Totally , imagine all the people who have contaminated that area in the past week !! .
Doubt it's because of being a crime scene, probably found something and don't want passerbys

I wonder if they will announce a press conference now they have taken the steps to cordon the area off (far too late in my opinion)

When the camera zooms in you can see the diver walking to shore though - and that is right under where the bench is. So still struggling to see how she could have drowned by accident in there without a stunningly unlucky series of events occurring

geelongcate:
One thing that puzzles me is how the police can distinguish between an accident in which she ended up in the water, and an attack in which she ended up in the water. I get that an abduction is fairly unlikely because of the difficulty in getting her away from that location without being seen, but an assault in which she fell in the water during the struggle surely wouldn't look all that different to an accident. At any rate, for her to leave her phone behind means that whatever happened must have been quite sudden and unexpected.

The police/coroner look for defence injuries, under the fingernails. They can tell if someone has been punched or hit with something. If she has had an accident and tumbled in and she has been in the water all this time, it will be harder for them to know how she died, but if she hit her head on the way down, they will know. This happened to my sister who disappeared on a dog walk. The exact details of how she ended up in a river are unknown to this day - did she fall, was she pushed, did she come upon someone? We will never know and I hope Nikki's parents don't have to live with that, but I fear that they will.

Family members can't be sleuthed. Just a heads up.

So they are reporting on here that the section of river they are looking in is 18ft deep!! I dread to think if she got caught up underneath in some brambles and she has been there the whole time. Why weren’t the divers brought in sooner? JMO

I definitely saw underwater searching in previous reports, but maybe these are different? If there is a deep undercut I think it may need specialists.
Thanks I did wonder why they wouldn’t have done it sooner since the river has always been their main focus.

Or do they now have some sort of evidence that a crime has been committed? Wouldn't they have tents up if they had found her?
Yes.

I wonder if they may have found small evidence that they think might be relevant. Glove, tissue, hat, etc.

Despite all this new development I have also seen it say 18 inches deep. I honestly think that must be a typo. A 18ft hole in a 2ft river would get silted up pretty quick if it did exist.

Would love to know which part of that is 5 metres deep. somehow I cant see it in that area at all.

It must be deep enough for a specialist diver so it's clearly not 18 inches.

So the area which is the deepest happens to be closest to the bench? I would have thought that would have been the first and most obvious area to search. Getting a bad feeling about this.

The police waders towing the boat were in up to their waists, so I'm guessing it won't be much more than that around the next bend either.

Eh, silted up water with overhangs or deep soft mud? They'd put a diver into that if they had to. Hands and eyes are better than robots sometimes. Plus a diver doesn't for sure mean scuba gear or deep diving. Hell it could be bloke on wetsuit and snorkel

I suppose if that depth is true and someone were to be weighed down with something they might be hard to find without specialists. But surely the initial searches would have discovered a deep section...?

I'm so sorry to hear about your sister, my heartfelt thoughts go out to you, there are just too many people who end up in the rivers & canals mysteriously, with no proper explanations, it must be torture for the families.. x

Breaking news:- A police cordon by the river.

Sadly I suspect they've found her.

It just reads that they have cordoned off the area. Surely that means they now realise that too many people have been there, in case its needed for forencics? JMO MOO

A diver means a diver. Sub-aqua, with breathing apparatus.
Anything else is a water searcher.
