It used to be much easier to fake a new identity, which could be desired for many reasons including running away from the law or personal issues.. If I recall the general idea of how it worked back then, you find a young child's grave roughly the same age and get the birth date from the...
She apparently came from behind the stopped truck. She would not have seen that it was DS truck from that angle, only when going beside or looking back - where there would have been little light to see.
Trucks stopped on the road/roadsides are more common in farming country like this, though the...
If he worked in Columbus, The Plains is a little closer than Athens but still a long commute. Plus Athens, especially back then, was pretty much Ohio University. Many county residents not part of the university system lived outside Athens city.
I lived in Athens for about 6 years, college and...
Hillard is a western suburb of Columbus. Lots of hotels. It’s right along a major interstate (I-70) and the western intersection with the outer belt (I-270).
Hilliard was populous and growing suburb back then and still growing today.
DS would have been an independent trucker.
David would have been one of those small independents. He owned his own truck. Only the trailer was corporate owned.
My uncle was a short haul drive like DS. Only my uncle hauled construction materials. He made it a point to be in line early in the morning for the first load because without fail things got behind on the loading or receiving ends of the trip, the trucks stacked up, and he made no money sitting...
First thing that would happen in that case would be truck flashers put on. Second the truck would be left idling unless instructed otherwise. It takes little fuel to idle a diesel so they are kept running in situations where a person might shut off a car.
Could be quite dark, but there would be reflectors on the truck and trailer that would be visible when a car approached. That's probably why the friend almost hit the truck, rather than actually hitting it.Even licence plates are generally reflective now.
But that wouldn't be any light for...
There would be something to gain from saying there was an argument if it didn't happen.
It gives an appearance of motive. Maybe someone was redirecting attention away from them or their group.
Some thoughts (my opinions):
1. Why he has two trucks. Many parts were very hard to get during and even now after COVID. My neighbor's car was totaled when it normally would not have been. But the insurance company told her it could take months to get the parts and the extended rental cost...
As I understand it, she came from behind the truck. So she’d see the trailer. Unless she looked at it as she passed or in the rear view mirror, she wouldn’t notice the cab portion. Just the trailer portion which would look like so many other trailers.
it is very expensive to fuel these trucks. If he stopped for fuel, where he stopped may depend on what card he uses to pay. Many don’t use a Visa/Mastercard but may have an account with a station/chain.
There is no way a trained truck driver would stop in a situation, even a forced stop like that and not put on the emergency flashers. It's just second nature to them.
My opinion is if some criminal enterprise wanted to kill him, it would have been far easier to find a place for a quick drive by shooting than luring him to another location. And there would have to be a reason for Ray to cover his tracks so well for this trip.

The phone may not have been turned off, but in airplane mode. The display would still be on, but the phone would not send/receive or be trackable.
If he knew, for example, that his husband could track the phone that might be a reason to use airplane mode.
