I'd also like to know, when authorities searched her house, if they searched for extra grey dinner plates.
Maybe they were in the "messy" pantry

Patterson refused help plating beef Wellington, placed her unique plate at table

Wilkinson said the group then moved to the verandah and discussed the garden and some wind damage to some trees.

“We looked at a particular bush, at the end of the verandah. It wasn’t doing so well. Heather and Gail are both keen gardeners. It was a discussion about why this plant was not doing so well, and whether it … might be better, moved to another location,” he says.

Eventually, they moved back into the house. Once inside, Wilkinson says Patterson started mashing potatoes for lunch.

“Erin plated up the food,” he says.

“She was on the kitchen side of the kitchen bench and she was putting the food on the plates.”

The jury heard Heather and Gail offered to help Erin plate the food, but she rejected the offer and did it all herself at the bench.

“There was mash, potatoes, green beans and beef Wellington,” Wilkinson says.

“Each person had an individual serve [of beef Wellington]. It was very much like a pasty, if you imagine a pasty being put on a plate. Pastry encased, and when we cut into it, there was steak and mushrooms.”

Wilkinson says there may have been gravy on the table.

There were four large, grey dinner plates – and one smaller plate in a different colour.

“It was an orangey-tan colour,” he says.

Wilkinson says Gail Patterson picked up two of the grey plates and placed them on the table, and Heather the other two. Erin took the unique plate and placed it at her seat.

‘We should have shared’: beef Wellington portions were large, said Heather Wilkinson

By

Wilkinson uses a touch screen and yellow digital marker to explain the seating arrangement at the table, placing the first letter of each person’s name at their seats.

“We said grace, [and] we began eating.”

Wilkinson says the group remarked over the meal as they ate.

The jury heard that Ian and Heather Wilkinson finished their portions, Gail Patterson ate her vegetables and half of her beef Wellington, and Don Patterson ate his whole meal and half of Gail’s beef Wellington.

“There was talk about husbands helping their wives out by eating extra food. Heather mentioned: ‘We should have shared a beef Wellington’, because she thought the meal was a bit on the large side for her.

“So that’s the reason I remember who ate what, because of that little exchange,” Wilkinson says.

He couldn’t remember how much Erin ate from her place.

“She was definitely eating, and I don’t remember any comments, like: ‘Oh, you didn’t eat much’, or anything like that,” he says.

The jury heard that after the meal, the group was fairly full and did not eat much of the cake Gail had brought or the fruit platter provided by the Wilkinsons.

The jury has been excused for a 15-minute break.

I think they look in underwear drawers first thing. Lots of people, including myself, stash important things in that drawer. I don't think they would consider that 'hiding' something.
My wife's underwear draw is where our passports are kept and probably other important stuff that I couldn't be trusted with looking after.

I wonder why she invited heather and ian more after hearing him say that they barely knew her.

I wonder if she had some grievance against them that they had no idea about. Like Ian gave some marital advice to Simon that she didn't appreciate. Or even that he said something in a sermon that upset her.

The hearing has resume

By Joseph Dunstan

Pastor Ian Wilkinson, the sole surviving guest of Erin Patterson's lunch, is giving evidence.

He's being examined by prosecutor Jane Warren.

Before the break, they'd been moving chronologically through the events leading up to the lunch.

He'd shared that the guests at Erin's lunch had little space for cake and fruit after the substantial beef Wellington meals, which also included mashed potatoes and green beans.

I just can't imagine sitting at a table, you having served up a meal to your guests, knowing it contained a deadly poison & just watch your guests eating, bite by bite, knowing what will happen in the hours a head, that is just so cold & EVIL!

All allegedly of course.......

Erin told four guests she had 'life-threatening' cancer, court hears

Ian is then asked what happened after the meal:

After the lunch, Erin announced that she had cancer. She said that she was very concerned because she believed it was very serious, life-threatening.

She was anxious about telling the kids. She was asking our advice about that.
Erin spoke about a diagnostic test which showed a tumor, Ian says.

an Wilkinson felt 'okay' after dinner — then illness set in

By Tim Callanan

Ian explains that he and the other guests left Erin Patterson's house and attended a meeting as planned around 3pm.

He doesn't recall what he and Heather ate for their evening meal and they went to bed "a little later than normal" after 10pm.

He also prepared for his church sermon which was to be delivered the following day.

Ian says he was "feeling okay" in the evening but heard his wife Heather get up during the night and be physically ill.

Lunch guests pray for Erin

By Judd Boaz

Ian says he led a prayer following the lunch, asking for "God's blessing on Erin" during her treatment.

He also asked for wisdom for when she would have to speak with her children.

After the prayer, conversation quickly changed topics as Erin's child entered the house.

OMG the victims prayed for Erin’s fake claim about her having cancer. I have zero sympathy for her.

Ian Wilkinson says he and wife became ill that evening

Erin and Simon’s son and his friend then returned home which cut short the conversation about Erin’s illness, the court hears.

Ian then led the guests to prayer for Erin.

He recalls leaving Erin’s house at about 2.45pm as he and Heather had guests coming over at 3pm.

Ian and Heather went to bed at about 10.30 or 11pm that evening, jurors are told.

He says before they had fallen asleep Heather “abruptly” got up from bed and vomited in the laundry:

I felt alright when Heather initially got up. But it wasn’t very long after that I also felt the need to go and vomit.
The couple were vomiting and had diarrhoea through the evening, the court hears.

He says he and Heather did not return to bed that night as they needed to stay close to the toilets in the house.

Couple were 'camped' near bathrooms

By Tim Callanan

Ian Wilkinson explains he and his wife Heather were ill numerous times during the night.

"I was vomiting fairly regularly," he says.

He explains he "camped" outside one of the toilets in the house while his wife stayed near another bathroom in the house.

They both experienced vomiting and diarrhoea.

Plate differences again brought up by Heather at hospital

By Judd Boaz

Ian is asked about the plates at lunch, and says Heather had raised the point when wondering why they had fallen ill.

"The conversation that I remember was in the Leongatha Hospital, we might have discussed it a couple of times actually … Heather reminding me that there were different plates," he says.
He says Heather had noticed the different colour plate that Erin had used.

Ian tells the court that after arriving at hospital, the lunch was quickly identified as a possible cause for the poisoning.

"Suspicion was falling on the meat," he says.
Ian says the mushrooms were not initially considered by medical staff as a cause.

Simon Patterson drove couple to hospital

By Tim Callanan

Ian Wilkinson says he spoke to Simon Patterson on the phone and he convinced them to go to hospital.

Simon Patterson ended up driving Ian and Heather to Korumburra Hospital and was told there was no room at the hospital, so he drove them to Leongatha Hospital.

A prayer, a tumour and a table of four fed guests

By

Ian Wilkinson continues telling the jury about the beef Wellington lunch and has come to the part where cook Erin Patterson tells her guests some medical news.

Erin told her guests she had cancer and was very concerned.

“She believed it was very serious, life-threatening,” Wilkinson recalls. She was anxious about telling the kids. She was asking our advice about that,” Ian said.

“That moment I thought: ‘This is the reason we’re being invited to the lunch’.

Ian said Erin spoke about a diagnostic test that showed a spot on the scan, which was a tumour.

“The conversation moved fairly quickly to the point of anxiety, which Erin had expressed, which was: ‘What do I do with the kids in this situation?’” Ian said.

The jury heard Don Patterson replied first and advised Erin that it would be best to be honest with the children. The other guests agreed.

“It felt like it was fairly short, maybe 10 minutes. But in a moment of tension like that, maybe more time passes than you think. But I would say it was a relatively short conversation,” Ian said.

The conversation ended when the guests saw Erin and Simon’s son and his friend arriving at the property through a window, the jury heard.

“I suggested that we pray, and I prayed a prayer, asking God’s blessing on Erin that, shall we get the treatment that she needed, that the kids would be okay, but she’d have wisdom in how she told the kids. Then the prayer concluded as the boys arrived in the room,” Ian said.

The group then moved to the end of the kitchen bench and continued conversing about Erin and Simon’s son’s flying lessons.

“It was during that conversation that we realised time had passed and it was time to get on the road and get home, because I had that three o’clock meeting,” Ian said.

Ian and Heather spend night at Leongatha Hospital

By Judd Boaz

Ian says he continued experiencing diarrhoea during the day on the ward.

Although he wanted to go home, the doctors were not satisfied with Ian and Heather's health, so the couple stayed the evening and slept.

"We did get some sleep, we were absolutely exhausted by this time," he says.

Upon waking, they were rushed in their beds to the urgent care ward by nurses.

Ian says a doctor then informed them of correspondence with Dandenong Hospital, and the discovery of a potential mushroom poisoning.

They were advised of "time-critical treatment" available, and the need to transfer them to Dandenong Hospital.

Ian says he was taken in the first ambulance, and Heather taken in the second.

He says he was aware that Erin Patterson was also at Leongatha Hospital at the time.

Perhaps Erin prepared her entire plate the day before. And it was in the pantry, to ensure there was never any cross contamination. But it'd be just the sort of thing that would look really bad. One plated BW on a different colored plate all alone in the pantry.

Inconsequential but it just occurred to -- the powdered mushrooms weren't necessarily mixed with the BW mushrooms. Could have been in the potatoes, the pastry. Marinated into the beef.

It seems Erin called for this odd luncheon under very false pretenses. And made careful sure to keep her plate completely separate (but identifiable to her). That isðgoing to be really hard to explain away.
