Water reaches near entrance of Thai cave where 13 missing

Muddy floodwaters have reached near the entrance of a Thai cave despite attempts to drain the water so rescuers can search farther into the complex for 12 boys and their soccer coach now missing for a sixth day.

Rescuers are trying to find hidden shafts in the green mountainside to access different parts of the cave, while crews also are working to drill wells that could drain the water, which would allow divers to advance into passages filled with water at or near their ceilings. Despite the hard work, rescuers’ progress was fitful at best, with no guarantee the water will soon recede with months left in Thailand’s rainy season.

The team trying to find a way to drain the water dug until 1 a.m. to a depth of 30 meters (98 feet) but did not find any wells, said Ekchawin Longpinit from the Thai Underground Water Department. About a dozen workers were drilling at the same spot Friday morning. “We will continues to drill today, and more drill equipment is being sent so we can also explore” more spots to drill, Ekchawin said.

Latest tweets say, still no rain. Crossing fingers!

They also have a helicopter out flying over the mountain to look for possible shafts that could give access.

Hope the rain would not drop until they're done.

I hope it is true that they all brought some food along. If they have food and some liquids, they should be able to hang in there awhile longer....

I am pretty sure that the food would have run out, but people can survive for five days without food, and the water is, although muddy, fresh water. Also, if they are in a higher chamber, there probably would be fresh, clean water running down the walls of the cave.

From what I see on Twitter SEAL has been able to access chambers today that they hadn't been able to get to before.
They should find them soon, right?

UPDATE 1-Unable to find lost boys, Thai police drop survival...

As a search in northern Thailand for 12 boys and their soccer coach missing inside a flooded cave entered a sixth day on Friday, police began dropping survival packages through a shaft drilled in the mountainside not knowing if anyone was there.

If the children find this box we want them to float the box out of the cave,” Police Colonel Kraiboon Sotsong, commander of the police’s strategic office, told reporters.

“The note says: ‘If received, then reply and show on the map where you are. Everybody will quickly help.”
