FBI offers up to $50K for information as search for UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting suspect continues

Well, that was fast.

This has me a little more convinced that he's out of the country and may be harder than thought to catch.

That’s interesting. A few of the online articles I came across were taking a cynical attitude towards the marketing of the weapon, assuming it was an assassin’s gun that couldn’t be marketed as such. It didn’t occur to me that it could be used on a farm for the purpose stated by the marketing department. The article linked below is an example – it uses scare quotes around in its headline. The VP9’s successor is the Station Six – I don’t know which (if either) was used by the shooter. Both are B & T products.

B&T VP9 Review: "Veterinary Pistol"

This has been stated multiple times, but the "veterinary pistol" is a marketing ploy. I'm a horse trainer, sometimes we have to euthanize horses. I've worked on the racetrack. I have a friend who is a sheep farmer who has to euthanize her own sheep. Veterinarians humanely euthanize animals via injection, even at the racetrack. You don't spend the $ to get the vet out to have them shoot your animal. Slaughterhouses use captive bolt guns so they don't spend money on bullets. People who have to euthanize their own livestock use a regular old gun. There is basically no circumstance in which it would matter if animals could hear the gunshot or not but you can also get close enough to hold the gun to the animal's skull. It's a completely made up marketing angle.
So interesting. I've never heard of this type of gun before, thankfully, haven't needed to put a horse down. I do know how a horse dying can upset the entire barn, as all the horses feel it. I understand what you are saying from the marketing angle, for sure!

There was a woman standing within 4 feet of BT when he was shot. Watch the video
She was standing with her back to the shooter, barely visible and not really a threat. But you got me, I didn’t even see her.

Anyway, the interesting point is the killer shows some risk taking here that is remarkable IMO.

I think it’s just because they know he’s out of state, so that now takes the ball from NYPD as far as an arrest goes.

Once they traced him to the bus station that changed everything. I’m sure they suspected he had fled NY, but now they have the evidence to prove it.

Hence the FBI.

I wasn’t expecting Temple Grandin to make an appearance on this thread :-)
I'm sorry! I'm so obsessed with this case, I've been looking at updates from the back of a horse today. I'm eager to provide what little knowledge I can.

I have to say that my first thought upon reading about the case and the initial masked surveillance images was incel-angry, disgruntled male without a clear motive besides disgruntlement.

Now that we see the intricacies of his plan and an actual photo of him flirting, I'm off that theory. I now have a lot of different ideas as to motive, and I'm refreshing media/WS over and over to see what it will be. Add in the "folk hero" aspect, which I don't personally subscribe to, and you have a true crime page-turner.

What can I say? There are people in the world who want any excuse to buy yet another lethal ($5700) toy.

We've just witnessed one.
I can definitely agree with you there.

They’re useless here. They copy and paste from previous articles, and can’t even repeat an account from another outlet correctly.

They’re good for finding out about a story, but then it’s best to click the links to the actual reporting they’re drawing from.
Agreed. 100%z. The number of grammatical errors is clue enough. Not to be trusted.

He seemed nonplussed by the lady, as well as the car with the lights on, to the left.

Yes - at 0645 in the morning outside a high end hotel - there could have been people employed there to keep it safe. As in armed guards twice the killer’s size.

The person in the car is unlikely to react, so is someone with their back turned. I guess he was lucky no one was paid to watch the entrance.

the type of gun seems to be b&t vp9 - brugger thomett - veterinary pistol 9(mm). i mentioned earlier, but think it's interesting, they had an ad that said it "won't wake the neighbours". i guess that may be useful in a situation like this.
One interview said it would be about as loud as a hair dryer, so not totally silent.

To be honest, I am relieved.

The comments from Mayor Adams on this case have felt so... I don't know... ho hum? The statements he's issued have made me feel like this criminal has has them a bit pantsed.
"We're homing in on the shooter's identity... "
"We're on the right track. We're going to bring this person to justice... This person was fully masked & we used good old fashioned police work to come up with the picture you have." (I mean, really? Good old fashioned police work...)
"In all my years of law enforcement, I have never seen a silencer before"

Maybe I'm just a Stan for the FBI, but I honestly hope the FBI eat this shooter's lunch tomorrow.

Well, there goes my optimism about an identity and a possible arrest tomorrow.
This doesn't change anything. It's standard for the FBI to offer rewards when they become directly involved, and NYPD apparently identifying this guy was a relatively new development.

I do think there's a great chance of an arrest tomorrow.

If and when he's captured, it's likely to be because of the work of NYPD. This was all pieced together by a bunch of investigators poring over thousands of hours of video. They tracked his movements, found that hostel, identified images of him, and found video of him removing his mask.

Adams is a politician who has his own interests, but isn't involved at all in the investigation. I just hope they didn't tell him this guy's name!

Thank you for setting me straight. All credit absolutely due to NYPD for sure for the work so far... And you kind of nailed it. I meant to say that I feel like the NYPD deserve to have the help of the FBI here, and their mayor not making statements to the public that have them sounding like they're strolling around Mayberry.

I thought the FBI was already involved, but I guess they are now taking over. That changes things I guess.
And maybe they do have an identity but have no leads on where he is.
