And who knows? maybe LE did locate a signal, and that's what lead them to the bodies. Maybe K&B turned it on to record their message and left it on?One little bit of access would allow them to be tracked though. As soon as that phone was turned on(if it had been turned off) they would be able to track them. So if they had a cell phone with them the whole time it was never turned on, or at least not once they were on the run, though as I said before if they had filmed it prior to say the 21st then it wouldn't matter.
Can police and hackers really track you with your phone? | Digital Trends
If there wasn't any cell phone service out there then how was the cab driver they apparently may have called, called from there?
ETA: Your smartphone can be tracked even if GPS, location services are turned off

Substantiated sightings or unsubstantiated?Makes more sense, though that is one more possible witness that we are choosing not to believe.
So which ones do we believe, and which ones do we not believe?
How does one decide?
That article says nothing about airplane mode.
Your phone cannot be tracked when in airplane mode. It turns off the cell radio, wifi, and bluetooth. Your phone goes radio silent in order not to disturb the sensitive electronics in an airplane.
Thought: maybe Bryer asked to be buried in his new suit after all?
I mean, I'm not surprised. But like...what a thing for their families to have to see. I wonder if we will ever know what they said?
The main thing I'm surprised about is that they had battery left on their phones.
I'm with you: several? When no one was talking, except AS. Seems sketchy to me.The family members aren’t commenting either. I’m surprised CTV was able to contact “several” of them.

Canadian cops admit to using Stingray devices to track cellphones en masse
ETA: The only thing that would be in the way of tracking a cell phone for them would be them needing a warrant and I don't expect it would have been hard to get in this instance.
Substantiated sightings or unsubstantiated?
Don't believe the unsubstantiated ones (like this one).
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, very interesting.None of those methods (Stingray and similar) could be used on a device that is not transmitting. Overriding airplane mode would require a prior hack.
As the article you linked mentions, Stingray et. al. use IMSI-catching, basically intercepting (sometimes via impersonating a cell tower) communications. Thus, the device has to be transmitting something. If it isn't transmitting, Stingray has about as much chance of tracking it as it does of tracking a brick. Same with turning the phone all the way off; it does not transmit when fully off (though like any other software-controlled command, it can be hacked, and may only appear off, but still be transmitting.).
If, however, the suspects were operating their phones without airplane mode (or with a hack-compromised airplane mode) and within a cellular coverage area, there are a plethora of ways to track them (smartphones are essentially spying devices by their nature), and they can even be tracked in areas without cell coverage (the phone is still trying to ping for a tower) though the latter would require some airborne DF (direction-finding) gear to triangulate the location.
ETA: The link you posted above has a slightly misleading title;
Google is tracking you even with Airplane Mode turned ON
What the phone is actually doing is spying on your movements and logging them, then transmitting them after airplane mode is off. Not while it's on.
NoWhat if you take the SIM card out of your phone. Could you have your phone on and record without being tracked?
Sounds like there was a confession on the video and that's why it's going to be so fast. JMO.
