Sorry - I was speaking of the Gillam
area search.
That said it, seems like there would be generally regular patrols of highway 97. Would not one of them become involved in the case of stranded motorists?

Which stranded motorists? I'm confused. The only stranded motorists in this story, that I know of, are Chynna and Lucas.

Final video could reveal motive for Canada highway murders

...
The two teenagers suspected of shooting dead Australian tourist Lucas Fowler and his US girlfriend Chynna Deese on a Canadian highway rampage left a "last will and testament" video message.

Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 19, recorded the video message on their mobile phones before taking their own lives in remote bushland in northern Manitoba, the Toronto Star reports.
About 30 seconds of the video was shared with family members of the former fugitives.
...
McLeod and Schmegelsky said goodbye to their families in the video and described their wishes for their remains, according to a family member interviewed by the Star.

Thanks for posting this, I haven't been able to read today and jumped to the last page and was wondering what the 'video' talk was all about!

If for some reason the RCMP did not include Alan Schmegelsky in the viewing I think that would be akin to torture for him.
No kidding!

If I was their family, I would be expecting to see the entire video, not just 30 seconds of it, since it was a last will and testament.

My impression--which could be wrong--is what they saw was the last will and testament part. I suspect the rest is currently not available to them because it may contain something resembling a confession and, thus, is currently deemed evidence. Once the investigation wraps up, they may well get to see the rest of it if they wish to.

Most likely the rest of it is a confession and possibly suicide footage, which is why the police haven't released it. I don't think they will release the video itself to the public, but maybe a transcript in the report. But...I have a weird feeling it will leak at some point one way or another. JMO.

They are the stranded motorists we have been discussing for many threads here!

I am disappointed that the RCMP have had this phone in their possession for so many days and have only just made this public, and it appears to have only told families about this now as well. Why are they only allowing the families to see 30 secs of it? Do they say something different in the video to the scenario the police thought happened? (You may have to go "incognito" to be able to see this without paying)

That’s evidence at this point, and RCMP probably doesn’t want that leaking out before they are done putting the pieces together.

It was nice of them to show the family even that much.

I’m sure they’ll see the whole thing in due course.

To be fair, we don't know when the family was told or shown. It is only being reported now. This may have happened days ago. And as others have stated, it is evidence in a crime--we the public are not really entitled to know this, and even the family's right/need to know is governed by the needs of the investigation.

Since it was a last will and testament, I am assuming that the families were possibly shown the footage around the same time they got the bodies back or shortly before. MOO

Buy one on ebay.

Get one from a friend (tons of now unused phones lying around people's houses, even if not at your own house).

Swap meets and garage sales.

Amazon (pick up at locker in the US)

Even when it's off, it will record some location data - but if no one knows it's your phone, no biggie.

But what the cool kids do (apparently) is install a VPN app on their phones and anti-tracking software (and a few other things, but I'm always afraid people will get ideas).

There are definitely numerous ways to get a phone. I have 6 sitting in my home right now that I could easily sell if I actually wanted to.

VPN...oh I have things to say, but you are right! I won't elaborate.

Being stranded isn't a police matter. Where CAA/AAA is available, that's who stranded motorists call. The highway department regularly patrols hwy 97, hence the three sightings by them in one day and stopping once to offer assistance.

The "stranded" question I have is the quote from the woman who drove by the scene at 4PM on July 14, where she notified RCMP, and the time that the road worker arrived at the scene (6:45AM), and the official time of 7:19AM on July 15 that the RCMP state they were notified.

Some threads back, someone (Zella?) posted the Steam account link. The "Kill 'em" character was the last posting for them both on the day they started off. Not being into video games myself, I took this as a literal sign of a pact between them over their intentions to kill and create mayhem. I can understand more video game savvy people could see this as a symbolic metaphor than mean other things. I do think they had a general intention to kill people, but not anyone specifically. AS might have had it right that they wanted to go out in a fire fight. The RCMP suspected as much and held back the search on the ground so as not to expose their people to this danger. I'm going to hazard a guess that they died between July 25 (when there was a cold snap and a rain storm) and July 28 (day of the York Landing sighting when many of searchers left the Gillam area).

Looks like I don't understand the beginnings of the situation when and where Chynna and Lucas were stranded because of car trouble. And what happened when they were.

Yes, I think that exchange between them was back in June. (Edited to add: June 4. Is visible if you go back far enough on the profile comments. Steam Community :: Bryer)

I'm vacillating between they went on a roadtrip intending to kill or they impulsively decided to rob the van for a thrill, things escalated, they murdered LF and CD in the heat of the moment, and then decided adding one more victim was no big deal once they feared they were going to be connected to the first crime. Just MOO.

That post was June 4th. Not the day they left. It is also a VERY common thing on Steam, though they are usually much more inappropriate pictures depicted.

I can see those as possible scenarios. The first one is wanting a thrill kill. They found vulnerable, isolated people on the road that posed absolutely no threat to them and murdered them. Afterwards they continued down and around the same road for a good distance, but hung around to see the reaction to what they had done before they killed Len Dyke, a similar sort of victim in that he was also vulnerable and was no threat to them. Getting a better vehicle, taking off to the east, walking around stores with cameras, giving their full names to strangers suggests that they wanted to be hunted down. The police wanted to protect the townspeople, but didn't want to sacrifice their people to help them live out their fantasy. They let the harsh conditions take their toll and patiently waited them out. Why weren't there additional victims? Killing the couple and the professor were instrumental for creating the chase. There wasn't a reason for them to kill others to get to the end they were seeking. As I write this I think I've talked myself into seeing the thrill kill to police chase as a way of explaining their known actions. They were looking for a cool way to commit suicide. I feel broken hearted for all the families caught up in their sickness.

I was starting to tell the story of how my brother committed suicide over 16 years ago. The reason was over love lost (very tragic). My Dad was never the same after that. I've never seen him cry so much. I can't even imagine how the parents can cope with a child doing something so heinous and then ending their life. It's a double whammy of heartache for the parents.

Actually I doubt they recorded their suicides. The phone would have had to be in a waterproof enclosure to be protected from the elements. They didn't know how long it would be before their bodies would be found. So I doubt they just left it running.
