B.C. manhunt suspects recorded final message on phone found with bodies, family says | The Star
omg!

A family member told Star Vancouver that about 30 seconds of the video found on the cellphone have been shared with the families of McLeod and Schmegelsky.
I wonder if this is part of that digital evidence the RCMP referenced back when they announced the finding of the bodies.

I'm also intrigued, again, by that reference to the tip that led to the two being considered suspects in the murders of LF and CD. I wonder what sort of tip that was? Dashcam footage? A witness? Or something else...

That’s a really good point (and a really good plan). Also, us armchair sleuths are vacillating all over the place too.

Someone in a thread or two above said that we tend to see this case according to our own world view. Which is a very good point I think, very wise.

There seem to be three general theories on here:

  1. They didn’t do it, they’re being framed, there’s a third man involved. This one just seems too far-fetched, imo.
  2. This was a robbery gone bad, their resultant actions being terror at the realization of what they did. They’re not really bad kids deep down, they’re just products of a bad environment. I appreciate the idealism behind this one, and I get it - but I don’t necessarily buy it.
  3. They’re thrill killers and this was a preplanned event. I don’t totally buy this one either, though I guess I’m sort of leaning in this general direction. I suspect that at least one of them really was a bad kid, all the way down, regardless of his past environment. But who the heck knows.
  4. Edited to add: see theory #4 below

I do think that one of the reasons this case is so compelling is that we don’t have a known reason for their actions, there are no answers - it’s an unsolved (and probably unsolvable) mystery - which is unsettling.

I think you need:

1.(B) They did it, and a third party was involved. Someone knew they had this plan and either didn't rat them out, or aided and abetted in some way.

Because the Star wants to protect their source and/or they spoke on condition of not being named.

My question, why would the person with this information require anonymity?

Unseasonable snow forces campers out of northern B.C. provincial park - KamloopsMatters.com
Just an interesting nugget of info - carry on!
Highway 97 near Fort Nelson, Steamboat Hill (left) and Sikanni Chief, are covered in snow during unusual weather patterns in the middle of August 2019
A notice posted on the Facebook page of Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park said the park was closed on Sunday and would remain so until further notice because the heavy, wet snow brought down numerous trees and more could come down.

I have a feeling there wasn't a whole lot they said in the 30 seconds of them speaking in the video.

True enough...but we don't actually know how long the video is beyond the part shared with their families, if there is a part beyond what was shared.

I've been wondering for a little while now (disturbing as this thought may be) if these two may have video documented their crimes or aftermath of their crimes, or even just some of their flight from the law. They did not seem all that active on traditional social media, but just an idea I have had...

During one of the PCs, iirc the RCMP credited the tip from Meadow Lake, Sask and that’s when investigation by police determined their status was suspects in three murders, as opposed to missing persons.

Police also mentioned digital evidence at that time.

“This investigation is very complex and ever-evolving. Investigators continue to follow up on tips, and review the physical and digital evidence collected," Shoihet said.

RCMP did not release specifics about where the teens were last seen in northern Saskatchewan, but released photos captured from CCTV video from a store where they were last seen....”

My question, why would the person with this information require anonymity?

Just a guess here, but people are sick of hearing from AS. Posts about him in the news comment sections are not favourable whenever he goes to the media.

Guessing/speculation:

-they haven’t been permitted to speak on behalf of the family

- they are close enough to the family to be informed, but/and see that this information is useful in shedding light on this very public tragedy.

-they do not wish to have their name linked/further linked to McLeod and Schmegelsky

-the ‘source’ cannot legally be named as they are still under an ‘exclusive’ contract with a media agency (speculation!)

Considering AS claims to have learned about his son’s disappearance from the Vancouver Sun newspaper, I don’t think Bs family in Port Alberni would suddenly begin to share any confidential information with him whatsoever, given his public allegations toward them involving Bs neglectful upbringing.

They don’t want to be hounded by desperate media??

Sorry was trying to reply to the comment you were replying to.

Unless the Mounties let him view the snippet from the video too.

I fully expect they would let AS see the video. I'm wondering if confidentiality agreements are a thing for situations such as this? If not, I suspect we'll be hearing from AS at some point on this issue.

Based on their age category, I have always felt KM & BS would do this. JMO

I mean, I'm not surprised. But like...what a thing for their families to have to see. I wonder if we will ever know what they said?

The main thing I'm surprised about is that they had battery left on their phones.

The media is unable to vet the accuracy of second hand information because nobody is confirming it. So it might be true and it might not be, depending on the reliability of the Star’s source. I hope it didn’t come from FB.

If for some reason the RCMP did not include Alan Schmegelsky in the viewing I think that would be akin to torture for him.
