought and were defeated, losing space to the water,” said Narongsak Osatanakorn, head of the joint command centre coordinating the operation.

Navy Seals began deep forays into the cave but were hindered by the muddy conditions, narrow paths and high water levels. “The cave was unlike anything we had ever experienced, it was so dark,” said Apakorn Youkongkaew, a rear admiral in the Thai navy."

Snip

"Talented and resilient..."

Snip

"So challenging were the conditions that, for 23 hours, the Seals lost contact with two teams they sent into the cave, he said.

A week into the search their efforts to pump rain water out of the cave were proving fruitless. They called for heavier-duty equipment and a contingent of expert cave divers from the UK, Australia, China, US and Europe.""

*also I watched the full pc on youtube last nignt, must watch in entirety, or read full transcript of available, if you haven't already:

Well, thave not been able to find out what happened, to Dr. Harris' father, but have seen "complete and unexpected shock" and, "was not sick when he left" on the mission.
And they all indicate it was after the successful mission.
Well, I kept holding Saman Kunan's widow in my thoughts all day yesterday, now I will be thinking of "Harry", today, too. :(
I wish he were able to simply revel, relieved in the joy of his own incredible, unprecedented task. I'm still wishing his father knew what a true hero his son had become that day.
“Harry”, as he is known in the global caving community, cancelled a planned holiday and jetted in to northern Thailand as part of the international team trying to get the youngsters out of the Tham Luang cave.
<...>
"The circumstances of his father’s death are not known, but Mr Pearce said he was not sick when his son left on his dangerous mission.
<...>
“It is with great sadness that I confirm that Harry’s dad passed away last night a short time after the successful rescue operation in Thailand,” said Andrew Pearce, head of clinical services at SAAS MedSTAR, where Mr Harris works.
I wonder where the was going to on holiday?
Half of me expects it was to go cave diving else where?
Thai cave rescue hero emerges to family tragedy - Khmer Times

"It is with great sadness that I confirm that Harry’s dad passed away last night a short time after the successful rescue operation in Thailand.

"I have spoken with Harry. This is clearly a time of grief for the Harris family, magnified by the physical and emotional demands of being part of this week's highly complex and ultimately successful rescue operation.

"He will be coming home soon and taking some well-earned time off to be with his family. He has asked that the family's privacy is respected at this time."

Dr Pearce said the death of Dr Harris' father was a "complete, unexpected shock".

"Harry put the mission first, look after the rest of the team and the people he was over there to do," he said.

"Now he's having to come home to deal with what actually happened overnight."

We're okay! Thai cave boys smile and wave from hospital beds as footage emerges of their daring rescue and new details of operation are reveale

Thai cave boys 'dived in zero visibility for half an hour at a time' | Daily Mail Online

A single still shot from Thai TV news, of one of the boys in the hospital.

Also, video of operations in the cave. (I think it was already released before.)

ETA corrected "tunnel" to cave (still in a stupor I guess!)

Reading this just really drives it home. This was no easy rescue (not that anyone thought it was). It's truly miraculous they pulled this off. They dragged half- or unconscious kids through the pitch dark under water because otherwise they would die for sure. I start hyperventilating just thinking of it. So very very glad to see them in their safe clean hospital beds. These rescuers did the impossible.
