NY - UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson fatally shot in Midtown. #4

I think he felt he would get another chance (BT would probably go back to his hotel the same way he came, on foot and alone) and was getting ready to just be prepared for action at any point in time, not necessarily 5 minutes after getting there.

Unless he didn’t have any specific target and wanted just to shoot someone important, and that BT was this someone was just a coincidence.
I think the timing was all incredibly preplanned. This was shooter’s one and only chance (had a getaway, knew what train he needed to get on, where the bike was planted, etc) and it seems he was confident in knowing exactly when BT would be on the move. He knew his Starbucks stop would not mess up timing. IMO.

There are several people that could have a motive:

Wife- Sure, the motive could be there based on fear of him losing his job and assets but given that he had not been charged of any crime at the time of the murder, I do not think she had any involvement in this.

Disgruntled ex-employee or UHC client- I agree with previously mentioned thoughts on this. The pictures and videos do not look like someone that was irate or distraught. It looks like someone carrying out a job to me. He remained cool, calm, and collected the entire time, and I would have expected this kind of suspect to act more impulsively. There was too much planning involved, and the cost of this 10+ day adventure just does not fit either of these suspect types to me.

Ransomware attackers- Maybe, but why choose to murder someone this time? What else do they need to gain?

Who has something to lose right now?

I feel like it would be more likely for it to be someone that was impacted by the insider trading scandal. I strongly feel like someone inside of UHC wanted him dead. The suspect could have shot someone else in the 5-minutes waiting outside, but it was meant for BT. Even if he were walking from next door, given that he has been receiving death threats, I feel like the suspect had to know he would not have security with him, and I feel like he was tipped off on the call. If the suspect were expecting an entourage of security detail, he would have chosen a different style of weapon, like an automatic one, IMO. One of my friends works in a large corporation and was shocked that BT did not have security and said that their buildings are so protected by security, that you cannot even access the C execs floors as an employee. It seems like BT would have extra security given the threats and travel.

Look at the others being investigated and look up their annual compensation packages compared to BT’s. If you were wanting to send a message to UHC specifically, would you have chosen BT or the highest paid? If BT was not as involved or had an opportunity to make a plea deal, someone with more to lose would have the biggest motive I would believe. I looked up the meanings of “depose” and the first two things that come up are “Remove from office suddenly and forcefully; testify or give evidence on oath.”

I have been back and forth on the type of suspect, but I am leaning more towards calculated and professional. One of the videos looks like he just places the trash there to be found. With that big of a backpack, he could have put his trash in the bag. Leaving one thing behind, okay, a mistake, but so much “evidence” being found? I do not think this was careless, but the suspect wanted to leave a trail of “evidence” behind to throw LE off and give him more time to escape. The suspect almost looks like he has a slight limp in his left leg and does not look like he is a pro at riding an electric bike. I believe he took his mask off and smiled because he was asked to, and he would have looked more suspicious if he did not comply. We’ve seen him walking, biking, riding a bus, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he came off a boat or plane from somewhere else either.

IMO

Bbm.

Am wondering the same ?
Omo.
We haven’t been told definitively, but in my speculation, Monday was his travel day. Arrival to NYC from MN. Probably a dinner out with other executives Monday evening. Tuesday was likely a full rehearsal at the Hilton. Team setting up stage, A/V, speakers going through their slide decks and practicing talking points. Final feedback for everyone, etc. So in my speculation, his schedule for Tuesday and Wednesday could have been very similar. Likely walked from his hotel Tuesday morning over to the Hilton at a similar time. I can for sure see the perp watching this on Tuesday and doing his own prep as well.

Shocked no one stole it! It's an expensive backpack that could have been resold. Or a homeless person in need could use it.
It's very odd to me.
If a homeless person noticed it, they may have presumed that it belonged to another homeless person, and left it alone out of goodwill. Alternatively - Anyone who didn't already see it on the news may have presumed it was a drug drop or similar and left it alone.

Then why leave the phone on scene?
If it's a burner phone, he was probably careful about a) how he obtained it, b) what apps he used, c) what calls he made and d) how quickly and completely details could be wiped (or encrypted beforehand).

In that case, one remaining danger for him comes once the phone has been linked to him using cellular records from the providers and his known locations. Once that's done and they know the phone's ID (IMEI), he can be tracked if he ever turns that phone on again. There's the risk of DNA when he leaves the phone but if this phone they found is really his, it isn't the only item that offers possible DNA. He seems unconcerned about DNA and relatively unconcerned about other long-term findings but definitely doesn't want his location tracked.

They knew he got on that bus somewhere between Atlanta and NY, but it sounds like they've narrowed it down to Atlanta itself. I think there's a good chance he caught the bus back there too.

A day after NYPD officials said the gunman who stalked and killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson likely fled New York City by bus, NBC New York learned detectives have been sent to Atlanta, Georgia to follow possible leads to find the killer.

Two officials familiar with the investigation said NYPD detectives would be working with local Atlanta authorities in their pursuit of Thompson's killer. Atlanta police officials confirmed that its department would be providing assistance to the New York City investigators.

No one elaborated further on what potential leads prompted the detectives to travel down to Georgia.

It’s only half a block and across a street away, though.
Yes but a lot more people around, the whole executive leadership likely leaving Hilton at the same time, many probably staying at same hotel as BT, good chance he won’t be alone, lot more witnesses/traffic that time of day too so harder to escape the way he did

Not sure why the mayor needs to weigh in like this, but he does. Saying but not saying but wants to make sure he says it first, I guess.

“We don’t want to release that now,” the mayor said when asked if police have the killer’s name. “If you do, you are basically giving a tip to the person we are seeking and we do not want to give him an upper hand at all. Let him continue to believe he can hide behind the mask. We revealed his face. We’re going to reveal who he is and we’re going to bring him to justice.”

The mayor also commended the “tri-state law enforcement partnership” for the ongoing investigation.

“And the manner in which they were able to follow his footsteps to recover evidence – some of it is known, some of it is unknown – but the net is tightening and we’re going to bring this person to justice,“ Adams said. ‘The net is tightening’ on UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s suspected killer, NYC Mayor Adams says
i don't want to sound cynical nor disrespectful of adams or nypd, but could't every statement be made at any time of any investigation, mostly because he's speaking about the generic function of LE: don't want to relinquish the upper hand, going to tighten the net, brong him to justice. idk, that could have been said two minutes after the shooting... or after any shooting. imo

Any sense of what bus the suspect would have taken from the George Washington bus terminal? Is it just Greyhound and Trailways that serve the station?

The suspect appears to be mixing up his transportation modes to keep the police off his tracks. I wonder if he rode the bus southbound into New Jersey, and then connected with an NJ Transit, SEPTA or Amtrak train, continuing southbound?
Yes he seemed to be mixing up transit modes. I was thinking he might have taken a flight and could have just cabbed it to EWR instead of George Washington station. But GW is just a distraction from his main destination I think.

Part of me has been entertaining some degree of an accomplice just because of the phone. He could have definitely pulled all this off on his own, but assuming (was it confirmed?) the phone was his, why would he need it? He seems to have done his homework, so was the phone used to do that homework (return bus schedule, mapping, etc)? Otherwise it seems to just be a liability.

But I can see having a phone to 'legitimize' "lurking around".

I know a number of young women who make or fake a call when walking in less than desirable locations....

True, but in terms of probabilities it's more likely that someone is talking on a phone when they appear to be talking on a phone. It is less likely for someone to utilize a phone for the appearance of talking on a phone. Especially a burner phone.

If I were the FBI, I would be spending some quality time in NJ, checking out the coincidences in this story:

1. Fake NJ ID
2. Bus he arrived on that starts in Atlanta also has it's next to the last stop in Newark, NJ
3. Rutger's Law School has the Delay, Deny, Defend book in it's law school curriculum ( the author was on Rutger's staff)
4. Exit timing on bus could also have returned to various points in NJ.
5. He is clearly comfortable and experienced staying in a hostel. He has done this before.

I just have the feeling that the perp is from the Northeast or Greater New York, New Jersey area. If New Jersey, he would likely have made trips into NYC as a student, and probably also stayed in a hostel, although maybe not that one. He was clearly comfortable with the situation in a hostel, and had planned to be as inconspicuous and as isolated as possible. I'm convinced he has stayed in hostels before. He has cash, but he is not spending lavishly. Outside of the weapon, not much more has been expensive, as far as we can say.

Atlanta made sense before the shooting. But with the police on his heels after the shooting, he most likely would not have had planned an escape from Atlanta, it’s too long a bus ride. It’s one of the nearby airports, Canada or some other city nearby.

Suicide by assassin is an interesting theory. It would explain the somewhat lackadaisical manner of the shooter....meaning, I wonder.... if you're killing someone at their own request, do you subconsciously not really grasp the risks of either getting caught/arrested for murder or outright killed yourself if someone--a guard, police officer, or civilian--was armed and in the vicinity?

Would "doing it because he asked me to" lessen your fear of getting caught? I could see how it might (erroneously).

As always, JMO.
I actually thought about that scenario, too. BT was in a lot of trouble with UHC. Dumping all those shares, not telling the public shareholders and denials of claims with AI. Plus, him and his wife are estranged. He has tons of money, easily could pay someone to off him. JMO

A leg is much harder to hit than the torso, and there was just no reason to do that. There was no one else directly in the line of fire.

Many times right handed shooters miss low and left because they are anticipating the recoil of the gun.

So I’m chalking that up to an unintentional miss. What’s also interesting is that he didn’t give the coup de grace, shooting him in the head to make sure he was dead.

A bit sloppy.
I would argue that “a bit sloppy” is an understatement from the perspective of a “pro” or even serious shooter :)

The gun, if it is really a station 6, is a joke for any serious work. Single shot limits follow up time which is huge in a public setting where a bystander might get involved. That particular gun brings no advantages except it had a suppressor. I am betting the ammo isn’t subsonic either. NYC doesn’t allow concealed carry so no worries about armed citizen but someone can tackle you and keep you there. A semi auto or hell even a revolver makes more sense so I’m guessing he already had the gun or easily could borrow/steal it for this. The suppressor would mean a paper trail and wait times (like a year depending on load on the system). The fact he missed so badly at a very close range means he likely hadn’t fired it much. I expect he practiced cycling the weapon, load, maybe disassembly but not a lot of shooting. Likely more experienced from call of duty than real firearm training.

The unspent shells make no sense either. He dropped them on purpose to deceive or he could have stood there and cycled the action several times for no reason but he wasn’t clearing a jam which would have explained it better.

Sorry this sat a while and the thread likely moved on in the time I take to type these days lol.
