I've already told my hubby that if this turns out to be a months-long ordeal, then I will go there to volunteer. I can't dive, but just to do anything I can...
distribute water, wash laundry, serve food...
Not sure about cleaning the latrines, though.

But, I wanna help!

More pumps aren't going to help at this time.

In the meantime, crews continued drilling into the south side of the cave complex on Friday to reduce the water level. It’s estimated to take an additional 12 to 18 hours to penetrate approximately 200 meters of rock. Drilling on the north side was suspended, as engineers and geologists work to find an alternate location closer to the stranded group.
According to the document, pumping operations have not been able to significantly lower the water level deep within the cave network. Rescue crews have assessed that the ongoing effort to pump water out from the main entrance of the cave has reached a point where it’s becoming less and less effective, and placing pumps further inside the cave -- beyond the 800 meter mark, where they currently are -- does not seem possible.

This situation is bad. Really bad.

It’s my understanding that the boys do not know how to swim, is that correct? So they want to teach them all how to swim (while they are stressed and physically weak, at a minimum) then have them swim for 5 hours straight through this cave that claimed the life of a very experienced and physically fit technical diver who was also a former SEAL?

Have y’all seen this footage yet?

Bringing this forward, these boys.

Eta: if these boys don’t make it out this video will haunt me/is for the rest of my our life/lives.

Do we have a list of all their names, ages? I’m going to go back to the beginning a make sure I’ve read every post.
Yes - some lovely person posted a list of their names on the first thread -- I shall try to find it. ❤️

Noting the relevant experience of these engineers, Musk added on Twitter that The Boring Co. "is pretty good at digging holes." (The company aims to alleviate traffic congestion in big cities by establishing a network of tunnels.)

Fantastic. They can solve traffic congestion problems. What does that have to do with getting the kids out? This is a rural area. Not a lot of traffic congestion there. If he was serious about helping he should have offered it weeks ago. He's just looking for publicity IMHO.

Thank you.

Been having trouble with site loading, meant to post this earlier, not sure if it went through, sorry if repost:

"In the late 1970s, Wilson and others rescued a group of college students in Kentucky under somewhat similar circumstances. The students went into a dry cave that, after a heavy rain, became filled with enough water to block their way out. Eventually, all of the students were rescued after divers kept them well stocked with blankets and food."

Proposed ‘buddy dive’ plan to rescue boys in Thai cave could launch this weekend

"According to an internal U.S. government report obtained by ABC News, the Royal Thai Navy, supported by divers from the United Kingdom, the United States and other nations, has briefed Thai military leadership, interior ministry officials and the provincial governor on a proposed operation to evacuate the 12 boys and their coach from the miles-long cave in Chiang Rai province, alongside experienced divers in what is being called a “buddy dive.” Thailand’s prime minister will be briefed on the proposal Saturday morning local time."

Everyone read, must read article, has latest plan:

I think the pumping is still making a big difference, in one of the videos that auto played after one just up thread, they said at the start they were getting the water down by something like an inch a day and now it’s several inches per hour. And that (I guess because of the lowered water level) today was only taking 3 hours each way whereas at the beginning it was 11 hours round trip.

I have no idea which video it was, I was cooking dinner and listening.

"If approved, the first phase of the plan -- which involves the ongoing process of staging equipment and clearing obstacles in the cave -- could be completed by 6 p.m. local time Saturday. The second phase – which calls for dangerous and risky “buddy diving” of the soccer team out of the cave network – could start as early as Sunday morning local time.

U.S. dive and medical personnel will support the proposed operation by staging equipment and setting up triage stations, but will not go beyond the third chamber inside the cave, according to the document."

I’m sure he is sending some of the geotechnical engineers. They don’t just solve traffic problems.

Geotechnical engineering is the branch of civil engineering concerned with the engineering behavior of earth materials. Geotechnical engineering is important in civil engineering, but also has applications in military, mining, petroleum and other engineering disciplines that are concerned with construction occurring on the surface or within the ground. Geotechnical engineering uses principles of soil mechanics and rock mechanics to investigate subsurface conditions and materials; determine the relevant physical/mechanical and chemical properties of these materials; evaluate stability of natural slopes and man-made soil deposits; assess risks posed by site conditions; design earthworksand structure foundations; and monitor site conditions, earthwork and foundation construction”

Elon tends to do quite a bit when he is able to help. He can get publicity tons of other ways. He may have thought they had it under control a few weeks ago. Better late than never!

“The oxygen level within the cave was most recently measured at 17.5 percent. Though higher than the previous reading, it is still significantly below the normal range of 20 to 21.5 percent.

Rescue crews have also determined that it’s impractical to bring into the cave the necessary amounts of food and supplies that are required to sustain the boys and their coach before the oxygen levels drop to fatal levels or the water level rises. Divers can only bring in small amounts of supplies at a time.”

Thai officials rule out immediate rescue attempts - CNN
Updated 7:38 PM ET, Fri July 6, 2018

"Chiang Rai, Thailand (CNN)Thai officials ruled out any immediate attempts to evacuate 12 football players and their coach trapped deep inside a system of caves in northern Thailand on Saturday despite concerns over low oxygen levels underground and poor weather forecasts.

"No, not today," Narongsak Osottanakorn, the governor of Chiang Rai province, said early Saturday after being pressed by reporters on rescue efforts.
On Friday, Thai Navy SEAL chief Rear Adm. Aphakorn Yoo-kongkaew said oxygen levels in the cave had dropped to 15%, a level that one Thai medic said posed a serious risk of hypoxia, the same condition that causes altitude sickness."
